CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 61/723,874, filed Nov. 08, 2012.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention is in the technical field of furniture. More particularly, the present invention is in the technical field of combination methods of two or three sofa.
One of the first inventions in the subject of combining the furniture was the design of sofa bed. This invention caused such changes at its age so that it is producing and trading widely so far. Other different combinations such as converting chair into study chair and desk, standard chair into rocker chair, chair into convertible backpack, cooler combination lounge chair, and the combination of chair and ironing board and etc. is also made. According to the changes in life pattern and sometimes decreasing the space of home and office or even multiple use of place for home, office and parlor, using furniture with invariable shape and pattern seems not to be economical and useful for such consumers.
One of the human prime needs in the present world is the need of diversity and change in the life environment. A sofa generally is used for a long time so the invariable color, shape and framework of them becomes tedious for the end user after a while and also variation needs funding. For example suppose the lobby of a grand hotel, if the manager plans to change the furniture, how much will it cost for the hotel and how much time it takes?
The production line of the furniture with a specified design will end after short time, and on the other hand, the reduction of total production and the ending of massproduction phase leads to increase in production costs and decrease in producer profits.
When consumers decide to change the decoration and purchase new furniture, many factors such as price, switching costs, limitation of the space, required time for this change, shape, color and design, being single-multi function and etc. could affect their choices. And also maybe consumers use one place for many purposes or they are facing with limitation of the space or budget to buy various designs.
Common sofa became timeworn sooner because of single side design and constant use of one side, and the cloth and material life time will decrease faster. And also changing the decoration and accessories and replacement of them usually requires a high budget and also the required time for this change is a considerable point.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention presents a kind of sofa which can be used on both sides, so that this feature can be added to different designs by make some changes. In this invention the capability to be used by both sides and the combination of two or three sofa into one sofa is considered regardless of design and color. This feature or capability can be presented in many varied designs and we can apply the combination of two different designs (almost in most of models) on one sofa.
Needing to create diversity in the decoration and furniture of life and work environment, and also the creation pace of this diversity and the required time for these changes is considered in this invention. Common sofa and chairs are produced with an invariable design and color and usually there's a useless empty space on the underside of the sofa. This invention is trying to use this empty space optimally and design two or three sofa into one.
In this invention another sofa is designed under the first sofa by optimal and maximum use of the interior space of the first sofa and armrests in ergonomic form and complies with existing standards of this industry. In this invention armrests and backrest's edges of the first sofa is usually used as the legs of another sofa.
In the present invention a dynamic mechanical system is used to design two or three sofa into one. In the first present model the seat bottom height can be adjusted by using a mechanical system to form another sofa on the other side with different pattern, shape, color and etc. In another model the backrest of the first sofa transforms to the flat mode to become parallel with the seat bottom and after a 180 degrees rotation of the two-sided sofa, the backrest of the second sofa converts to the standing mode with the help of recliner systems or any other simple lockable system and forms second sofa with different pattern and etc. The third model is a transformative three sided sofa which can be used as three different sofas by a 180 or 90 degrees rotation and using mentioned mechanical systems. This sofa has folding legs and also is able to convert in to bed. In this invention different sofa can be designed by changing the framework, color, cloth and materials. With the help of these methods another sofa will be formed with different pattern, color, shape and other features only by a rotation and in a short time, which has different view and matches with a different setting. For example consider the lobby of a grand hotel (mentioned in background section), now the manager can change the decoration by the help of this invention in a short time and with no cost.
Using both sides of a two-sided sofa instead of a common single side sofa can increase the useful life time of the furniture. The surface of common sofa will decay faster compared with a two-sided sofa due to constant use of one side. And also in some models of this invention transporting is much easier because of folding feature of the backrests of both sides.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION In the present invention, another sofa is embedded under each sofa so that another sofa will be formed by 180 or 90 degrees rotation of each sofa. In the present models a part of sofa such as backrest, seat bottom or legs need to be adjusted after rotation. Each model includes two or three sofa.
Referring now to the invention in more detail in FIG. 1A to FIG. 1L there is shown adjustable two-sided sofa 10 which includes two sofa 10f and 10s. This sofa is consisted of the movable seat bottom 11, two similar and mutual armrests 12 and 13, two backrests 14f and 14s and two similar motion systems 15 and 16 which are placed in two armrests 12 and 13 respectively. The seat bottom 11 includes two seating platforms 11f and 11s, two movable joists 112a and 112b and four similar caps 113a, 113b, 113c and 113d which are connected to the two ends of joists. There are two same grooves 114a and 114c on the surface 124 of the armrest 12 and two grooves 114b and 114d on the surface 134 of the armrest 13 for passing the movable joists 112a and 112b. The motion system 16 can be seen by removing the surface 135 of the armrest 13 (as shown in FIG. 1E). The motion system 15 can be seen by removing the surfaces 121, 123, 124 and 125 of the armrest 12 (as shown in FIG. 1C). This motion system includes a pneumatic gas spring 150 which includes a cylinder 151, the piston 152 and a release pin projection 153 itself. The piston 152 is connected to the upper surface 121 of the armrest 12 by the conical flange connector 154a (see FIGS. 1C and 1D). There's the valve 155 on the flange 154a. The cylinder 151 is also connected to the movable surface 159 by two conical flange connectors 154b and 154c and the bolts like 156. There are four same small pulleys 157a, 157b, 157c and 157d in four corners of the movable platform 159 which move on four grooved rails 158a, 158b, 158c and 158d by moving platform 159 to up and down. Four grooved rails which are placed on the surfaces 122 and 123. The release system 160 is consisted of the spring 161, the pivot 162, the shaft 163, the circular pivot 164, the control lever 166, and the brackets 165 and 167.
In further detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 1A to FIG. 1L the sofa 10f and 10s are under each other inversely in the form of the adjustable two-sided sofa. By the rotation of the control lever 166 around the pivot of the bracket 167 toward below, the shaft 163 rotates around the pivot 164 and releases the pin 153 to keep the piston in its maximum length and set the movable platform 159 in lowest position in the sofa 10f (as shown in FIG. 1D). The motion system 16 is connected to the motion system 15 by the joists 112a, 112b and after passing through the four similar grooves 114a, 114b, 114c and 114d. There are two caps on each joist. The caps 113a, 113b, 113c and 113d move along with the joists and prevent the grooves 114a-114d from being seen in the outward appearance. The release system in the armrest 13 is similar to the release system 160 which is controlling by the lever control 166 and the command is transferring to the armrest 13 by the pivot 162 which have passed through the backrest 14f. The sofa 10 is rotated to 180 degrees (see FIG. 1F) to form the sofa 10s but the seat bottom height is not adjusted and is upper than the ergonomic position (see FIG. 1G). At this situation the motion system position in the side view is similar to FIG. 1H. In this situation by using proportional force, for example a human weight force and contemporary rotation of the control lever 166, the pin 153 will be released and the piston 152 sinks into the cylinder 151 and in this position the seat bottom of the sofa moves down and gets stable (see FIGS. 1H-1J). With the help of this adjustment, the sofa 10s is ready to use in the ergonomic and standard position. For keeping the balance and increasing the safety factor in 3seater sofa (see FIGS. 1K and 1L) two pneumatic gas springs in each armrest can be used. Generally, different systems such as electromotor or linear gear systems and lockable systems also can be used to move the seat bottom.
In further detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 1A to FIG. 1L, the seat bottom 11 is sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 60 centimeters deep, about 55 to about 65 centimeters wide and about 25 to about 30 centimeters thickness. The distance between the seating platforms 11f and 11s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. The backrests 14f and 14s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 40 to 45 centimeters height and about 55 to about 65 centimeters wide or diameter. The displacement extent of the movable system is proportional to the seat bottom 11 thickness, about 25 to 30 centimeters. The armrests 12 and 13 are sufficiently wide and long to place the movable systems 15 and 16 in themselves, such as about 80 to 90 centimeters height, about 25 to about 30 centimeters wide or diameter and about 70 to 80 centimeters deep. Present sizes are set for 1 seater sofa and it increase proportionally for 2 or 3 seater sofa.
The construction details of the invention as shown in FIG. 1A to FIG. 1L are that the main frame of the adjustable two sided sofa 10 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. And also the surfaces of the backrests, armrests, the seat bottom and caps can be covered by cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. The contact surface of the armrests and the backrests with the floor should be covered with strong material and proportional with the color and patterns of the sofa. Using material in the making of the motion system also should be sufficiently rigid and strong such as high strength plastic, metal and the like. Further, the various components of the adjustable two sided sofa 10 can be made of different materials and also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating.
Referring now to the invention in more detail in FIG. 2A to FIG. 2Q there is shown transformative two sided sofa 20 which includes of two sofa 20s and 20f with a bed 28f. This sofa is consisted of the movable backrest 21f, the mutual seat bottom 22 and the legs 23 and 24. The legs 23 and 24 in the sofa 20f will form the armrests of the sofa 20s. There's the movable backrest 21s, related to the sofa 20s under the sofa 20f which is in fold-flat position (see FIG. 2B). The mutual seat bottom 22 comprises the seating platforms 22f and 22s. There are two covers 211f and 212f in the back of the backrest 21f which are connected to the back surface of the backrest by two connector zips 213f and 214f. We can see two folding legs 215f and 216f which are placed in the back of the backrest 21f and its inside space. The motion system of the backrest 21f is under the circular caps 251f and 261f in the side space of the seat bottom 22 and the backrest 21f And also the motion system of the backrest 21s is under the armrests 23 and 24, under the circular caps (not numbered) in the side space of the seat bottom 22 and the backrest 21s. All of the motion systems of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 can be the same and similar to the mechanism 25. The motion mechanism 25 could be a recliner mechanism as shown in FIG. 2Q or the replacing systems such as the manual simple lockable systems, accompanied with electromotor systems, pneumatic systems or any similar systems can be used. The control levers 27f and 27s also are respectively related to the releasing system of the motion system of the backrests 21f and 21s. The pivot 271s connects the control lever 27s to the releasing system of the motion system.
In more detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 2A to FIG. 2Q the sofa 20f and 20s are inversely under each other in the form of the transformative two-sided sofa 20. We separate the covers 211f and 212f of the backrest's 21f back by opening the zips 213f and 214f, and unfold the folding legs 215f and 216f. Then straighten the backrest 21f toward the shown direction in FIG. 2E (by using proportional force and contemporary rotation of the control lever 27f) to be at the same level with the seating platform 22f, and place the legs on the floor. Now the bed 28f is ready to use (as shown in FIG. 2F). The backrest 21f moves and changes to the fold-flat position by releasing the control lever 27f again (see FIGS. 2G and 2H), then we fold the folding legs 215f and 216f and attach the covers 211f and 212f to the backrest's 21f back by closing the zips 213f and 214f (see FIGS. 2I and 2J). Now the tow-sided sofa 20 is ready to transport (as shown in FIG. 2J). The whole sofa rotates to 180 degrees in the fold-flat position to set the sofa 20 in the opposite side of the first position and the backrest 21s stands at the top (see FIGS. 2K and 2L). Then by releasing the control lever 27s, the pivot 271s rotates and cause the backrest 21s to move toward (by using proportional force) the shown direction in FIG. 2M to stand in an upright position and form the sofa 20s (see FIG. 2O and compare it with FIG. 2A). Two of the four locations of the motion mechanisms of the transformative two sided sofa 20 are shown in FIG. 2P.
In further detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 2A to FIG. 2Q, the seating platforms 22f and 22s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 70 centimeters deep, about 180 to about 220 centimeters wide and the thickness of the seat bottom 22 is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The distance between the seating platforms 22f and 22s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. The backrests 21f and 21s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 65 centimeters height, about 180 to about 220 centimeters wide and about 20 centimeters thickness. Present sizes are considered for 3 seater sofa and decrease for 1 or 2 seater sofa proportionally.
The construction details of the invention as shown in FIG. 2A to FIG. 2Q are that the main frame of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. The surfaces of the backrests, armrests, seat bottoms and the circular caps can be covered by cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. Further, the various components of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 can be made of different materials. And also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating. The edges of the contact surface of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 with the floor at both sides should be covered with strong material and proportional with the color and pattern of the sofa.
Referring now to the invention in more detail in FIG. 3A to FIG. 3W there is shown three-sided sofa 30 which includes two 3 seater sofa 30f and 30s and a 6 seater sofa 30t with two beds 38f and 38s. The transformative three-sided sofa 30 is consisted of the backrests 31f and 31s respectively for the sofa 30f and 30s which work as the seat bottoms for the sofa 30t. The seat bottom 32 also is consisted of seating platforms 32f and 32s respectively for the sofa 30f and 30s which will form the mutual backrest for the sofa 30t. There are two covers 311f and 312f in the back of the backrest 31f which are connected to the back surface of the backrest by two connector zips 313f and 314f. We can see two folding legs 315f and 316f which are placed in the back of the backrest 31f and its inside space. The backrest 31s also is consisted of two covers 311s and 312s, two connector zips 313s and 314s and two folding legs 315s and 316s, as the backrest 31f. The motion system of the backrest 31f is under the circular caps 351f and 361f and in the side space of the seat bottom 32 and the backrest 31f and also the motion system of the backrest 31s is under the circular caps 351s and 361s and in the side space of the seat bottom 32 and the backrest 31s. All of the motion systems of the transformative three sided sofa 30 are similar to each other and similar to the mechanism 25 of the sofa 20 which was explained in the preceding section. The control levers 37f and 37s respectively are related to the release system of the backrests 31f and 31s.
In more detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 3A to FIG. 3W, the sofa 30f and 30s are under each other inversely in the form of the transformative three-sided sofa 30. Suppose the sofa 30f (see FIGS. 3B-3D), we separate the covers 311f and 312f of the backrest's 31f back by opening the zips 313f and 314f, and unfold the folding legs 315f and 316f. Then straighten the backrest 31f toward the shown direction in FIG. 3E (by using proportional force and contemporary rotation of the control lever 37f) to be at the same level with the seating platform 32f, and place the legs on the floor. Now the bed 38f is ready to use (as shown in FIG. 3F). The backrest 31f moves and changes to the fold-flat position by releasing the control lever 37f again (see FIGS. 3G and 3H), then we fold the folding legs 315f and 316f and attach the covers 311f and 312f to the backrest's 31f back by closing the zips 313f and 314f (see FIGS. 3I and 3J). Now the transformative three-sided sofa 30 is ready to transport (as shown in FIG. 3J). In this position we rotate the whole sofa in fold-flat position to 180 degrees to set the transformative three-sided sofa 30 in the inverse position and place the backrest 31s on the top (see FIGS. 3K-3M). Then the backrest 31s is moved toward the shown direction in FIG. 3N (by releasing the control lever 37s) to be in an upright position and form the sofa 30s with different color, shape and etc. from the sofa 30f (see FIG. 30 and compare it with FIG. 3A). We separate the covers 311s and 312s from the backrest's 31s back by opening the zips 313s and 314s, and unfold the folding legs 315s and 316s (as shown in FIG. 3Q). Then straighten the backrest 31s toward the shown direction in FIG. 3R (by using proportional force and contemporary rotation of the control lever 37s) to be at the same level with the seating platform 32s and place the legs on the floor. Now the bed 38s is ready to use (see FIG. 3S) with different shape and color from the bed 38f. Again we rotate the transformative three sided sofa 30 in fold-flat position to 90 degrees (as shown position in FIG. 3L). Then separate four covers 311f, 312f, 311s and 312s from the backrests 31f and 31s, unfold four folding legs 315f, 316f, 315s and 316s and the release two control levers 37f and 37s to place the legs on the floor (see FIGS. 3T-3V). Now the sofa 30t is ready to use (as shown in FIG. 3W) with double capacity compared with a common sofa (for example, 6seater instead of 3seater).
In further detail, still referring to the invention of FIG. 3A to FIG. 3W, the seating platforms 32s and 32f are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 55 to 65 centimeters deep, about 200 to about 220 centimeters wide and the thickness of the seat bottom 32 is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The distance between the seating platforms 32f and 32s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. The backrests 31f and 31s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 55 to 65 centimeters height, about 200 to about 220 centimeters wide and about 20 centimeters thickness. The vertical height of the folding legs 315f, 316f, 315s and 316s is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The present sizes are for 3seater transformative three-sided sofa 30 and it decrease proportionally for 1 or 2seater sofa.
The construction details of the invention as shown in FIG. 3A to FIG. 3W are that the main frame of transformative three-sided sofa 30 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. The surfaces of the backrests, seat bottoms and circular caps can be covered by the cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. Further, the various components of the transformative three-sided sofa 30 can be made of different materials. And also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating. The edges of contact surface of the transformative three-sided sofa 30 with the floor can be covered by strong material and proportional with the color and pattern of the sofa at the both sides.
The sizes of the entire described sofa are measured in ergonomic and standard scale. All of the present figures are presented as example and any designs with different shape can be replaced by the used designs in the mentioned adjustable and transformative two and three-sided sofa.
The advantages of the present invention, without limitation, are to have two sofas with different shape, color, model etc. and suitable for different tastes and the life environment of the end user into one sofa. And the diversity would be resulting just by a 180 or 90 degrees rotation in a short time. The life time of this kind of furniture is longer due to the use of both sides instead of constant use of one side. Further different designs with various shapes can be made by three mentioned methods. And also the sofas 20 and 30 are more easy and safe to transport compared with common sofa due to the folding feature of the backrests of both sides. And the transformative three sided sofa 30 has the capability to increase the capacity (for example 3 to 6seater) and also can be used as the bed with two different patterns, colors and etc.
While the foregoing written description of the invention enables one of ordinary skill to make and use what is considered presently to be the best mode thereof, those of ordinary skill will understand and appreciate the existence of variations, combinations, and equivalents of the specific embodiment, method, and examples herein. The invention should therefore not be limited by the above described embodiment, method, and examples, but by all embodiments and methods within the scope and spirit of the invention.
