Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The application relates to a method and apparatus for attaching a dummy suppressor around the barrel of a firearm, or other dischargeable device, particularly to a method and apparatus for attaching a dummy suppressor around the barrel of a dischargeable device wherein said dummy suppressor allows for the attachment of further end-barrel accessories.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Prior Art

Presently, certain laws dictate that the length of a firearm, or other dischargeable device, be at least a certain length. Likewise, certain laws also dictate that the length of the barrel of said dischargeable device must also be at least a certain length. These laws are meant to prevent potential weapons from being concealed. Due to these restrictions, some barrels extend further than the rail systems that cover the corresponding dischargeable device. The length of the barrel that extends beyond the end of the rail and protrudes bare from the rest of the weapon is considered by some to be unattractive and aesthetically unpleasing. For this reason, many people who use firearms, and other dischargeable devices, add a dummy suppressor to their weapon. The dummy suppressor does not provide any suppressive function, but simply covers the end of the barrel that would otherwise protrude bare from under the rail. Presently, the function of the dummy suppressor is solely aesthetic. On a related note, many people who use these weapons without a dummy suppressor attach a component to the end of the barrel which provides any combination of one or more of the following functions: muzzle brake, compensator, flash hider, and configuration-derived functions. A muzzle brake redirects gas expulsion from the barrel such that it prevents the front of the barrel of the weapon from climbing excessively due to discharging of the weapon. A compensator redirects gas expulsion from the barrel such that it prevents the weapon from moving excessively in the direction opposite to the trajectory of the ammunition. A flash hider reduces the visible signature of the burning gasses that exit the muzzle. Configuration-derived functions include, but are not confined to, configurations of muzzle end accessories that provide for breaking glass, wood or other solid materials; that allow for ease of travel through certain vegetation or wired obstacles; or that may be used as a striking object against an opponent. Presently, the addition of a dummy suppressor to the end of a weapon will require the removal of all other end-barrel accessories and prevents the addition of any component that provides any combination of the functions mentioned above: a muzzle brake function, compensator function, flash hider function, and configuration-derived functions.

According to the prior art, dummy suppressors for firearms, and other dischargeable devices, functionally-speaking, only act as barrel extensions to the gun without providing any real non-aesthetic function. Additionally, the attachment of such a dummy suppressor renders the barrel of the gun incompatible with any more accessories or attachments to the end of the barrel.

There exists a need for a dummy suppressor that provides for the additional attachment of extra accessories to the end of the barrel, such as accessories that acts as a muzzle brake, compensator, or flash hider, or that have configuration-derived functionality.

2. Objects and Advantages

Accordingly, several objects and advantages of this invention are:

    • (a) to provide an aesthetically pleasing addition to firearm, or other dischargeable device;
    • (b) to provide for the possible addition of a recoil compensator, muzzle brake, flash hider, or other accessory end-barrel attachments;
    • (c) to allow for an increase in accuracy of successive fire by redirecting gasses through an end-barrel attachment;
    • (d) to allow for maintaining the strength of a user's acquired night vision by hiding muzzle flare and prevent blinding of the shooter by the same;
    • (e) to allow for aid in concealment of the shooter by hiding muzzle flare;
    • (f) to allow for ease of travel through certain vegetation or wired obstacles or to use as a striking object against an opponent;

Further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a consideration of the drawings and ensuing description.
