Description

Botanical classification: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.

Varietal denomination: ‘JBG BH-03’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention comprises a new and distinct Hibiscus plant having the varietal name ‘JBG BH-03’. The new variety is the result of a planned breeding program with the purposes of developing Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants that exhibit whitefly and leaf spot resistance, propagation and production efficiencies, durable and exotic flowers, and abundant flowering. ‘JBG BH-03’ is the result of a cross conducted in Grand Saline, Tex. between Hibiscus rosa-sinensis varieties ‘JBG 13008’ (female parent, U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 17/803,120) and ‘JBG 15010’ (male parent, unpatented). The new variety was selected in January of 2016 in Grand Saline, Tex. and the first asexual reproduction of the new variety was conducted by semi-hardwood cuttings in June of 2016 in Grand Saline, Tex. ‘JBG BH-03’ has been trial and field tested and has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics and remain true to type through successive propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. However, it has been found to thrive in production and adapt well to the environment in Homestead, Fla. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.

‘JBG BH-03’ is similar to its female parent in flower size and flower color pattern. ‘JBG BH-03’ differs from its female parent in that the new variety exhibits overlapping petals, while the petals of its female parent are open and separated. ‘JBG BH-03’ is similar to its male parent in having orange flower petals with yellow pigmentation present. ‘JBG BH-03’ differs from its male parent in having a smaller and less pronounced flower eye.

When ‘JBG BH-03’ is compared to Hibiscus rosa-sinensis variety ‘Lanwabash’, having a commercial name of “Party Crasher” (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,530), both varieties have a main flower color of orange, an upright growth habit, and similar pest resistance. However, ‘JBG BH-03’ has less yellow pigmentation present on its petals, more vigorous growth, and less petal ruffling than ‘Lanwabash’.

The following traits distinguish ‘JBG BH-03’ as a new and distinct cultivar from other Hibiscus varieties known to the breeder:

    • 1. High growth rate;
    • 2. Flowers that point outwards instead of downwards or upright;
    • 3. Muted green foliage color; and
    • 4. Heavy branching with good vigor.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The accompanying photographic images illustrate the new variety at approximately three years of age, with the colors being as nearly true as is possible with color illustrations of this type:

FIG. 1 illustrates a close-up view of a flower of the new variety; and

FIG. 2 illustrates a close-up view of an entire plant of the new variety.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following detailed description sets forth the characteristics of the new variety. The plants were grown in a greenhouse with bottom heat in boxed, 1 yard soil containers. The color readings and measurements were taken indoors under natural light in a greenhouse on approximately three year old plants. Color references are primarily to the Munsell Color Chart (accessed online in 2022), except where general color terms are used.
