Abstract

The invention is directed to a full body coat, covering the body down to the wrists and ankles, but easily separable into a hooded jacket and a pair of pants. The jacket and pants are joined at the waist by a removable zipper, with the lower edge of the jacket overlapping the zipper to prevent heat loss. The wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs are both elastic and adjustable, to accommodate footwear and gloves of any size and thickness. The combined garment is water resistant, and designed to accommodate the most active user, with a full range of motion at the shoulders, hips, waist, elbows, and knees.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The invention relates generally to severe weather outerwear, and in particular to a full body coat. Recently, the northern half of the United States was exposed for several days to a weather phenomenon known as a polar vortex, with wind chill factors as low as −48 F. In Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, and Siberia, people are more accustomed to such conditions; but this weather pattern reached as far south as St. Louis and Memphis. Thus the demand for severe winter weather gear has increased. The need is particularly acute for people who must work outdoors regardless of the weather, such as utility repairmen, tow truck drivers, and police officers, and people who enjoy winter sports outdoors, such as snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling. Various types of outerwear have been developed through the years, but each has proven less than satisfactory in its own way. A full body coat, covering the body down to the wrists and ankles, but easily separable into a hooded jacket and a pair of pants, would resolve this problem.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Accordingly, the invention is directed to a full body coat, covering the body down to the wrists and ankles, but easily separable into a hooded jacket and a pair of pants. The jacket and pants are joined at the waist by a removable zipper, with the lower edge of the jacket overlapping the zipper to prevent heat loss. The wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs are both elastic and adjustable, to accommodate footwear and gloves of any size and thickness. The combined garment is water resistant, and designed to accommodate the most active user, with a full range of motion at the shoulders, hips, waist, elbows, and knees.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring now to the invention in more detail, the invention is directed to a full body coat, covering the body down to the wrists and ankles, but easily separable into a hooded jacket 10 and a pair of pants 14. The jacket 10 and pants 14 are joined at the waist by a removable zipper, with the lower edge 10A of the jacket 10 overlapping the zipper to prevent heat loss. The wrist cuffs 12 and ankle cuffs 15 are both elastic and adjustable, to accommodate footwear and gloves of any size and thickness. The combined garment is water resistant, and designed to accommodate the most active user, with a full range of motion at the shoulders, hips, waist, elbows, and knees.

The first exemplary embodiment is directed to use by persons who must be, or choose to be outdoors in the worst winter weather, and must remain fully active with a full range of motion at all joints. The combined garment is intended for wear with gloves and boots. The jacket 10 features a hood 11 with a drawstring. When the combined garment is worn properly with gloves, boots, and a facemask which covers the nose, and the drawstring of the hood 11 is drawn tight, over 99 percent of the total surface area of the body is covered.

As is customary with heavy winter jackets, the front zipper closure of the jacket 10 is concealed by a flap which is secured by buttons, snaps, hook-and-loop fasteners, or similar closures to prevent heat loss. The elbows 20, knees 21, and seat area 22 of the combined garment may be reinforced by fully waterproof patches made from heavy-duty fabric, leather, or a similar material, and both the jacket 10 and pants 14 may also feature removable, washable fabric liners for greater heat retention.

The jacket pockets 13 and the pants pockets 16 are large and roomy, with elastic upper edges and heavy-duty linings, to accommodate hands wearing two pairs of insulated gloves. The upper edges preferably also feature closures such as snaps or hook-and-loop fasteners. The pockets are also intended to accommodate objects of significant size which the user may wish to carry in a pocket, such as a lady's handbag, a police officer's sidearm, or various hand tools. The outer seam of the pants 14, along the thigh, may also feature a long pocket to accommodate a large flashlight or insulated bottle. The wrist cuffs 12 and ankle cuffs 15 are elastic, and are also expandable with snaps or hook-and-loopd fasteners, to accommodate large, heavy gloves and boots. The ankle cuffs 15 may feature heavy-duty straps extending across the soles of the user's boots, to secure the ankle cuffs 15 and prevent the pants 14 from riding up on the user's legs.

To use the first exemplary embodiment, the user may separate the jacket 10 and the pants 14, or join them together into a combined garment, using the removable zipper. The user may then wear the combined garment or its separate components, preferably with the wrist cuffs 12 outside the gloves, and the ankle cuffs 15 outside the boots.

The jacket 10 and pants 14 are preferably manufactured from a flexible, durable fabric which is water resistant, such as nylon, with box construction to secure insulation material and prevent shifting. The insulating material is preferably goose down. The wrist cuffs 12, ankle cuffs 15, and upper edges of the jacket pockets 13 and the pants pockets 16 are preferably manufactured from a flexible, durable fabric with elastic properties, such as elasticized cotton. Components, component sizes, and materials listed above are preferable, but artisans will recognize that alternate components and materials could be selected without altering the scope of the invention.

While the foregoing written description of the invention enables one of ordinary skill to make and use what is presently considered to be the best mode thereof, those of ordinary skill in the art will understand and appreciate the existence of variations, combinations, and equivalents of the specific embodiment, method, and examples herein. The invention should, therefore, not be limited by the above described embodiment, method, and examples, but by all embodiments and methods within the scope and spirit of the invention.

Claims

1. A full body coat, comprising:

(a) a jacket;

(b) said jacket having a lower edge, a hood, elbows, jacket pockets, and wrist cuffs;

(c) a pair of pants;

(d) said pants having an upper edge, knees, seat area, pants pockets, an outer seam, and ankle cuffs;

(e) said hood being affixed to a neckline of said jacket;

(f) said jacket and said pants being seperably joined at said lower edge and said upper edge via a zipper; and

(g) said upper section overlapping said zipper.

2. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said wrist cuffs and said ankle cuffs are elastic.

3. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said wrist cuffs and said ankle cuffs are adjustable and configured to tighten around a user's wrists, ankles, gloves or boots.

4. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said jacket, said pants, said wrist cuffs, and said ankle cuffs are water resistant.

5. The full body coat of claim 2, wherein said jacket, said pants, said wrist cuffs, and said ankle cuffs are water resistant.

6. The full body coat of claim 3, wherein said jacket, said pants, said wrist cuffs, and said ankle cuffs are water resistant.

7. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said hood further comprises a drawstring.

8. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said jacket further comprises a front zipper;

said front zipper being concealed by a front flap; said front flap being closable over said front zipper by a plurality of fasteners.

9. The full body coat of claim 8, wherein said plurality of fasteners are either buttons, snaps, or hook-and-loop fasteners.

10. The full body coat of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of patches; said patches being affixed to said elbow, knee, and seat area; said plurality of patches being made of heavy duty water proof fabric.

11. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said pants and jacket further comprise a removable washable fabric liner.

12. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said pants pockets and jacket pockets are configured to fit a user's hands wearing gloves; said pants pockets and jacket pockets further comprising heavy duty lining; said pants pockets and jacket pockets are closable by a fastener; said fastener being buttons, snaps, or hook-and-loop fasteners.

13. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said outer seam further comprises an elongated pocket.

14. The full body coat of claim 1, wherein said ankle cuffs further comprise foot straps; said foot straps being affixed to said ankle cuff; said foot straps being configured to wrap around a user's foot to secure said ankle cuffs around a user's ankle.
