Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Alstroemeria plant named ‘Zoe’, characterized by its compact and mounding plant habit; sturdy and strong plants; vigorous growth habit and moderate to rapid growth rate; freely branching habit; green and pale yellow green variegated leaves; light red-colored flowers with yellow-colored centers and dark-colored stripes; and good garden performance.

Cultivar denomination: ‘ZOE’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Alstroemeria plant, botanically known as Alstroemeria hybrida, typically grown as a container-type garden Alstroemeria and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Zoe’.

The new Alstroemeria plant is a naturally-occurring branch mutation of Alstroemeria hybrida ‘Tara’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 14,722. The new Alstroemeria plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor on a single plant within a population of plants of ‘Tara’ in a controlled greenhouse environment in Sussex, United Kingdom in 2014.

Asexual reproduction of the new Alstroemeria plant by in vitro rhizogenesis in a controlled greenhouse environment in Roelofarendsveen, The Netherlands since 2015 has shown that the unique features of this new Alstroemeria plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Alstroemeria have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Zoe’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Zoe’ as a new and distinct Alstroemeria plant:

• • 1. Compact and mounding plant habit.
  • 2. Sturdy and strong plants.
  • 3. Vigorous growth habit and moderate to rapid growth rate.
  • 4. Freely branching habit.
  • 5. Green and pale yellow green variegated leaves.
  • 6. Light red-colored flowers with yellow-colored centers and dark-colored stripes.
  • 7. Good garden performance.

Plants of the new Alstroemeria can be compared to plants of the mutation parent, ‘Tara’. Plants of the new Alstroemeria differ primarily from plants of ‘Tara’ in leaf color as plants of ‘Tara’ have non-variegated leaves. In addition, plants of the new Alstroemeria have narrower leaves than plants of ‘Tara’.

Plants of the new Alstroemeria can be compared to plants of the Alstroemeria hybrida ‘Davina’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,703. In side-by-side comparisons, The Netherlands, plants of the new Alstroemeria differ from plants of ‘Davina’ in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Alstroemeria have smaller flowers than plants of ‘Davina’.
  • 2. Plants of the new Alstroemeria and ‘Davina’ differ in flower color as plants of ‘Davina’ have salmon pink and yellow-colored flowers.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants of the new Alstroemeria grown during the spring in four-liter containers in a glass-covered greenhouse in Maasdijk, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial container-type Alstroemeria production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 18° C. and night temperatures averaged 8° C. Plants were 24 weeks old when the photographs were taken and 32 weeks old when the detailed description was taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

• Garden performance: Plants of the new Alstroemeria have been observed to have good garden performance and to tolerate wind, rain and temperatures ranging from about 1° C. to about 30° C.
