Weighted articles of apparel having an adjustable fit and methods of manufacturing the same. In aspects, upper body, lower body, or full or substantially full body weighted article of apparel having an adjustable fit are provided. Fit-adjusting features or mechanisms can be incorporated into the weighted articles of apparel to allow a fit, tightness, or constriction of a wearable portion and/or the weighted portions to be adjusted, thereby allowing weights to more directly transfer forces onto a wearer in desired areas. The fit-adjusting features can include zipper-mechanisms that can be secured or unsecured while still remaining connected by a connecting textile, e.g., such as a gusset.
This non-provisional patent application claims priority to co-pending U.S. provisional patent app. No. 63/587,657, filed on Oct. 3, 2023, and titled “Weighted Article of Apparel with Adjustable Fit and Method of Manufacturing the Same,” the contents of which is incorporated herein by reference in the entirety.
TECHNICAL FIELDThe field relates to weighted articles of apparel.
BACKGROUNDWeighted articles of apparel have a number of benefits. For example, weighted articles of apparel can be used to enhance physical output, or can be used to provide pressure at specific locations on a wearer for comfort, therapy, and/or rehabilitation. However, to provide these benefits, weighted articles of apparel and in particular their weighted components need to be positioned at particular locations on a wearer. This can at times be challenging given the tendency of weighted components to shift position due to gravity. Therefore, improvements in the adjustability and fit of weighted articles of apparel would be beneficial.
SUMMARYThis summary is intended to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description section of this disclosure. This summary is not intended to identify key or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used as an aid in isolation to determine the scope of the claimed subject matter.
In brief, and at a high level, this disclosure describes, among other things, weighted articles of apparel having an adjustable fit, components for the same, and methods of manufacturing weighted articles of apparel having an adjustable fit, among other things.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel with one or more components that allow for an adjustable fit is provided.
In aspects, an article of apparel can be weighted through incorporation of a plurality of weights, e.g., beads, blocks, or other pieces of material having a density (e.g., in kg/m3 or g/cm3) that is higher than that of other elements used to form the article of apparel, e.g., textiles, threads, cords, skins, films, insulation, embossings, and the like.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel can include one or more fit-adjusting mechanisms or features. Each fit-adjusting mechanism or feature can be used to adjust a size and/or tightness of the weighted article of apparel, e.g., at one or more locations or broadly, thereby allowing weights incorporated into the article of apparel to impart associated gravitational forces at desired locations on a wearer.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel includes one or more zipper-mechanisms for adjusting a fit of the weighted article of apparel. Each zipper-mechanism can be used to secure opposite edges of a wearable portion together, e.g., through shifting the zipper-mechanism from an open configuration to a closed configuration, or partially closed configuration. For example, in aspects, a zipper-mechanism can be secured to thereby provide a first fit for a weighted article of apparel, and can be unsecured to thereby provide a second fit for the weighted article of apparel, where the second fit is looser than the first fit.
In aspects, a connecting textile, e.g., that is formed of one or multiple pieces of material, can be coupled between edges of a wearable portion that are secured by a zipper-mechanism, such that when the zipper-mechanism is in the open configuration, the connecting textile is extended/expanded to facilitate a looser fit of the weighted article of apparel, and when the zipper-mechanism is in the closed configuration, the connecting textile is compacted/contracted, facilitating a tighter fit of the weighted article of apparel. The connecting textile can have different shapes, sizes, and constructions according to aspects herein. In aspects, the connecting textile can be a gusset, e.g., one having a triangular shape or a quadrilateral shape, incorporated to provide additional reinforcement. In some aspects, a gusset can be incorporated so that it extends from an edge of an article of apparel, e.g., adjacent a waist area, along opposite sides of a zipper-mechanism, and to an end point, e.g., located on an arm, sleeve, or cuff of the article of apparel.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is an upper body article of apparel.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is a lower body article of apparel.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is a full or substantially full body article of apparel.
In some aspects, a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is an article of apparel. In one example, optionally, the weighted article of apparel with the adjustable fit includes a hood.
In aspects, a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is a hooded article of apparel (e.g., a hooded sweatshirt, a hooded pullover, a hooded anorak, a hooded jacket, a hooded blanket, or another hooded upper body covering).
In aspects, a method of manufacturing a weighted article of apparel with an adjustable fit is provided. In aspects, the method of manufacturing includes integrating weights into one or more textiles and/or article portions; assembling the one or more textiles and/or article portions together into a wearable portion; and incorporating at least one fit-adjusting mechanism, e.g., a zipper-mechanism, into the wearable portion that can be used to adjust a fit of the weighted article of apparel.
The weighted articles of apparel and methods of manufacturing the same disclosed herein can provide numerous benefits. For example, aspects herein allow a weighted article of apparel to be used more adaptively for relaxation, comfort, therapy, rehabilitation, and/or to enhance exercise. The aspects herein also allow for greater precision in the placement of weighted elements in a weighted article of apparel. The aspects herein also allow a weighted article of apparel to be more easily adjusted to have a desired fit and thereby produce a desired sensory experience in a wearer. The aspects herein also allow a weighted article of apparel to be adjusted for use by wearers of different sizes, shapes, and needs. This enables greater adaptability, use opportunities, and secondary uses, thereby increasing sustainability, among other benefits.
The weighted articles of apparel having an adjustable fit and methods of manufacturing the same herein are discussed in detail in connection with the attached drawing figures, which illustrate non-limiting aspects, wherein:
This detailed description is provided in order to meet statutory requirements. However, this description is not intended to limit the scope of this disclosure. Rather, the claimed subject matter may be embodied in different ways, to include different steps, different combinations of steps, different elements, and/or different combinations of elements, similar to those described in this disclosure, and in conjunction with other present or future technologies, solutions, or configurations. In addition, although the terms “step” and “block” may be used herein to identify different elements of methods employed, the terms should not be interpreted as implying any particular order among or between different elements except when the order is explicitly stated.
In general, weighted articles of apparel having an adjustable fit and methods of manufacturing the same are disclosed herein. In aspects, a weighted article of apparel can include a wearable portion, weights positioned in internal compartments of the wearable portion, and one or more fit-adjusting mechanisms that allow a fit, size, shape, tightness, compression, and/or restriction of the article of apparel to be adjusted thereby allowing a position and force of the weights positioned in the internal compartments to be at least partially controlled or adjusted. In aspects, the weighted articles of apparel can be upper body articles of apparel, lower body articles of apparel, or full or substantially full body articles of apparel, among other things. The fit-adjusting mechanisms incorporated into the weighted articles of apparel described herein can include zipper-mechanisms (e.g., single pull or double pull zipper-mechanisms), cinching-mechanisms, lacing systems, and the like. Examples of the aforementioned articles, components for the same, and methods of manufacturing the same are described in detail in subsequent sections in connection with attached

The component 10, and in particular the wearable portion 12 thereof, is weighted. Or, stated differently, the wearable portion 12 has material(s) incorporated therein to specifically increase the weight of the wearable portion 12 in certain areas, so that a wearer can experience forces from the added weight due to gravity during wear of the associated article of apparel. In
p=m/v.
In aspects, weights incorporated into an article, e.g., such as the weights 24, can be beads or blocks, e.g., that are formed of glass, ceramic, metal, stone, rock, wood, or any combination thereof, or another material. In aspects, the compartments (e.g., pockets) that hold the weights may have internal structures that help maintain the weights in desired positions therein. For example, in aspects, the position of weights in a compartment can be at least partially maintained through incorporation of interior batting, e.g., interior batting 25 as shown in
In aspects, the interior batting is provided by having elongated and entangled strands of material, e.g., fibers, yarns, or filaments formed of polyester, nylon, or fiberglass, extending through a compartment.
In one non-limiting example, the interior batting 25 may comprise one or more webs of fibers. Each of the one or more webs of fibers include a plurality of fibers, where the plurality of fibers may include natural fibers (e.g., silk, wool, cashmere, vicuna, cotton, flax, hemp, jute, sisal), man-made fibers from regenerated natural polymers (e.g., rayon, lyocell, acetate, triacetate, rubber, and poly(lactic acid)), synthetic fibers, or any combination of natural, man-made, and synthetic fibers (that is, fibers formed from synthetic polymers). In one example, synthetic fibers may include one or more of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) commonly known as polyester, nylon. The PET fibers may include virgin PET fibers (fibers that have not been recycled), and recycled PET fibers. Recycled PET fibers include shredded PET fibers derived from shredded articles and re-extruded PET fibers (fibers that are re-extruded using recycled PET chips). While PET is described as an example, other synthetic fibers such as fibers made from polyolefins (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene), aromatic polyamides (e.g., an aramid polymer such as para-aramid fibers and meta-aramid fibers), aromatic polyimides, polyamides, polyurethanes, and copolymers such as polyether-polyurea copolymers, polyester-polyurethanes, polyether block amide copolymers, or the like may be used in the one or more entangled webs.
Interior batting can be used to provide mini-pockets within a compartment to help suspend or hold weights at desired locations. This can help limit the tendency for such weights to simply shift to the bottom of a pocket due to gravitational forces. In aspects, the internal compartments can be triangular, circular, square, rectangular, or another shape, and/or can be symmetrical in shape, or asymmetrical in shape.
In aspects, a layering approach can be used to form a wearable portion of a weighted article of apparel. For example, in aspects, the following configuration can be used. The wearable portion can include a first textile layer, e.g., one that forms an outer layer of the wearable portion. The wearable portion can further include a second textile layer, e.g., one that forms an inner layer of the wearable portion. The textile layers can be knitted, woven, non-woven, fleece, or can be polymer-based (e.g., sheets or skins of polymer material), or another material, or some combination thereof. The wearable portion can further include one or more layers of batting incorporated between the first textile layer and the second textile layer for at least partially supporting, containing, and/or maintaining a position of weights incorporated between the first and second textile layers. In aspects, the batting can be formed of entangled fibers that create a plurality of mini-enclosures (e.g., mini-pockets) therein for supporting the weights. In aspects, the first and second textile layers can be formed, or modified, so that a plurality of internal compartments (e.g., pockets) are formed between the first and second textile layers, with the batting extending through the internal compartments.
Internal compartments of a weighted article of apparel can be formed using different types of constructions. For example, in aspects, textile layers of a wearable portion can be laminated together at one or more locations to at least partially form and delineate internal compartments. In aspects, baffles can extend between textile layers of a wearable portion to at least partially form and delineate internal compartments. The baffles may have different shapes. For example, triangular, quadrilateral, rectangular, etc. In aspects, textile layers of a wearable portion can be stitched, sewn, welded, and/or bonded together at one or more locations to at least partially form and delineate internal compartments. In addition, combinations of the aforementioned constructions can be used.
In some aspects, an outer textile layer of an article of apparel can include a durable water repellant (“DWR”) coating or treatment to help facilitate water-resistance.
In aspects, a wearable portion may include a plurality of internal compartments for holding weights. Further, in such aspects, each compartment can include one weight therein (e.g., with the pocket sized to enclose and contain the weight); or in aspects, each compartment can include a plurality of weights therein (e.g., enclosed and contained by integrated batting).
In some aspects, there may be one or more compartments that do not contain any weight and/or do not contain integrated batting.
In some aspects, a pocket structure (e.g., an external pocket for holding or storing one or more small items) of the weighted article of apparel may include a portion of the textile with one or more compartments that do not have the plurality of weights. For example, an outer pocket 53 may be positioned on an exterior surface of the wearable portion 30, as shown in
As an example, the pocket structure may include the first textile layer, the second textile layer, and one or more battings, and may not include any weights, while at least a front torso portion and/or a back torso portion of the weighted article of apparel may include the plurality of internal compartments with batting and weights as discussed above.
As another example, the pocket structure may include the first textile layer and the second textile layer, and may not include the one or more battings and weights.
In some examples, the plurality of weights may be included in the torso portion, including a front torso portion and a back torso portion, while the remaining garment portions (e.g., the arms, the pockets, and the hood portion) may either have less amount of weights compared to the torso portion or the plurality of weights may be absent from the remaining garment portions.
In aspects, a particular amount of weight can be used in the weighted articles of apparel described herein. For example, in aspects, each internal compartment (e.g., pocket) of a wearable portion can include between about 0.005-1.5 kilograms of weight(s). In aspects, a wearable portion may include between about 0.25-5 kilograms of weights on each of a front side and a back side of the article of apparel. In other aspects, a wearable portion (including the front torso portion and the back torso portion) may include between about 0.5-2 kilograms of weights in total across all of the internal compartments.
In aspects, internal compartments with weight(s) can be positioned at desired locations on an article of apparel to help facilitate desired sensory effects in those locations. In other words, internal compartments with weight(s) can be located zonally on an article of apparel to produce desired sensory effects at particular zones of a wearer's body. For example, in an upper body article of apparel, internal compartments with weight(s) can be concentrated in the lower back, mid-back, upper back, shoulders, neck, arms, chest, or any combination thereof. In aspects, the connecting textile 23 can be attached proximate to the edges 16, 18, e.g., being attached on an inner surface of the wearable portion 12, e.g., directly adjacent to the edges 16, 18 or in spaced-relation with the edges 16, 18 (e.g., between about 1-10 centimeters therefrom, in aspects). The connecting textile 23 can also be at least partially integrally formed with the wearable portion 12, e.g., such that one or more textiles of the wearable portion 12 and the connecting textile 23 are integrally co-extensive.

Incorporated between each zipper-mechanism 34, 36 is a corresponding connecting textile 35, 37. In aspects, the connecting textiles 35, 37 can be gussets. In aspects, the connecting textiles 35, 37 can be attached to an inner surface 45 of the wearable portion 30 so as to generally extend between the opposite sides of their corresponding zipper-mechanism 34, 36. The connecting textiles 35, 37 essentially bridge or interconnect the opposite sides 40a, 40b and 44a, 44b of the zipper-mechanisms 34, 36 and thus limit their possible distance of displacement. More specifically, in an unsecured state, e.g., as shown in
In aspects, each of the connecting textiles 35, 37 may have a first weight per unit area (e.g., grams per square meter) and the wearable portion 30 may have a second weight per unit area. In some aspects, the first weight per unit area is less than the second weight per unit area.
In aspects, connecting textiles as described herein can be formed of knitted materials, woven materials, non-woven materials, polymer materials, fleece, or some combination thereof. The connecting textiles described herein can also be constructed to have desired characteristics and/or material properties. For example, in aspects, connecting textiles can be formed to have substantially no stretch characteristics, e.g., through being constructed with non-elastic textiles and fabrics; can be formed to have stretch characteristics, e.g., through being constructed with elastic textiles or fabrics; or can be formed to have a combination of stretch and non-stretch characteristics. In some aspects, connecting textiles can be formed of materials that can stretch between about 1.1 to 1.5 times their static distance in the direction of displacement as described in connection with

In addition, connecting textiles 82, 84 are attached between the sides 76a, 76b and 80a, 80b of the corresponding zipper-mechanisms 72, 74 to help limit displacement of the zipper-mechanisms 72, 74 in their open configuration, e.g., similar to that described in connection with
The zipper-mechanisms 72, 74 can be adjusted into an open, unsecured, uncoupled configuration that provides a looser fit, e.g., suitable for donning and doffing, or use by a larger wearer, e.g., as shown in
In aspects, the amount of weight inside the internal compartments of a weighted article of apparel can be the same or can be substantially the same, or it can differ between the internal compartments, e.g., such that there is a greater amount of weight inside compartments in certain areas, e.g., shoulders, back, neck, arms, and/or other areas, and a lower amount of weight or no weight inside compartments in other areas, e.g., torso, waist area, hood, and/or other areas. These are intended to be non-limiting examples, and any all variations, combinations, and exclusions are contemplated herein.
