Description
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application is based on Provisional Patent Application No. 61/585,942, filed Jan. 12, 2012, entitled “Receiver Arrangement for Rifle”, and on which priority of this patent application is based, and which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates generally to rifles, both of the sporting type and the military type. More particularly, it relates to a single piece receiver with integral scope mounting ridges that may be attached to single piece mounting block that is configured for attachment to a rifle stock, the single piece receiver may also include a connection configured for direct attachment of a rifle barrel.

2. Description of Related Art

Rifles are typically configured to include a barrel and a receiver, the receiver being coupled to the rearward end of the barrel and comprising an action. In some configurations, a float is interposed between the barrel and the action. The rifle also typically includes a stock with an action mounting portion that includes a mounting block having an upper surface upon which the action and receiver rest. The mounting block is typically part of the stock, but need not be. Many of theses rifles also include scope mounting ridges or may receiver aftermarket scope mounting ridges. Scope mounting ridges known in the art include Picatinny rails, Weaver rail mounts, MIL-STD-1913 rails, STANAG 2324 rails, and other devices that may be simply referred to as tactical rails. Typically, these mounting devices are attached to a rifle at the receiver and/or barrel by screws, and/or some other fasteners know in the art. This arrangement often suffers from misalignment of the scope due to movement of the fasteners and the mounting ridges or tactical rails. This is especially a problem with high powered precision rifles, since the strong kick from firing the rifle results in strong forces being transmitted throughout the rifle thereby losing the fasteners and the attached mounting ridges. A slight misalignment of the scope of a rifle can result in substantial misplacement of bullets fired at long range, for example in excess of 200 yards (182.9 meters). Similar issues also arise from fasteners or other parts used to attach barrels to a receiver of a rifle. Typically, rifle barrels are attached to rifle receiver by fasteners, and others also use a barrel extension and/or other parts between the barrel and the receiver when attaching the barrel to the receiver. These connections can loosen causing misalignment of the barrel, therefore causing misplacement of bullets fired from the rifle.

In the view of this, there is a need to configure a receiver with scope mounting ridges as a one-piece, unitary structure to prevent movement of the mounting ridges. There is also a need for a barrel connection in a receiver that does not use fasteners, but directly attaches to a rifle barrel. Such a unitary structure and a direct barrel attachment connection can enhance rifle performance and make the rifle more easily broken down and re-assembled when such is desired or required. An added advantage is that such a structure also eliminates or at least mitigates the movement of parts thereby increasing accuracy.

Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a new and useful rifle receiver and mounting block that make a rifle more rigid and therefore more accurate and precise.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is directed to a receiver arrangement including a mounting block for mounting the receiver rigidly to a rifle stock.

Referring to FIGS. 1, 5-8, and 9-12 there is shown a receiver 10. The receiver 10 includes a receiver body 12 having scope mounting ridges 14 and 16 adapted to receive a scope 17 for the rifle. Each of the mounting ridges 14 and 16 have a generally “T” shaped cross-section and include a plurality of slots 18 and projections 20 for receiving the scope 17 for the rifle. The receiver includes a bottom mounting surface 18 into which the receiver body 12 attaches to a mounting block 24. Preferably, the receiver is made from a unitary machined block of material or casted on a unitary piece which may then be machined.

Referring to FIGS. 2-4, and 9 the mounting block 24 defines a receiving cavity 26, as shown in FIGS. 3-5. Opposite ends of the mounting block 24 have mounting arrangements 28 and 30. As can be seen, the mounting arrangements have tapered surfaces 32a-32d. The mounting arrangements 28 and 30 mate with the bottom mounting surface 22 of the receiver 10. Appropriate fasteners attach the receiver 10 to the mounting block 24 and to an appropriate rifle stock 34 in a manner known in the art.

Referring to FIGS. 1, and 5-9, the receiver 10 is intended and configured to be used in a rifle. Accordingly, the receiver 10 is shown with bolt 36 which is used for firing ammunition through receiver 10. The bolt 36 includes bolt handle 38 for actuating the bolt 36. Trigger assembly 40 is shown attached to the receiver for actuating a firing pin (not shown) in the bolt 36 for firing ammunition through receiver 10.

Referring particularly to FIGS. 9-14, scope mounting ridges 14 and 16 of receiver 10 are shaped and dimensioned to receive a scope 17 or other mountable accessory to the receiver 10. Specifically, as discussed above, each of the mounting ridges 14 and 16 have a generally “T” shaped cross-section and include a plurality of slots 18 and projections 20 for receiving the scope for the rifle. The mounting ridges 14 and 16 have lower contact surfaces 42 and upper contact surfaces 44 which provide support for securing a scope 17 to mounting ridges 14 and 16 in left, right, up, and down directions relative to the receiver 10. While slots 18 and projections 20 provide support for securing a scope 17 to mounting ridges 14 and 16 in backward and forward directions relative to the receiver 10. One or both mounting ridges 14 and 16 may receive a scope 17 or other mountable accessory by means known in the art, specifically by using scope rings 46. Specifically, scope rings 46 designed to be secured to tactical rails can be used to secure a scope 17 to mounting ridges 14 and 16 in any matter known in the art.

A scope may be attached by sliding or otherwise positioning a scope ring 46 which includes a generally “C” shaped clamp 48 that is configured to receive the mounting ridges 14 and 16 by contacting lower contact surfaces 42 and upper contact surfaces 44. The scope ring 46 is then secured by tightening one or more set screws or by other means know in the art. The set screw pulls the generally “C” shaped clamp 48 toward a closed position and the set screw (not shown) may be received in a slot 18 or a projection (not shown) on the scope ring 46 may be received in slot 18 in any manner known in the art. The top ring portion of the scope rings 46 then receives a scope 17 by any means know in the art.

Referring particularly to FIGS. 9-14, the receiver 10 is adapted to directly receiver a rifle barrel 50. The receiver 10 includes a connection 52 for directly attaching a rifle barrel. The connection 52 may be an internal thread formed in the receiver 10 that is configured to receive a rifle barrel 50. The barrel 50 is attached to the receiver 10 by threading the barrel 50 into the internal threaded connection 52 of the receiver. The barrel 50 should be threaded tightly and securely into the receiver 10 to prevent loosening of the barrel 50. Directly attaching the rifle barrel 50 to the receiver 10 reduces the number of parts that could loosen the connection between the barrel 50 and the receiver 10, thereby increasing the rigidity of connection and the performance of the rifle. Direct attachment should be understood to mean that the rifle barrel 50 and the receiver 10 are in direct attachment. Securely as it relates to the barrel/receiver connection should be understood to mean that the barrel 50 and receiver 10 will stay rigidly attached to each other during normal operation of the rifle.
