Description
TECHNICAL FIELD

The present invention relates to the field of promotional display and advertising devices, and more particularly, to promotional or advertising pieces having a pop-up feature that effectively captures the attention of consumers.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

In order to generate initial consumer interest in a product or service, businesses typically employ a variety of promotional and advertising devices. These devices may be in the form of sheets or booklets containing various written and graphical content, as well as other features. In addition, promotional and advertising devices in sheet or booklet form are well suited for use as a mailer. By sending the promotional devices to consumers, businesses hope to keep or gain the business of the targeted consumers.

However, it is well known that most consumers do not like receiving “junk mail.” Typically junk mail consists of advertising circulars that announce sales and sometimes contain coupons. Many consumers briefly flip through the pages of junk mail before eventually throwing the junk mail in the garbage. Thus, many promotional and advertising pieces are not very effective for generating consumer interest.

Therefore, what is needed in the art is a promotional piece that is effective for generating consumer interest in a product or service. This is particularly true for mailers that many consumers might view as junk mail, which is often thrown away after a brief glance. The art has been missing a promotional piece with a pop-up feature that serves to effectively capture the attention of consumers upon receipt of the promotional piece. Moreover, there is a need in the art for a promotional piece that may be manufactured in large volumes by an in-line process to provide a cost effective promotional piece with a pop-up feature.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

In its most general configuration, the present invention advances the state of the art with a variety of new capabilities and overcomes many of the shortcomings of prior devices in new and novel ways. In its most general sense, the present invention overcomes the shortcomings and limitations of the prior art in any of a number of generally effective configurations. The instant invention demonstrates such capabilities and overcomes many of the shortcomings of prior methods in new and novel ways.

A promotional piece with a pop-up feature generally comprises a backing substrate and a presentation substrate selectively joined together to create a pop-up feature when the promotional piece is moved from a closed to an open position. The backing substrate and the presentation substrate may or may not be composed of the same material.

The backing substrate has a backing fold line and a backing substrate perimeter. The backing fold line divides the backing substrate perimeter into at least a first backing substrate perimeter and a second backing substrate perimeter. The backing substrate also includes a first backing substrate region and a second backing substrate region. The backing fold line provides an axis about which the backing substrate may be moved from a closed position to an open position.

The presentation substrate has a first fold line, a second fold line, a third fold line, and a presentation substrate perimeter. The presentation substrate further includes a first presentation section, a second presentation section, a third presentation section, and a fourth presentation section. Each presentation section has a corresponding presentation section length. The second presentation section includes an aperture having an aperture length. The aperture is a hole or window that is formed through the presentation substrate.

In one embodiment of the promotional piece with a pop-up feature the third presentation section and the fourth presentation section are folded about the second fold line. After the third presentation section and the fourth presentation section have been folded about the second fold line, the presentation substrate may be joined to the backing substrate. Specifically, the first presentation section may be joined to the first backing substrate region, and a portion of the fourth presentation section may be joined directly to the second backing substrate region through the aperture.

With this arrangement, when the backing substrate and the presentation substrate are in the closed position, the third presentation section is substantially adjacent to the second presentation section. When the backing substrate and the presentation substrate are moved from the closed position to the open position, at least a portion of the third presentation section is caused to project away, or pop-up, from the second presentation section.

This feature is a result of the movement of the second presentation section. The first presentation section is secured to the first backing substrate region and therefore the first presentation section remains in a fixed position relative to the first backing substrate region when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature is moved from the closed position to the open position. In addition, the first fold line and the backing fold line are spaced apart such that when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature is moved to the open position a portion of the presentation substrate moves towards the direction of the first fold line so that the promotional piece with a pop-up feature can reach the open position.

A portion of the fourth presentation section is secured to the backing substrate and therefore remains in a fixed position when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature is moved to the open position. Because the second presentation section is not secured to the backing substrate, the second presentation section is allowed to move towards the direction of the first fold line. The aperture facilitates this movement by allowing the second presentation section to move, or slide, between the fourth presentation section and the second backing substrate region. Thus, when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature is moved to the open position the first presentation section and the fourth presentation section remain in a fixed position, but the second presentation section moves towards the direction of the first fold line. When the second presentation section moves, the movement causes at least a portion of the third presentation section to project away, or pop-up, from the second presentation section.

The present invention is well suited for receiving printed indicia, such as text and graphics. Prior to being joined together, the front and back sides of the backing substrate and the front and back sides of the presentation substrate may be printed with various indicia. Thus, in an embodiment of the instant invention, when the third presentation section is torn out, the third presentation section may have printed indicia on its front side and back side.

A plurality of promotional pieces with a pop-up feature may be produced by a high speed in-line manufacturing process. The first step in the process consists of providing a continuous presentation substrate web and a continuous backing substrate web in a longitudinal direction. Next, a series of apertures are cut in the continuous presentation substrate web. After the series of apertures are cut, a web fold line of reduced strength is formed in the continuous presentation substrate web. The continuous presentation substrate web is then subjected to a folding process where the continuous presentation substrate web is folded along two fold lines. Following this step, the continuous backing substrate web is folded along a fold line.

Next, the continuous presentation substrate web and the continuous backing substrate web are joined together to form a continuous promotion piece substrate web. Lastly, the continuous promotional piece substrate web is cut into a succession of separate promotional pieces with a pop-up feature.

The instant invention enables a significant advance in the state of the art. The instant invention is, in addition, widely applicable to a large number of applications. Variations, modifications, alternatives, and alterations of the various embodiments may be used alone or in combination with one another, as will become more readily apparent to those with skill in the art with reference to the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments and the accompanying figures and drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

A promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) enables a significant advance in the state of the art. The preferred embodiments of the apparatus accomplish this by new and novel arrangements of elements that are configured in unique and novel ways and which demonstrate previously unavailable but preferred and desirable capabilities. The detailed description set forth below in connection with the drawings is intended merely as a description of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention, and is not intended to represent the only form in which the present invention may be constructed or utilized. The description sets forth the designs, functions, means, and methods of implementing the invention in connection with the illustrated embodiments. It is to be understood, however, that the same or equivalent functions and features may be accomplished by different embodiments that are also intended to be encompassed within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Referring generally to FIGS. 1 through 15, the present invention is a promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) that captures the attention of a consumer. As seen in FIG. 1, the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) generally comprises a backing substrate (100) and a presentation substrate (200). By way of example, and not limitation, the backing substrate (100) and the presentation substrate (200) may be paper, card stock, foil, mylar, and virtually any material having the flexibility to be folded and moved as described herein. Additionally, the backing substrate (100) and the presentation substrate (200) may or may not be composed of the same material.

With reference now to FIG. 2, the backing substrate (100) has a backing fold line (110) and a backing substrate perimeter (120). The backing fold line (110) divides the backing substrate perimeter (120) into at least a first backing substrate perimeter (122) and a second backing substrate perimeter (124). The backing substrate (100) also includes a first backing substrate region (130) defined by the backing fold line (110) and the first backing substrate perimeter (122), and a second backing substrate region (140) defined by the backing fold line (110) and the second backing substrate perimeter (124). Generally, the backing fold line (110) provides an axis about which the backing substrate (100) may be moved from a closed position to an open position.

Although the backing substrate (100) shown throughout the figures is represented by a rectangular shape, one having skill in the art would recognize that other geometric shapes may be utilized. By way of example, and not limitation, the backing substrate (100) may be shaped as a triangle, circle, oval, pentagon, hexagon, and various other geometric configurations. Likewise, even though the backing fold line (110) is depicted throughout the figures as being in the middle of the backing substrate (100), one having skill in the art will appreciate that the backing fold line (110) may be left or right of the middle of the backing substrate (100).

Referring now to FIG. 3, the presentation substrate (200) has a first fold line (202), a second fold line (204), a third fold line (206), and a presentation substrate perimeter (210). The presentation substrate (200) further includes a first presentation section (220), a second presentation section (230), a third presentation section (240), and a fourth presentation section (250).

Still referring to FIG. 3, the first presentation section (220) is the portion of the presentation substrate (200) bounded by the first fold line (202) and a portion of the presentation substrate perimeter (210). The first presentation section (220) has a first presentation section length (222).

The second presentation section (230), best seen in FIG. 3, is the portion of the presentation substrate (200) bounded by the first fold line (202), the second fold line (204), and at least two portions of the presentation substrate perimeter (210). The second presentation section (230) has a second presentation section length (232) and an aperture (234), having an aperture length (235). The aperture (234) is a hole or window that is formed through the presentation substrate (200). The aperture (234) may be formed by die cutting the presentation substrate (200). Furthermore, although the aperture (234) is depicted throughout the drawings as having a rectangular shape, one with skill in the art would recognize that other shapes may be used. By way of example, and not limitation, the aperture (234) may be shaped as a triangle, circle, oval, pentagon, hexagon, and various other geometric configurations.

With continued reference to FIG. 3, the third presentation section (240), is the portion of the presentation substrate (200) bounded by the second fold line (204), the third fold line (206), and at least two portions of the presentation substrate perimeter (210). The third presentation section (240) also has a third presentation section length (242).

The fourth presentation section (250), best seen in FIG. 3, is the portion of the presentation substrate (200) bounded by the third fold line (206) and a portion of the presentation substrate perimeter (210). The fourth presentation section (250) is further characterized by a fourth presentation section length (252).

As with the backing substrate (100), the presentation substrate (200) is shown throughout the drawings as having primarily a rectangular shape. However, the presentation substrate (200) may be shaped as, by way of example, and not limitation, a triangle, circle, oval, pentagon, hexagon, and various other geometric configurations.

An embodiment of the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is seen in FIGS. 4-9. Referring specifically to FIG. 7, the third presentation section (240) and the fourth presentation section (250) are folded about the second fold line (204), as depicted by the rotation arrows. Referring now to FIG. 8, after the third presentation section (240) and the fourth presentation section (250) have been folded about the second fold line (204), the presentation substrate (200) may be joined to the backing substrate (100), as seen in FIG. 9. More specifically, the first presentation section (220) may be joined to the first backing substrate region (130), as seen in FIG. 5, and a portion of the fourth presentation section (250) may be joined directly to the second backing substrate region (140) through the aperture (234), as best seen in FIG. 6.

The first presentation section (220) and fourth presentation section (250) may be joined to the backing substrate (100) by any number of suitable means, for example, adhesive compositions, adhesive tapes, staples or like mechanical means, and heat pressing, just to name a few. The joining of the presentation substrate (200) and the backing substrate (100) allows both substrates (100, 200) to be simultaneously moved from a closed position to an open position. As will be appreciated from FIGS. 10-12, when moved from the closed position to the open position, the backing substrate (100) moves about the backing fold line (110), and the presentation substrate (200) moves about the first fold line (202).

With this arrangement, when the backing substrate (100) and the presentation substrate (200) are in the closed position, the third presentation section (240) is substantially adjacent to the second presentation section (230), as best seen in FIG. 10. Furthermore, as seen in FIGS. 10-12, when the backing substrate (100) and the presentation substrate (200) are moved from the closed position to the open position, at least a portion of the third presentation section (240) is caused to project away, or pop-up, from the second presentation section (230).

This feature is a result of the movement of the second presentation section (230), as indicated by the directional arrow in FIG. 11. The first presentation section (220) is secured to the first backing substrate region (130) and therefore the first presentation section (220) remains in a fixed position relative to the first backing substrate region (130) when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is moved from the closed position to the open position. In addition, the first fold line (202) and the backing fold line (110) are spaced apart such that when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is moved to the open position a portion of the presentation substrate (200) moves towards the direction of the first fold line (202) so that the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) can reach the open position, as seen in FIG. 11.

A portion of the fourth presentation section (250), like the first presentation section (220), is secured to the backing substrate (100) and therefore remains in a fixed position when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is moved to the open position, as seen in FIGS. 10-12. Because the second presentation section (230) is not secured to the backing substrate (100) the second presentation section (230) is allowed to move towards the direction of the first fold line (202). The aperture (234) facilitates this movement by allowing the second presentation section (230) to move, or slide, between the fourth presentation section (250) and the second backing substrate region (140). Thus, when the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is moved to the open position the first presentation section (220) and the fourth presentation section (250) remain in a fixed position, but the second presentation section (230) moves towards the direction of the first fold line (202). When the second presentation section (230) moves, the movement causes at least a portion of the third presentation section (240) to project away, or pop-up, from the second presentation section (230).

In one embodiment of the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50), the presentation substrate (200) may be designed such that the presentation substrate (200) fits entirely within the backing substrate perimeter (120), as seen in FIG. 4. Utilizing this design gives the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) a clean booklet type appearance without any protruding edges.

Referring now to FIG. 13, another embodiment of the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is shown. In this embodiment, the second fold line (204) and the third fold line (206) are separation lines. As one skilled in the art will observe and appreciate, the separation lines (204, 206) may be formed in a number of methods including, but not limited to, one or more die cuts, perforations, indentations, score lines, and weakened fracture lines. The separation lines (204, 206) permit a consumer to easily remove the third presentation section (240) from the promotional piece (50) when the third presentation section (240) pops-up from the second presentation section (230). The separation lines (204, 206) are particularly advantageous when the third presentation section (240) is presented as a money saving coupon, gift certificate, event ticket, or like promotional item.

In one embodiment of the present invention, as seen in FIG. 14, the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) is designed such that the fourth presentation section (250) conceals the aperture (234) when the backing substrate (100) and the presentation substrate (200) are in the open position. In this embodiment, the fourth presentation section length (252) is greater than the aperture length (235), and the fourth presentation section (250) completely covers the aperture (234) when the promotional piece (50) is in the open position, thereby providing a cleaner and more uniform appearance. Of course, the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) may be designed whereby a portion, or portions, of the aperture (234) are visible when the promotional piece (50) is in the open position, as seen in FIG. 4 and FIG. 9.

In another embodiment, seen in FIG. 4, the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) may be configured such that the first presentation section length (222) is substantially equal to the second presentation section length (232), the third presentation section length (242) is substantially equal to the fourth presentation section length (252), and the third presentation section length (242) and the fourth presentation section length (252) are shorter than the first presentation section length (222) and the second presentation section length (232). This embodiment can help draw more attention to the promotional piece's (50) pop-up feature, namely, the third presentation section (240). For example, the third presentation section (240) may have printed indicia, graphical content, or a color scheme that visually contrasts with the second presentation section (230). In addition to the third presentation section's (240) noticeable projection away from the second presentation section (230), the contrast between the second presentation section (230) and the third presentation section (240) helps to focus the consumer's attention on the third presentation section (240), which will typically contain a promotional item, such as a coupon, gift certificate, event ticket, or the like.

In yet another embodiment, the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) may be configured such that the first presentation section length (222), the second presentation section length (232), the third presentation section length (242), and the fourth presentation section length (252) are substantially equal, as seen in FIG. 15. This embodiment helps capture a consumer's attention by presenting a larger third presentation section (240) that pops-up from the second presentation section (230). For example, because the third presentation section length (242) is substantially equivalent to the second presentation section length (232), a substantial portion of the second presentation section (230) will not be visible when the promotional piece (50) is in the open position. Thus, the consumer's attention will be focused primarily on the third presentation section (240), which may contain the promotional item designed to generate interest in the product or service being promoted.

The promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50) may be used in various applications. By way of example and not limitation, the promotional piece (50) may be used as a portion of product packaging, an advertising mailer, a greeting card, an announcement card, and other like applications. The present invention is well suited for receiving printed indicia, such as text and graphics. Prior to being joined together, the front and back sides of the backing substrate (100) and the front and back sides of the presentation substrate (200) may be printed with various indicia. Thus, in an embodiment of the promotional piece with a pop-up feature (50), such as that shown in FIG. 13, when the third presentation section (240) is removed from the promotional piece (50), the third presentation section (240) may have printed indicia on its front side and back side.

A plurality of promotional pieces with a pop-up feature (50) may be produced by a high speed in-line manufacturing process, as seen in FIG. 16. The first step in the process consists of providing a continuous presentation substrate web (300) and a continuous backing substrate web (400) in a longitudinal direction. The continuous presentation substrate web (300) has a proximal presentation edge (301) and a distal presentation edge (302). The continuous backing substrate web (400) includes a proximal backing edge (401) and a distal backing edge (402). The continuous presentation substrate web (300) and the continuous backing substrate web (400) may be supplied directly from a web printing process to this in-line manufacturing method.

Next, a series of apertures (334) are cut out of the continuous presentation substrate web (300). After the series of apertures (334) are cut, a web fold line of reduced strength (303) is formed in the continuous presentation substrate web (300). The web fold line of reduced strength (303) may be formed in a number of methods including, but not limited to, one or more die cuts, perforations, indentations, score lines, and weakened fracture lines.

Following the formation of the web fold line of reduced strength (303), the continuous presentation substrate web (300) is subjected to a folding process. The continuous presentation substrate web (300) is folded longitudinally along a first web fold line (304) and a second web fold line (306) The web fold lines (304, 306), along with the web fold line of reduced strength (303), divide the continuous presentation substrate web (300) into a first presentation web section (320), a second presentation web section (330), a third presentation web section (340), and a fourth presentation web section (350).

The first presentation web section (320) is the portion of the continuous presentation substrate web (300) bounded by the first web fold line (304) and the proximal presentation edge (301). The second presentation web section (330) is the portion of the continuous presentation substrate web (300) bounded by the first web fold line (304) and the second web fold line (306). The first and second web fold lines (304, 306) are positioned such that the series of apertures (334) are confined to the second presentation web section (330). The third presentation web section (340) is the portion of the continuous presentation substrate web (300) bounded by the second web fold line (306) and the web fold line of reduced strength (303). The fourth presentation web section (350) is the portion of the continuous presentation substrate web (300) bounded by the web fold line of reduced strength (303) and the distal presentation edge (302).

The continuous backing substrate web (400) is folded longitudinally along a backing web fold line (410). The backing web fold line (410) divides the continuous backing substrate (400) into a first backing substrate web region (430) and a second backing substrate web region (440). The first backing substrate web region (430) is the portion of the continuous backing substrate web (400) bounded by the backing web fold line (410) and the proximal backing edge (401). The second backing substrate web region (440) is the portion of the continuous backing substrate web (400) bounded by the backing web fold line (410) and the distal backing edge (402).

Next, the continuous presentation substrate web (300) and the continuous backing substrate web (400) are joined together to form a continuous promotion piece substrate web (500). More specifically, the first presentation web section (320) is joined to a portion of the first backing substrate web region (430), and at least a portion of the fourth presentation web section (350) is joined to the second backing substrate web region (440) through the presentation web aperture (334). The joining of the continuous presentation substrate web (300) to the continuous backing substrate web (400) may be accomplished by applying a suitable adhesive (60) to a portion of the first presentation web section (320) or a portion of the first backing substrate web region (430), and applying a suitable adhesive (60) to a portion of the fourth presentation web section (350) or a portion of the second backing substrate web region (440).

Finally, after the continuous presentation substrate web (300) and the continuous backing substrate web (400) are joined together to form the continuous promotion piece substrate web (500), the continuous promotional piece substrate web (500) is cut into a succession of separate promotional pieces with a pop-up feature (50).

Numerous alterations, modifications, and variations of the embodiments disclosed herein will be apparent to those skilled in the art and they are all anticipated and contemplated to be within the spirit and scope of the instant invention. For example, although specific embodiments have been described in detail, those with skill in the art will understand that the preceding embodiments and variations can be modified to incorporate various types of substitute and or additional or alternative materials, relative arrangement of elements, and dimensional configurations.
