ORIGIN OF INVENTIONThis invention relates to a new and distinct variety of shrub rose plant named ‘AUSwhirl’, which was originated from the cross-pollination of the two ‘unnamed’ and unpatented seedlings of Rosa hybrida.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe primary objective of this breeding was to produce a rose variety having a yellow bloom with a strong, unfading color, the petals of which are informal with a neat outer ring, and that has a strong fragrance that smells distinctly of lemon, and that also has a growth that is low and rounded with shiny foliage.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONAmong the features which distinguish the new variety from others presently available and commercial rose cultivars known to the inventor is the following combination of characteristics: blooms having an unfading, strong yellow color with an informal arrangement of petals within a neat outer ring of petals, and low rounded growth that has shiny foliage, and a strong lemon fragrance.
Asexual reproduction of the new variety by budding as performed at Bowling Green Lane in Albrighton, Britain shows that the foregoing and other distinguishing characteristics come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding asexual propagations. ‘AUSwhirl’ may be asexually propagated by budding. The budding successfully occurred on the plant/rootstock Rosa dumetorum ‘Laxa’ for the observed plants.
COMPARISON WITH PARENTSThe seed and pollen parents of ‘AUSwhirl’ are two unnamed seedlings. The new rose may be distinguished from its seed parent, by the following combination of characteristics: the seed parent is more disease prone with larger pink flowers. The new rose may be distinguished from its pollen parent, by the following combination of characteristics: the parent is a deeper shade of yellow, with larger flowers and is more disease-prone.
COMPARISON WITH THE CLOSEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CULTIVARThe closest commercially available cultivar to the new variety is the ‘AUSmol’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,524) and ‘AUSbaker’ (unpatented). The new rose may be distinguished from the ‘AUSmol’ and ‘AUSbaker’ varieties by the following combination of characteristics: the ‘AUSmol’ (110-120) and ‘AUSbaker’ (110) roses have more petals than ‘AUSwhirl’ (77). The arrangement of petals also differs, in ‘AUSwhirl’ the petal arrangement is informal whereas for ‘AUSmol’ it is a regular rosette formation and for ‘AUSbaker’ the blooms are quartered. Finally, ‘AUSwhirl’ forms a low, rounded shrub whereas ‘AUSmol’ is upright and short, and ‘AUSbaker’ is tall and will grow as a climber.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the new variety and shows the flowering thereof from bud to full bloom depicted in color as nearly correct as it is possible to make in a color illustration of the character. Throughout this specification, color references and/or values are based upon the Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001) except where common terms of color definition are employed.
Observations of budded ‘AUSwhirl’ specimens were made in Albrighton, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. The following description is of 1 year-old potted rose plants of the new variety grown in a garden environment in Albrighton, Britain in the month of June. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.
FLOWER CHARACTERISTICS
- Blooming habit: Recurrent. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.
- Bud:

- Size.—About 2.2 cm long and 1.8 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl.
- Form.—The bud form is pointed ovoid.
- Color.—When sepals first divide, the bud color is RHS 151B (yellow-green group) with RHS 45A (red group). When half blown, the upper sides of the petals are RHS 12A (yellow group), and the lower sides of the petals are RHS 12B (yellow group).
- Calyx.—Shape: star-shaped when the bloom is open and folds back against the stem. Length: 2.6 cm. Diameter: 1.3 cm.
- Sepals.—Arrangement: Regularly arranged. Color: Upper Surface: green RHS 147C (yellow-green group). Lower Surface: green RHS 146C (yellow-green group) with RHS 47A (red group). Length: 2.6 cm. Width: 1 cm. Shape: Lanceolate. Surface texture: Upper Surface: Downy. Lower Surface: Smooth. Number: There are 3 lightly appendaged sepals, and 2 unappendaged sepals with downy edges.
- Receptacles.—Color: RHS 144A (yellow-green group). Shape: funnel. Size: medium, about 1.2 cm high×1 cm wide. Surface: Smooth.
- Peduncle.—Length: medium, averaging about 10 cm. Surface: Glandular. Color: RHS 144A (yellow-green group) with RHS 47A (red group). Strength: Strong.
