DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

In accordance with the present invention, a card game is disclosed. The card game is directed to a game to be played by 2 or more players. The game includes a plurality of numbered picture cards (FIG. 1-3) with symbols and a plurality of control cards (FIG. 4-6). The goal of the game broadly is for a player to capture as many picture cards as possible. A game could be played until a certain time limit, in which case the player with the most picture cards would win or alternatively the game can be played until an instant win card causes one player to instantly win.

FIGS. 1-6 shows examples of various cards to illustrate the preferred embodiment. In reading the description of these cards it would be helpful to refer to FIGS. 7-11 that show examples of how the game is played. FIG. 1 shows a Jam jar numbered picture card 110, a tree numbered picture card 120 and a photo-synthesizer numbered picture card 100.

While three illustrative numbered picture cards have been shown in FIG. 1, a deck of cards contains a total of 600 numbered picture cards. The numbered picture cards are as follows:

1. Jar of Jam 75 cards 2. Tree 74 cards 3. Photo-Synthesizer 74 cards 4. Leaf 74 cards 5. Mushroom 75 cards 6. Mosquito 74 cards 7. Fly 74 cards 8. Slug 74 cards 9. Joker  6 cards

Any number of these cards may be used in a single game and any number of players might play so long as each player has at least one numbered picture card. This is a card game that is fast moving and could be played by a fairly large number of people.

Referring to FIG. 1 three example numbered cards are shown. Each card 100, 110, 120 includes several types of indicia. Card 100 is a typical number card and includes a phrase 101 at the top, and image 102, each card includes numbered factors such as strength number 103 and a protection number 105, a symbol 104, 105 and a card number 106. The phrase 101 in this case is ‘Twin front grabbers’. The image 102 is of a race car. The strength number 103 for this card is S59, strength rating can be as low as 1 and as high as 100. The strength number will be different for each of the 74 Photo-Synthesizer cards. The symbol 104 for this card is a plant representing Photo-Synthesis. The protection number 105 for this card is P53 and for cards can range from 1 to 100, generally the higher the higher the number the stronger is the card. The card number 106 for this card is 21 and can range from 1-74, the card number generally distinguishes and numbers each card. During most play the indicia 103, 104 and 105 across the bottom of the numbered cards are the most important for play. The phrase 101 on each card and image 102 on each card are different and relate the game to a comic or animated series with the same images and phrases. As mentioned above there are nine types of numbered cards, FIG. 1 shows examples of a Photo-Synthesizer card 100, a jam jar card 110 and a tree card 120. Each numbered card is laid out the same as 100 with a strength number, symbol and protection number across the bottom. Card 110 includes a symbol of a jam jar 112, a strength 114 of S98, and a protection 116 of P99. Card 120 has a tree symbol 122, a strength 124 of S92 and a protection 126 of S97. The images, phrases, and symbols can come from a purchased media source that gives them meaning such as a comic book, website, or an animated or live action movie for example. The card game thus encourages purchase of the media product.

FIG. 2 shows three more example number cards fly 130, slug 140 and Joker 150. The fly card 130 has an symbol of a fly 132, a strength factor 134 of S22 and a protection factor 136 of P03. The slug card 140 has a symbol 142 of a slug, a strength factor 144 of S50 and a protection 146 of P41. The Joker card 150 has a symbol 152 of a joker and can have any effect in the game that users define. There are fewer jokers 150 than other number cards, in this case there are 6 joker cards 150.

FIG. 3 shows the final three examples of number cards. The leaf number card 160 has a strength 164 of S39 a symbol 162 of a leaf and a protection factor 166 of P13. The mushroom card 170 has a symbol 172 of a mushroom, a strength factor of S12 and a protection factor of P34. The mosquito number card example 180 has a strength factor 184 of ‘29’, a protection factor of ‘P02’ and the mosquito symbol 182.

In addition to the numbered cards 100-180 there are control cards. FIG. 4 shows examples of control cards. Control card 400 is an example of the protection card. The protection card 400 and other control cards contain an image 404 that comes from a source such as a comic, animated series, web site or live action movie for example. When the protection control card 400 is drawn the card with the highest protection number normally wins. The “P” 402 indicia on the protection control card 400 identifies it. There can also be instructions on the protection card 400 that will change the outcome. There are 15 protection cards in a deck these include 14 with instructions. Instructions included on individual cards include:

    • 1. Any player holding a “Tree”, “Mosquito” or “Slug” has to draw a new card.
    • 2. The player with the lowest “P” number, reverses this number.
    • 3. Instant loss to the holder of a “Slug” or “Mushroom”.
    • 4. Any player holding a “Photo-Synthesizer”, trade your card with the player to your right.
    • 5. Instant win to the holder(s) of a “Photo-Synthesizer” or a “leaf”.
    • 6. All players reverse the “P” number during this hand.
    • 7. The holder of the lowest “P” card wins.
    • 8. If winner holds a “Leaf” take one card from any player of choice.
    • 9. All players holding a “Tree” add 10 points to “P”.
    • 10. All players holding a “Mosquito” lose 10 points from “P”.
    • 11. All players holding a “Photo-Synthesizer” or “Mushroom” add 10 points to “P”.
    • 12. All players holding a “Jam jar” lose 10 points from “P”.
    • 13. “P” becomes “S” and “S” becomes “P” on your card during this hand.
    • 14. The holder of the highest “P” card trade with the holder of the lowest “P” card.

The strength control card 410 is identified by the “S” indicia 412. The strength control card example 410 includes special instructions 414 at the bottom of the card; “The holder of the lowest “S” card wins. Normally if the strength control card is drawn the highest numbered “S” card would win.

FIG. 4 also shows the instant win with strength card 420 and is identified by the S indicia 424 in the lower left hand of the card. When an instant win card 420 is drawn, those with the particular symbol the Jar of Jam 112a win. On the instant win with strength 420 card shown the example image is “Jar of Jam” image 112a which is an enlargement of jar of jam symbol 112 from FIG. 1. If there are two or more players holding a picture card with the “Jar of Jam” symbol 112a, then these players will draw another control card until a winner of the particular hand is determined. The winner takes all the numbered cards that were in play during the particular hand and place them on the bottom of their stack of cards, control cards will return to the bottom of the control card stack. If none of the cards in play have the Jar of jam 112 symbol then the winner will be determined by strength. In addition to the Jar of Jam Instant win with strength card 420 there are instant win with strength control card with the images of Tree, Photo-synthesizer, leaf, mushroom, mosquito, fly and slug.

FIG. 5 shows three additional control card examples. The Instant loss with strength control card 500 includes the international symbol for “no”, 502 over the Jar of Jam 112a. This means that players with the Jar of Jam 112 symbol on their numbered card lose the hand instantly. The strength symbol S 504 identifies that strength is then used to determine the winner. If there are multiple players holding a Jar of Jam 112 card then these players will draw another control card to determine the winner based on Strength “S”. The winner takes all the numbered cards that were in play in a particular hand. Instant loss with strength control cards can include each of the 8 numbered card symbols 104, 112, 122, 132, 142, 162, 172, 182.

FIG. 5 also shows a capture with strength card 510. When the capture with strength card is drawn, the player holding a card with the tree symbol 122 in a full circle 512 takes the cards in play of players holding the jar of Jam symbol 112 shown in the partial circle 514. If more than one player hold a card with the tree symbol 122 then strength “S” is used to determine the winner as indicated by the “S” indicia 516. Once the players with the tree symbol 122 cards have taken the Jar of Jam cards then if the winner of the hand has still not been determined then the winner will be determined on Strength but the player holding the tree 122 and the jar of jam cards can pick the highest strength “S” card of the tree 122 and Jar of Jam 112 cards he is holding. Capture control cards could include any of the 8 numbered card images capturing any of the other remaining 7 numbered card images. Examples include “Fly takes Jar of Jam” and “Tree takes leaf”.

Also in FIG. 5 the saw card 520 is used to kick out a particular player during a hand, or to cancel one hand all together and have control cards and player's number cards reshuffled. The saw card 520 is recognized by it's saw image 524. The saw card 520 must first be won by a particular player and may be held by that player after it is won and used when needed. To win the saw card 520 with “S” indicia 522 the player holding the highest strength “S” card during the play when the saw card 520 is drawn wins the saw card 520 and the hand. During another hand, if the player holding the saw card 520 feels they will lose with the current control card then they may choose to either kick another player out of the hand, have a new control card dealt or cancel the hand. Once the saw card 520 is played it must be placed back in the deck.

FIG. 6 shows two other control card examples, rain with strength 600 and joker 610. Like the saw card 520 the rain card 600 must be won in a hand and then is held by a player for use later in the game. When played the rain with strength card 600 may be used to change the control card or to change their card to another symbol by drawing another card. If the second card is the same symbol as the first, the player may draw again until a new symbol is found. This card 600 may be used by an individual holding the same symbol on their number card. If two or more players have the same symbol, then a second card will be drawn and played. This will continue until only one holding the symbol remains. If by chance, no one holds the symbol following a redraw, then the card 600 is discarded back into the deck. To win the rain card with strength the player holding the highest “S” card during the hand when the rain card 600 is drawn will win it. Once used the rain card 600 will be discarded. Any of the control cards 500, 510, 520 or 600 that show the strength symbol “S” can have a similar card that would show the “P” symbol and for these cards the protection symbol would control the use of the card in the way that strength was used in cards 500, 510, 520 and 600.

FIG. 6 also shows the joker card 610 which can control play in any manner determined by the players prior to the start of the game. The cards shown in FIGS. 1-6 make up a deck of cards. During play the deck is divided into stacks of numbered cards for each player, and a stack of control cards.

FIGS. 7-11 each give examples of play of a single hand to serve as examples to explain the game. A game consists of several hands played sequentially until a winner is determined. Referring now to FIG. 7, the play field 710 shows the cards at the start of a hand. Each of the cards 712, 714, 716 and 718 are displayed face down, the back side of each card 712, 714, 716 and 718 shows backside artwork of the “Woodlands” image that again relates to a comic, animated series, movie or website. The control card 712 is to the left and each player has a number card face down. It will be understood that each card 712, 714, 716 and 718 may be the top card of a stack of cards that are dealt out at the start of the game. The goal is for one player to capture all the number cards in stacks 714, 716 and 718. The playing field 720 shows the next step of play each player turns over their top card so it is now face up. The control card 712 remains face down. Player one has jam jar 714a with “S” strength 19 and “P” protection 45; player 2 has the fly card 716a with a strength “S” of 01 and a protection of 19 and player 3 has a jar of jam card 718a with a strength “S” of 90 and a protection of “P” 94. The play field 730 shows the next step of the hand with the control card “Not Jar of Jam” 712a revealed. Players 1 and 3 lose instantly as their number cards 714a and 718a display jar of jam symbol 112 and player 2 wins and collects the three cards 714, 716 and 718. Then the next hand is played.

FIG. 8 shows play by play of another hand. The play field 800 shows the start of another hand of play with all cards 814, 816 and 818 face down. The next play field 810 shows the player number cards 814a, 816a and 818a revealed, the control card 812 is still face down. Play field 820 shows the next step of play with the control card a joker 812a revealed. Before the game is played, the players decide to make a customized game by using the various jokers found in the deck. In this case, the players predetermined that a joker control card 812a has the following value, “holders of a tree card win”. As there are no tree symbol 122 cards in play, the joker 812a is placed at the bottom of the deck and another control card is drawn.

FIG. 9 shows another example play by play. The play field 900 shows the start of the hand of play with all cards 912, 914, 916 and 918 face down. The next field of play 910 shows the player number cards 914a, 916a and 918a revealed, the control card is still face down. Playfield 920 shows the next step of play with the control card ‘no jam jar’ 912a revealed. As player 1 is displaying a ‘Jam Jar’, player 1 loses instantly. Player 2 and 3 compete with each other based on the highest ‘P’ number which is held by player 3 ‘P40’. Player 3 wins the hand and takes the numbered cards displayed by player 1 and 2 and the control card 912a is placed on the bottom of the deck.

FIG. 10 shows an example of play by play between two players. The play field 1000 shows the start of the hand of play with all cards 1012, 1014 and 1016 face down.

The next play field 1010 shows the player numbered cards 1014a and 1016a revealed, the control card 1012 is still face down. Playfield 1020 shows the next step of play with the control card ‘strength’ 1012a revealed. Player 1 with a strength of S52 wins and takes the card 1016a of player 2.

FIG. 11 shows another example of play by play between two players. The play field 1100 shows the start of the hand of play with all cards 1112, 1114 and 1116 face down. The next play field 1110 shows the played numbered cards 1114a and 1116a revealed, the control card 1112 is still face down. Playfield 1120 shows the next step of play with control card Protection with instructions 1112a revealed. In this case the instructions 1113 instruct that, “All players holding a tree symbol card can add 10 points to “P”. As player 1 is displaying a card 1114a with a tree symbol, 10 points is added to their “P” number 85 plus 10=95. Player 1 wins and takes the card of player 2.

The FIGS. 12-14 are devoted to the online version of the game and its relationship to the deck version. FIG. 12 shows the sign up screen 1200 for the game. A player goes online and sees the sign in screen 1200. A player must enter the online game number 1201 obtained from a source such as an advertisement, website or a comic book that contains a story based on the images and symbols used on the numbered cards and control cards. The player then picks a profile either ‘tree’ 1204, mushroom 1206, or sun 1208. The Player enters identifying information 1214 such as their address and e-mail address and phone number. The players get a profile number 1215 and hits enter 1216 to enter a game.

FIG. 13 shows that players can alternatively choose nature 1301, “Good” nature cards (Jam Jar, Tree, Photo-Synthesizer and leaf) to play against “Bad” nature cards (Mushroom, Mosquito, Fly and Slug). Players can choose nature 1302, “Bad” nature cards (Mushroom, Mosquito, Fly and Slug) to play against “Good” nature cards. Nature 1303 gives all cards mixed. FIG. 13 shows a touch screen 1305 where a game can be set up and played. The players pick a player number from player number box 1310 in the lower left of the screen 1305. The number of players can be 1 to 10. Each player enters their player code and hits enter 1308 so that the system can associate a player code and profile 1215 with a player number box 1310 in the game. The action can occur with all players at a single computer monitor or players may be remotely located and access the game through the Internet. The system will automatically deal out face down numbered cards such as those shown in FIGS. 1-3 on each player box 1310. The system can play so that a single player can compete against the system. If the system is playing its numbered cards will appear in box 1320. Control cards similar to those shown in FIG. 4-6 will be revealed in box 1352 in FIG. 14. If any player has retained a Rain or Saw card, the corresponding rain box 1335 or Saw box 1336 will become activated. Only the players who have won this card can play it by activating their numbered box 1310 and then activating the saw 1335 or Rain 1336 box. The player then touches which of the saw 1335 or rain 1336 card they wish to play. If the system is a player its saw 1337 and rain 1338 will be indicated. As each hand is dealt out the play is similar to the play by play shown in examples in FIGS. 7-11. The computer determines the winner of each hand and distributes cards won to the boxes 1310 or 1320 of the winning player. Play can continue for a specified time period or until all of the cards in play have been captured by one player. When a player is declared a winner the system can keep track of this win such as by adding 1 point to the profile of the winning player such that competitions for the best player can be held. After a winner is declared the system can ask if the player wish to play again.

FIG. 14 shows an example of the online version of the game in play. In this game the mix of cards 1303 has been chosen. There are two players and the computer playing. Player box 1310 shows that each player has 25 cards to start and the computer box 1320 shows that the computer currently has 25 cards. As play progresses the number of cards in boxes 1310 and 1320 will change as players win and lose cards. The touch screen 1305 can include a play field 1350 where the control cards 1352 and numbered cards of player 1 1354, player 2 1356, and the computer 1358 are displayed. The play field displays cards in a manner similar to the play fields shown in FIGS. 7-11.

To play the online game a person already registered with the system would take the following steps:

    • 1. Go to website using computer with touch screen 1305,
    • 2. Enter online game number 1201,
    • 3. Enter a profile number 1215,
    • 4. review profile 1215 and enter game 1216,
    • 5. Select type of game good 1301, bad 1302 or mix 1303
    • 6. Select additional players by touching boxes 1310,
    • 7. Enter player code in boxes 1310 (the first player code will already be entered)
    • 8. The system deals numbered cards to each player, for example 25 to each player,
    • 9. The control card 1352 is displayed, a numbered card 1354, 1356 and 1358 is shown for each player and a winner is determined,
    • 10. The numbered cards remaining for each player is calculated and displayed in boxes 1310 and 1320.
    • 11. If any player has retained a rain or saw card it will be displayed 1335, 1336, 1337, 1338,
    • 12. The game will continue until a player has all the cards or until time expires,
    • 13. The winner will have 1 point added to their points total associated with their online profile.
    • 14. The players are given the option to play again or quit.

With each win against the computer, the player receives one point which is logged into their online profile. Based on these points, a set of 7 cards can be produced to be awarded to individuals obtaining certain points. For example, after obtaining 10 points, the first card is mailed out to the address given 1214 given when the player registered online. A player can hold all cards as they progress. Once they have reached 100 points and have received the final card of the series, they can start over an collect a second series of the same cards.

These cards won online are not available anywhere else and can be added to the players physical deck at home to change their game. The 7 cards are:

Points to get card Card name Description 10 points 1501 Storm Instant win 20 points 1502 Instant win, take 1 cards from opponent Earthquake 30 points 1503 Tornado Instant win, take 2 cards from opponent 40 points 1504 Hurricane Instant win, take 3 cards from opponent 50 points 1505 Cyclone Instant win, take 5 cards from opponent 75 Points 1506 Tsunami Instant win, take 8 cards from opponent 100 Points 1507 Total Instant win, take last cards played, Disaster take 4 cards from top and 4 from bottom of Opponent's deck

The special cards 1501, 1502, 1503, 1504, 1505, 1506 and 1507 have the same artwork on their back side as the other cards of the deck which were purchased separately. Thus the special cards 1502-1507 match the deck and can be used with it in play. In addition to the special cards that are won online and used for physical card play in a deck, online players can also win prizes based on a number of wins against the computer. For example, a player might win a trip based on 1000 points. The points can be counted online but might also be registered by a person sending in special cards totaling 1000 points. This allows a non-online player to win special cards in tournaments from other players and thereby become eligible for the prize. There can also be other special cards, for example there can be ‘golden cards’ which entitle the finder to have their own character made into a card an added to the game or comic. Golden cards can be placed in media products like comic books or in packages containing a deck of cards. Alternatively an online player might earn a golden card through points scored or by turning in other special cards 1501-1507 for example.
