Roof Vent with Filter

A roof vent has a vent base and a cover. The vent base has an annular main body that extends from an inner perimeter to an outer perimeter. An inside baffle extends upwardly from the vent base. The cover is mounted to cover the opening and the inside baffle, and includes an outside baffle that extends downwardly from the cover, spaced a distance from the inside baffle to form a filter receiving space. A skirt extends downwardly from an edge of the cover towards the vent base. A plurality of upper pegs and a plurality of lower pegs extend downwardly into the filter receiving space. A filter is positioned in the filter receiving space, where it is penetrated by and held in place by the upper and lower pegs.

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application for a utility patent claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63/221,884, filed Jul. 14, 2021.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention

This invention relates to roof vents, and more particularly to a roof vent that contains and secures a filter therein.

Description of Related Art

Roof vents are well known in the art. For example, Polston, U.S. Pat. No. 10,415,252, teaches an attic vent that includes a base component and a dome shaped cover. However, the prior art does not teach a roof vent that includes a filter secured between baffles and secured with pegs, such as is shown and claimed in the present application.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention teaches certain benefits in construction and use which give rise to the objectives described below.

The present invention provides a roof vent comprising a vent base having an annular main body that extends from an inner perimeter to an outer perimeter, the inner perimeter defining an opening through which air may flow. An inside baffle extends upwardly from the vent base, from or adjacent the inner perimeter. A cover is mounted to cover the opening and the inside baffle. The cover has an outside baffle that extends downwardly from the cover, spaced a distance from the inside baffle to form a filter receiving space. A skirt extends downwardly from an edge of the cover towards the vent base. A plurality of upper pegs and a plurality of lower pegs extend downwardly into the filter receiving space. A filter is positioned in the filter receiving space, where it is penetrated by and held in place by the upper and lower pegs.

Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following more detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, by way of example, the principles of the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

FIG. 1 is a side elevational sectional view of a roof vent 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1, the roof vent 10 that includes a filter 40. The roof vent 10 includes a vent base 20, which in this embodiment is generally planar and adapted to abut a roof during installation. In this embodiment, the vent base 20 is generally annular in construction, and includes an inner perimeter 22 and an outer perimeter 26. The inner perimeter 22 which defines an opening 24, through which air may flow to ventilate the structure. An inside baffle 28 extends upwardly from the vent base 20, in this embodiment in the form of a wall that extends upwardly from the inner perimeter 22, or from adjacent thereto.

A cover 30 is mounted over the vent base 20 for covering the opening 24. The cover 30 in this embodiment is generally planar, although it may be in the form of a dome, or any other shapes that provide the required protective covering may be used. The cover 30 is sized and shaped to extend over the opening 24 formed in the vent base 20, and over the inside baffle 28. The cover 30 includes an outside baffle 32 that extends downwardly from a main body 31 of the cover 30, spaced a distance D rom the inside baffle 28. The distance D is approximately equal to a thickness of the filter 40. In this embodiment, the inside and outside baffles 28 and 32 are on planes that are generally parallel in cross section, and form a filter receiving space 42 therebetween.

In this embodiment, the cover 30 extends to an edge 36, and further includes a skirt 38 that extends downwardly towards the vent base 20. In this embodiment, the skirt 38 extends downwardly a length T1 that is slightly less than a second length T2 between the cover 30 and the vent base 20. The differences between these lengths T1 and T2 are small enough to exclude water, but also allow for sufficient airflow to the opening 24 for adequate ventilation of a structure.

The cover 30 includes a plurality of upper pegs 34 which extend downwardly, and the vent base 20 includes of a plurality of lower pegs 36 which extends upwardly into the filter receiving space 42. The lower pegs 36 are positioned between the inside baffle 28 and the outer perimeter 26, so that they extend into the filter receiving space 42. The upper pegs 34 are positioned inside of and adjacent the outside baffle 32, so that they also extend into the filter receiving space 42. The upper pegs 34 and the lower pegs 36 extend into the filter 40 from opposite ends, thereby locking the filter 40 in place. For purposes of this application, the term “pegs” is defined broadly to include any form of post, nail, screw, or similar engaging element that extends from the vent 10 to engage the filter 40, as described herein.

As discussed above, the filter 40 may be inserted into the filter receiving space, where it is penetrated by and held in place by the pegs 34 and 36. The filter 40 of this embodiment may be a non-absorbent material, such as a polyester based filter material, but in alternative embodiments it may be any form of filter known in the art. As used in this application, the words “a,” “an,” and “one” are defined to include one or more of the referenced item unless specifically stated otherwise. The term “plurality” includes more than one. Also, the terms “have,” “include,” “contain,” and similar terms are defined to mean “comprising” unless specifically stated otherwise. Furthermore, the terminology used in the specification provided above is hereby defined to include similar and/or equivalent terms, and/or alternative embodiments that would be considered obvious to one skilled in the art given the teachings of the present patent application.

Claims

1. A roof vent comprising:

a vent base having an annular main body that extends from an inner perimeter to an outer perimeter, the inner perimeter defining an opening through which air may flow;
an inside baffle extending upwardly from the vent base, from or adjacent the inner perimeter;
a cover mounted to cover the opening and the inside baffle, the cover having an outside baffle that extends downwardly from the cover, spaced a distance from the inside baffle to form a filter receiving space;
a skirt extending downwardly from an edge of the cover towards the vent base;
a plurality of upper pegs that extend downwardly into the filter receiving space;
a plurality of lower pegs that extend upwardly from the vent base between the inside baffle and the outer perimeter, into the filter receiving space; and
a filter positioned in the filter receiving space, where it is penetrated by and held in place by the upper and lower pegs.
