Grappling hook

Abstract

A grappling hook is disclosed which is designed to be used by a person having lost the dexterity in a hand or fingers. The grappling hook is formed AS a strap of flexible material. The strap is formed into a loop at one end which loop is to be placed around the wrist of a wearer. The other end of the strap is formed into a straight section which has an opening in its end. A grommet is placed into the opening. A circular eyelet made of metal is placed into the grommet. The circular eyelet continues in a straight section and a U-shaped hook appears at that end. The U-shaped hook is used to be attached to any item the person wants to manipulate.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

There are many people having lost use of their hands or at least the dexterity in the use of their fingers. These people cannot open drawers by grasping the knob or the U-shaped pull. They cannot pull certain items such as luggage or pick up handbags. It is, therefore, desirable to have a simple implement available that is low cost in production but is very effective to overcome the above mentioned inflictions.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The inventive device is a simple hook that is attached to a strap which in turn continues into a loop that is worn around the wrist of a user. The hook is attached to any item that needs to be handled such as a handle of a handbag or a pull of a drawer or any item to which a hook can be attached. Once attached to the item, the user uses his arm with the loop attached to the wrist to move the item to a predetermined place. It could even be a ring on a dog collar.

U.S. Pat. No. 194040 discloses a strap and a hook which is described as a napkin holder.

U.S. Pat. No. 7,640,895 illustrates a hook and a strap. However, this arrangement cannot be used for the intended purpose that is, as a grappling hook, for a person who has lost the dexterity in the use of the hand or the fingers.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The inventive hook device is made of a strap that is so arranged that it forms a loop to be placed around the wrist of a wearer which strap continues into a single strap which, at an end, has a hook attached thereto.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In FIG. 1 there is shown the hook that is part of the invention. The hook consists of a U-shaped loop that will form the part of the device that will hook onto the things to be grabbed or pulled. The U-shaped hook on one side continues into a straight section 2 which forms a circular eyelet at its other end.

FIG. 2 illustrates how the hook device is attached to a strap. The strap that forms a loop 4. One end of the loop continues into a straight section 5. The straight section can be made in different ways. FIG. 2 shows the straight section as being separately attached to the loop section 4 but the strap that forms the loop 4 could also be doubled back upon itself to thereby form the straight section 5. At the end of the straight section there is formed a grommet 6 which could be made of stainless steel or aluminum to prevent any rusting of the metal. The grommet 5 should be made of such a size so that the circular eyelet 3, once placed into the grommet, can freely rotate therein. The wrist of the wearer is shown as W to illustrate the use of the inventive device.

Following is an example of the construction of the grappling hook: The strap could be made of a 1 inch wide Nylon webbing 0.705 inch thick and approximately 2 feet long. The strap could be folded in half so that the ends meet. At an inch mark from the end, a seam could made to form a straight end 5. The rest of the strap will form a loop 4 which can be placed around the wrist W of a person. About ¾ inch from the end of the straight strap a hole is formed to receive the metal grommet 6

OPERATION

When the strap is placed around the wrist W, this allows an able bodied person, but more importantly, a disabled person having lost the hand's or fingers' dexterity to pick up just about anything to which the hook 1 can be attached. This includes fallen branches at the outdoors, to open cabinet or car doors, refrigerator doors, washers and dryers or help oneself to get dressed, start motors and take out the garbage. Further uses are to pick up buckets, gas cans, tackle boxes etc.

Claims

1. A grappling hook to be used by a person with a minimum of dexterity in the hands or fingers, said grappling hook comprising of a U-shaped end which continues on one side in a strait section and a circular eyelet is formed at another end, said circular item is placed in a circular grommet which is located at end of a strait section of a strap, said strap ends in a loop which is place around a wrist of a user.

2. The grappling hook of claim 1, wherein said grommet is formed of a rust proof material.

3. The grappling hook of claim 1, wherein said strap is formed of a 1 inch wide nylon material.
