Abstract

A new and distinct Ivy Geranium plant named ‘Pacvint’, characterized by its mounding, upright to trailing and cascading plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; freely basal branching habit; medium green-colored leaves; early and freely flowering habit; red purple semi-double flowers that are held above and beyond the foliar plane on strong peduncles; and good high temperature tolerance.

Description

Botanical designation: Pelargonium peltatum.

Cultivar denomination: ‘PACVINT’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Ivy Geranium plant, botanically known as Pelargonium peltatum, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Pacvint’.

The new Ivy Geranium plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Dresden, Germany. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new uniform and early-flowering Ivy Geranium plants with numerous attractive flowers.

The new Ivy Geranium plant originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor of two unidentified proprietary selections of Pelargonium grandiflorum, not patented, during the summer of 2014. Seed was collected from a number of potential parent plants, combined and sown. The new Ivy Geranium plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated mass cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Dresden, Germany during the spring of 2015.

Asexual reproduction of the new Ivy Geranium plant by vegetative terminal cuttings in a controlled greenhouse environment in Dresden, Germany since December, 2015 has shown that the unique features of this new Ivy Geranium plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Ivy Geranium have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Pacvint’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Pacvint’ as a new and distinct Ivy Geranium plant:

• • 1. Mounding, upright to trailing and cascading plant habit.
  • 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
  • 3. Freely basal branching habit.
  • 4. Medium green-colored leaves.
  • 5. Early and freely flowering habit.
  • 6. Red purple semi-double flowers that are held above and beyond the foliar plane on strong peduncles.
  • 7. Good high temperature tolerance.

Plants of the new Ivy Geranium can be compared to plants of the Pelargonium peltatum ‘Pacpisyb’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 21,849. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Ivy Geranium differ from plants of ‘Pacpisyb’ in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Ivy Geranium are smaller than plants of ‘Pacpisyb’.
  • 2. Flowers and flower petals of plants of the new Ivy Geranium are larger than flowers and flower petals of plants of ‘Pacpisyb’.
  • 3. Flowers of plants of the new Ivy Geranium are darker red purple in color than flower of plants of ‘Pacpisyb’.
  • 4. Plants of the new Ivy Geranium have shorter peduncles than plants of ‘Pacpisyb’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new Ivy Geranium plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Ivy Geranium plant. The photograph comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Pacvint’ grown in a container.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photograph and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown in 19-cm containers during the spring, summer and autumn in a glass-covered greenhouse in Dresden, Germany and under cultural practices typical of commercial Ivy Geranium production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 18° C. to 20° C., night temperatures averaged 18° C. and light levels ranged from 15 klux to 100 klux. Plants were pinched two times and were nine months old when the photograph and the detailed description were taken. In the following detailed description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

• Temperature tolerance: Plants of the new Ivy Geranium have been observed to tolerate temperatures ranging from about 0.5° C. to about 40° C.
