Expandable and contractible interchangeable handbag lining system

Given the name “Quick Change Purse”; it relates to carrying bags having a removable interior lining which can expand and contract in length and/or in depth depending on the size and/or shape of the bag it is fitted into so one can change styles, sizes and/or colors of their bag in an instant. Said lining may be lengthened to fit into a longer bag or shortened to fit into a smaller bag. Likewise another way to expand or contract said lining, two or more linings may be attached together by a fastening device to increase it's depth for fit into bigger bags or taken apart to decrease its size for a proper fit into smaller bags. The lining system may also change the color of some of the adaptable transparent handbags included in the system, may be reversible and is removable for the purpose of use as another handbag.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

This invention relates to carrying bags and more particularly to a handbag lining system whereas any one bag in this system has a removable lining that can be expanded and/or contracted to fit into another bag of the same or different style and/or size made for the system. In addition, the lining system may be reversible whereas one may turn it inside out to achieve a different color and/or pattern of which said lining may be used separately as a handbag itself. Another choice that embodies this system is the option to secure any one of the linings available in this handbag system into one of the transparent plastic handbags made for the system whereas causing the lining color and/or design to show through the plastic of the handbag giving one the option of changing the color and/or design of that particular handbag.

2. Description of the Related Art

It has always been more of a time problem than a monetary problem when it comes to women wanting to coordinate their handbag with the outfit they are wearing. Women will spend money on accessories such as shoes and handbags. It's easy and quick to slip on a pair of color and style coordinated shoes. However, one can not make more time to change to the handbag you would really like to carry for the day. Up until now there has been no real solution to this problem. Some of the common desires that women have are to have a handbag that they can change in an instant that would not only be color coordinated, but a change of style and/or size. Another desire is to be able not only to change those issues but also to be able to change the color of the hardware from silver to gold or maybe bronze or possibly a combination of two or more metal colors. The handbags hardware may include handle rings, feet of which the handbag sets on and any metal decorations the handbag may feature. Most handbags may have either silver or gold hardware. Women also wish to have a handbag that they can travel with whereas they only have to take one handbag and would be able to color coordinate with any outfit they bring to travel with.

Many attempts have been made to solve some of the handbag problems, however they have not been able to eradicate all of the issues as stated above. My present invention solves all these issues.

For instance, the invention titled “pocketbook with interchangeable covers” U.S. Pat. No. 7,028,730 has interchangeable covers that fit over one style and size foundation handbag. With this particular invention one can not change the style or size or the hardware color. Also you are “stuck” so-to-speak with the same color and size handles. The only advantage to this cited reference is the fact that you can change the color and design of the material of the handbag.

Another invention titled “interchangeable handbag” U.S. Pat. No. 6,971,424 is extremely limited in its' capabilities to fit the needs of what women desire in a handbag today. The invention basically has inserts that also fit within one style and size handbag. Once again one is also limited to the same size and color of handle. With this invention you can only change a portion of the basic handbag since it is a center insert of which you can change the color and/or design of the material. That is not much of a change. It does not fulfill the needs of what women want in a handbag.

Once again another handbag invention titled “interchangeable carrying bag system” U.S. Pat. No. 6,543,499 falls far short of filling the needs and wants of today's women when it comes to handbags. Its' foundation bag is fitted with detachable handles and also as with the first cited reference it has covers that fit over the foundation bag. Once again one is limited to one style and one size handbag. I would not be inclined to think women will want to take the time to place a strip of the material that is included in the system to cover up the hook and loop tape should they want to use the foundation bag as their choice for the day nor to take it off to fit a different cover over the foundation bag. Another drawback is that women will more than likely lose this strip over time. As with the other cited inventions within, the interchangeability is very limited and therefore does not encompass all the needs that women have today for a handbag.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

My newly invented carrying bag lining system I call the “Quick Change Purse”. The carrying bag may sometimes be referred to but not limited to and can include, purse, bag, handbag, tote, pocketbook, briefcase, laptop case, or any other carrying bag. It is designed with a removable interior lining that can be expanded or contracted so one can quickly change their carrying bag without removing any personal contents of their bag to the one they desire at the moment. For instance, just remove the interior lining that contains all of the purse's contents and place it in another purse (designed for the system) of one's choice. Depending on the size and/or shape of the purse it is fitted into, said interior lining can be expanded (if the present purse one is fitting is larger) referring to making the said interior lining longer in length by unfastening the lining material to make larger with devices such as but not limited to zippers, snaps, magnets and/or hook and loop tape also known as velcro, or contracted referring to making the interior lining shorter in length by fastening the lining material to make smaller with said devices of the same means aforementioned, if the newly chosen purse is smaller than the previous one that was used. Also, expandable and contractible refers to two or more interior linings that can be fastened together or taken apart using, but not limited to said fastening devices to expand the amount of said linings one would like to use in a bag or lessen the amount of said linings used for a smaller bag of which refers to filling the depth of a carrying bag.

The expandable and contractible interior lining (which may be referred to as the bag lining, lining or carrying bag lining) of the carrying bag is removable and may or may not be detachable by the use of a fastener. Said lining may or may not contain separate compartment(s) that may be removable. Said separate compartments may be made with but not limited to any material such as cloth, plastic or any combination of materials and may or may not contain closure devices but not limited to ones such as zippers, magnetic closures, buttons, snaps and/or velcro. The bag lining may be attachable and detachable by means of but not limited to devices such as velcro, snaps, zippers, buttons or without any said device. Said carrying bag expandable and contractible lining is not limited to any one style, size, shape, ornamentation or color.

The separate adaptable exterior bag of the “Quick Change Purse” sometimes referred to as the outer bag, may be made of but not limited to any material such as cloth, plastic, wood, or any combination of materials that is suitable for carrying bags and is not limited to any one style, size, shape, ornamentation or color and not limited to any one device for closure. Said exterior bags may or may not have attachable and/or removable or convertible outer covers for versatility of design, color and style. These adaptable exterior bags comprising of removable expandable and contractible interior linings as described above may or may not be reversible.

One of the adaptable carrying bags for the expandable and contractible lining system will include, but not limited to adaptable carrying bags made of transparent plastic not limited to any one style, size or shape. When said removable lining is inserted into this adaptable transparent plastic carrying bag the choice of the color and design of the said lining will give the transparent bag a different color and design each time the said lining is interchanged with a different color and design choice and inserted inside the transparent bag. The design and/or color and/or ornamentation of the said lining will show through the clear plastic giving the said outer bag the appearance of changing its color and/or design of fabric depending upon which lining is chosen to be inserted into the transparent bag.

Another feature of the invention is that the interior removable lining may be reversible where one may turn it inside out to change colors and/or design and when removed can be used as a separate carrying bag. Said lining may have handles for use as a separate carrying bag of which the handles may be removable and may be, but not limited to a drawstring, wood, ribbon, plastic, whereas any other effective materials and/or devices may be used.

One of the features of my new invention allows women to change in a moments notice the color and design of their handbag or carrying bag without the hassle and time to remove all of their personal contents while allowing them not to be restricted by color, style, shape or size of the bag because the said lining is not only removable but is expandable and contractible in length and/or depth as described in the first paragraph of this summary.

The transparent plastic carrying bag that is one aspect of the newly invented lining system allows women to travel with one bag and carry the colored linings of their choice for lightweight travel therefore enabling them to color coordinate their carrying bag with all their outfits. Said linings may be manufactured with any type of suitable material of any ornamentation, color and/or design of fabric. By interchanging the linings, they can achieve several different looks with only one handbag depending upon the amount of linings they choose to travel with.

Another feature of the removable lining system allows women to have yet two other choices. The invention allows the said lining to be used as a second and third carrying bag of one's choice. When said lining is removed it is made to be used separately if one wishes to do so as another carrying bag. Also, said removable lining may be reversible and when turned inside out it is another choice of color and/or design to coordinate with a woman's outfit. For example, this new invention is a perfect solution should one be at the office and wants to go to dinner and change to an evening bag. All she has to do is remove the lining and she has another handbag to use for the evening. If she wishes she can reverse it by turning it inside out for yet another look and/or color. It also solves the problem when one travels and would like to carry only one handbag which then can be transformed into different colors and looks depending on the number of linings one travels with.

My new invention allows women to change in a moments notice the color and design of their handbag or carrying bag without the hassle and time to remove all of their personal contents while allowing them not to be restricted by color, style, shape or size of the bag because the interior removable lining system is expandable and contractible. The transparent plastic carrying bag that is one aspect of the newly invented lining system allows women to travel with one bag and carry only the colored linings of their choice within the bag for lightweight travel and still be able to coordinate their carrying bag with their outfit. Other choices that women have with my new invention is the ability to change the color and/or fabric design of the outer bag as said outer bag may be reversible or have other adaptable covers to place over the outer bag by use of fastening devices such as, but not limited to buttons, zippers or snaps or an other equally effective fastening devices for the said task. Said outer bags may also have convertible exteriors whereas the outer surface of said outer bag will have another layer of material that can be unfastened from either the front or the back and wrapped around to either the front or the back of the bag and refastened wherein the opposite side of this other layer will have a different color and/or design of fabric or ornamentation. The fastening device for the convertible exterior may be, but not limited to buttons, snaps, hook and loop tape or ornamental hooks.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring herein to the details of the drawings, (12) and (12A) will be referencing the expandable and contractible removable lining whereas (12) denotes said lining in its contracted state and (12A) denotes said lining in its expanded state.

FIG. 1, page 1 of 13 of the drawings depicts the expandable and contractible lining system whereas the interior lining (12) is shown in its contracted state (hence, the scrunched look of the material). The drawstrings (16) are used as one possible example as the fastening device for the system and are pulled as far as one wants to draw them up and tied to secure their position to fit into the handbag or outer bag (18) also referred to as a purse or carrying bag that is made for the system. Any fastening device may be used that is as equally effective to accomplish said task. Likewise, handbag (18) also referred to as carrying bag, outer carrying bag, outer bag or purse is not limited to the style, size or shape, color or design that is depicted in the drawing. The contracted interior lining (12) is fitted into the purse and in this instance secured by four snaps whereas (14) is denoting a snap. To secure the drawstring and to hold the lining in place (17) denotes a bow tied from the drawstring. This drawing is one example whereas any other equally effective fastening devices may be used in place of drawstrings and/or snaps.

Likewise, in FIG. 2, page 2 of the drawings the interior lining (12A) is shown in it fully expanded state whereas the drawstrings (16) are used to lengthen the lining by loosening the drawstrings to fit into the interior of a larger purse (18) that is made for the system. This drawing is one example, whereas any other equally effective fastening devices may be used in place of drawstrings (16) and/or snaps (14).

FIG. 3 shows two separate views (12) and (12A) of the removable interior lining. The perspective view (12) depicts the lining in its contracted state so that it may fit into a smaller carrying bag of which can be opened and secured to any length desired to fit into one of the carrying bags made for the system. Likewise view (12A) shows the lining in its totally expanded state so it may fit into a larger carrying bag. The drawings in no way denote any specific style, shape and/or size. The manufacture of the expandable and contractible interchangeable handbag lining system is not limited to any one style, size, and/or shape.

Also, two or more linings can be fastened together using, but not limited to said fastening devices mentioned herein to expand the amount of linings one would like to use in a carrying bag. This is shown on page 4 of the drawings FIG. 4. The interior lining (12A) is shown in its expanded form whereas drawstrings (16) are untied and loosened and are used as the device to expand the lining (12A). The drawing is showing two interior linings (12A) secured together with the use of a fastening device the snap (14). Depending upon the depth, meaning the distance from the front to the back, of the handbag made for the system, one can fasten as many interior linings together as needed or desired. This drawing FIG. 4 is one example whereas any other equally effective fastening devices may be used in place of snaps. As many interior linings as one would like can be fastened together to satisfy the need of the number of linings one can fit and would like in their purse whether the lining is in its expanded or contracted state. Number (19) denotes the drawstring casing.

FIG. 5, page 5 of the drawings perspective is showing one possibility of many styles that the carrying bag may look like (18) whereas it may have hook and loop tape (20) sewn on the interior as one alternative use for fastening and unfastening the interior removable lining.

A top and interior view FIG. 6, page 6 demonstrates the interior lining fitted into a handbag (18) using the hook and loop tape also known as velcro (20) to fasten said lining. This drawing also denotes a side compartment (22) also referred to as side pocket, which is sewn on the interior of the removable lining (12A). The side compartment may or may not have a zipper and is not limited to any or any one closure device. Any closure device that is equally effective may be used. The removable lining (12A) is not limited to the amount of organizational compartments, also referred to as organizational pockets, it may contain within the body of the said lining. One such organizational pocket (23) is shown in the drawing as having a zippered closure (21) whereas said pocket may also be removable by means of but not limited to snaps, buttons, velcro or any other fastening device that would be equally effective. Said organizational pocket (23) may be removed therefore used as but not limited to a make up bag, an evening bag sometimes referred to as a clutch or purse. Organizational compartment or pocket (23) may also have a removable handle. The remove ability of the organizational pocket (23) makes it possible for the interior lining (12A) to be reversed, meaning turned inside out. As stated previously, the interior lining (12A) can be removed and used as a separated handbag. When said pocket (23) is removed and the interior lining (12A) is reversed it can be used as another carrying bag giving the wearer yet another choice of a totally different color, design, and/or fabric and style.

In FIG. 6 the expanded lining (12A) (which may be referred to as the bag lining, interior lining or lining) of the outer carrying bag (18) is removable from said bag that is part of the system and may or may not be detachable from said bag by the use of a fastener. Said lining (12) and/or (12A) as depicted in the drawings may or may not contain separate compartment(s) within of which separate compartments may be made with but not limited to any material or fabric such as cloth, plastic or any combination of materials and may or may not contain closure devices but not limited to ones such as zippers, magnetic closures, buttons, snaps and/or velcro. For instance, these separate compartments within the expandable and contractible lining are shown in one instance in FIG. 6 and is showing a purse that is made for the system (18) fitted with the system's interior lining (12A) containing two separate compartments. One is the center zippered compartment (23) and the other is the side pocket compartment (22). This drawing denotes only one style of bag (18) and compartments (22) and (23). The system is not limited to any one carrying bag, its' style, color, material, size, or otherwise as aforementioned in the first paragraph of this specification. Said carrying bag expandable and contractible removable lining is not limited to any one style, size, shape, ornamentation or color nor limited in the scope aforementioned in the compartments used within the body of the said lining.

FIG. 6 and FIG. 7, pages 6 and 7 respectively, also depicts one possible right side view of a carrying bag (18) whereas the lining drawstrings (16) may be pulled through grommets (24) that are affixed to said bag (18) and therefore tied to secure said lining (12A). FIG. 7 shows the drawstrings tied in a bow at the top of said handbag (18). FIG. 8, page 7 is an exploded view of the drawstrings (16) pulled through the grommets (24) and then tied into a bow to secure said drawstrings (16). Any other fastening devices may be used that are equally as effective to accomplish this task. FIG. 9 and FIG. 10, page 8 of the drawings are respectively showing the left side of the carrying bag (18).

FIG. 11, page 9 of the drawings depicts the versatility of the removable lining, In its expanded form using elastic (28), the lining (12A) at the top of the page is shown as being the right side out with a side compartment (22) with a zipper (21). When the lining (12A) is reversed and therefore turned inside out which is depicted in the bottom drawing of FIG. 11, (12A) is shown with the heart pattern, one can use said lining (12A) as yet another handbag giving the choice of a different color and design pattern. The removable lining (12A) depicted in the drawing is showing elastic (28) used as an alternative device to expand and contract said lining instead of the drawstrings as shown previously. When said lining is inserted into the handbag and contents are placed within the body of the lining, it will upon itself because of the use of the elastic (28) automatically expand the lining length to fit into the handbag properly therefore filling the space needed. FIG. 11 also shows a top drawstring (25) fitted into a manufactured channel (25A) at the top of the lining (12A). The purpose of this top drawstring serves in two ways; one as a means of pulling on the drawstring (25) therefore making it easy to lift and remove said lining (12A) from the carrying bag and they are also used as handles when carrying and using the lining as a separate handbag. The snaps (14) are used to secure the lining (12A) onto the outer bag of one's choice. The number (31) denotes the exterior side of the lining (12A) and (32) denotes the interior side of the lining (12A).

Shown in FIG. 12 page 10 is the carrying bag (18) whereas the material of preference for this particular application of the invention is denoted in this drawing as a clear transparent plastic (18A). This makes it possible as stated previously under the “Field of Invention” paragraph one and also within the contents of “Summary of Invention” paragraph four to have nearly an unlimited choice of color and design for one to coordinate one single handbag with the outfits they choose to wear. The removable lining (12A) when inserted into the transparent handbag will show its design and color of fabric through the transparency of the plastic. For instance, if the lining (12A) is a black and white polka dotted material (12B), then the handbag will appear to be a black and white polka dotted handbag as denoted in the drawing as (12B). Likewise, if the lining (12A) is made of a hot pink and black striped fabric, then the transparent handbag will reflect the color hot pink and the striped design of the fabric and so forth with any color and design that is manufactured for the new invention.

Another option of the invention, removable purse handles (27) with snap hooks (28) as a possible fastening device is shown in the drawing FIG. 13. with metal rings (26) as a possible attachment device for the handles (27) which can also be used in place of the drawstrings and attached to the metal rings (26) referring to FIG. 15, page 13. Any attachment fastening device for the handles, handbag and lining may be used that would be equally effective for said application.

FIG. 13, page 11 of the drawings is showing how an outer pleated cover (33) can change the style, color and/or design of the handbag (18) when it is slipped over the handbag (18) which is fitted with the removable lining (12A). The fastening device depicted in the drawing is a button (34) of which four are shown attached to the body of the handbag (18) therefore enabling the outer pleated cover (33) to be secured by buttoning it onto the handbag (18) with the buttonholes (34A). FIG. 13A is showing the handbag (18) when the said cover (33) is secured onto the handbag (18) with the buttons (34).

FIG. 14, page 12 of the drawings is showing how the handbag (18) fitted with the removable liner (12A) can change colors, style, and/or design by the use of a convertible outer cover (39) which is depicted with a heart fabric (35). The top drawing of FIG. 14 is showing said cover (39) fastened to the front of the handbag (18) with a button (36). Handle (27A) may or may not be removable on the outer bag (18). Depicted in the bottom drawing of FIG. 14 is the convertible outer cover (39) unbuttoned by means of an elastic loop (38). Shown on the right side of said drawing is the convertible outer cover (39) opened fully depicting its inner surface (37) and also the buttons (36A) which makes the convertible outer cover (39) removable.

FIG. 14A, page 12 is a drawing of the back of the handbag (18) and is showing the convertible outer cover (39) wrapped around to the back of the handbag (18) and fastened with a decorative button (35B) which changes the look, color and design of the handbag.

FIG. 15, page 13 is showing the expandable and contractible lining in its fully expanded form (12A) by means of elastic (28) and is depicting a removable organizational compartment (23) shown with a star pattern and a zipper closure (21). The elastic loop (38) shown on the right side of the lining (12A) is the means by which the removable compartment (23) is fastened with a button (36A) shown in FIG. 15A. The said lining (12A) also has another zippered organizational pocket (22) attached to its front and metal rings (26) to attach handles if one chooses. Number (14) denotes the snaps that may be used as a fastening device to attach the lining (12A) into an outer bag made for the system.

FIG. 15A, page 13 is showing the organizational pocket (23) removed from the lining (12A). The buttons (36A) are part of the fastening device as previously mentioned above and the metal ring (26) has a removable handle (27A) attached to it using a hook clasp (28).

Since only a few of the embodiments have been shown and described within these present pages, it is obvious that many variations and/or modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. With all the ways that this new invention can be manufactured and used I feel it might also be referred to as “The Miracle Purse” and/or “The Magic Purse”.
