Boat Hull

A boat hull (10) including a longitudinally extending side wall (12) and a longitudinally extending bottom wall (13). The side wall (12) has an internal surface (16), and the bottom wall (13) an internal surface (17). Fixed to the surface (16) and/or (17) is an insulation member (19) that inhibits the transmission of noise to the interior of the hull (10).

Description
TECHNICAL FIELD

The present invention relates to boat hulls with chines.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

In boats that have a chine the side wall of the boat is joined to a bottom wall by a longitudinally extending hull strip extending along the chine.

The above hull construction has a disadvantage is that lapping waves at the chine engage the strip and generate noise.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

It is the object of the present invention to overcome or at substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

There is disclosed herein a boat hull having an intended water line, and positioned adjacent the water line including:

a longitudinal side wall extending downwardly to a chine;

a longitudinal extending bottom wall;

a longitudinally extending strip joining the side wall and the bottom wall adjacent the chine; and

an insulation member providing a cavity adjacent the chine and strip to inhibit the transmission of noise.

Preferably, the insulation member has a longitudinally extending upper portion fixed to the side wall, and a longitudinally extending lower portion fixed to the bottom wall.

Preferably, said cavity is filled with an insulation material.

In an alternative preferred form, said cavity is a void.

Preferably, said cavity has a height and a width, with said height greater than said width.

Preferably, said height is at least three times the width.

Preferably, said chine has a longitudinal length, and said member has a longitudinal length less than the longitudinal length of said chine.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a boat hull 10. The boat hull 10 includes a longitudinally extending side wall 12 and a longitudinally extending bottom wall 13.

Below the side wall 12 is a longitudinally extending chine 14, with the chine 14 being joined to the side wall 12 and bottom wall 13 by a longitudinally extending hull strip 15.

The side wall 12 has an internal surface 16, the bottom wall 13 an internal surface 17, and the strip 15 an internal surface 18.

Fixed to the surface 16 and/or surface 17 and/or surface 18 is an insulation member 19.

In one example the walls 12 and 13 are formed of aluminium and the member 19 also of aluminium welded to the surfaces 16 and 17. In an alternative preferred form, the walls 12 and 13 are formed of fibre glass, and the member 19 also formed of fibre glass and secured to the surfaces 16 and 17.

The insulation member 19 has a substantial portion spaced from the surface 16 so that the insulation member 19 in cooperation with the surfaces 16 and 18 generally enclose a cavity 20.

The cavity 20 may merely be a void or it may be filled or partly filled with a sound insulation material.

As best seen in FIG. 3, the insulation member 19 extends longitudinally of the chine 14 for a portion of the length of the chine 14.

The insulation member 19 extends along the side wall 12 at a position adjacent the intended water line 21 of the boat hull 10.

The above described preferred embodiment has the advantage that at the position adjacent where the water line 21 intersects the chine 14, any noise generated by lapping water is inhibited from being transferred to the interior of the hull 10 by the cavity 20.

Claims

1. A boat hull having an intended water line, and positioned adjacent the water line including:

a longitudinal side wall extending downwardly to a chine;
a longitudinal extending bottom wall;
a longitudinally extending strip joining the side wall and the bottom wall adjacent the chine; and
an insulation member providing a cavity adjacent the chine and strip to inhibit the transmission of noise.

2. The boat hull of claim 1, wherein the insulation member has a longitudinally extending upper portion fixed to the side wall, and a longitudinally extending lower portion fixed to the bottom wall.

3. The boat hull of claim 1, wherein said cavity is filled with an insulation material.

4. The boat hull of claim 1, wherein said cavity is a void.

5. The boat hull of claim 4, wherein said cavity has a height and a width, with said height greater than said width.

6. The boat hull of claim 5, wherein said height is at least three times the width.

7. The boat hull of claim 1, wherein said chine has a longitudinal length, and said member has a longitudinal length less than the longitudinal length of said chine.
