plant named ‘EC-PEPE-2302’
A new and distinct cultivar of Peperomia plant named ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ is disclosed, characterized by rounded-cordate leaves with a grey-green upper leaf surface color with dark purple veins and light green under surface color. Plants have a compact habit and veins are furrowed. The new variety is a Peperomia, typically used as an ornamental plant.
Latest Eden Collection B.V. Patents:
Latin name of the genus and species: Peperomia albovittata.
Variety denomination: ‘EC-PEPE-2302’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program to produce distinct and better performing Peperomia varieties. The new variety was selected as a seedling resulting from the crossing of the seed parent, Peperomia albovittata ‘1628’, and the pollen parent, Peperomia albovittata ‘1607’, two unpatented varieties from the inventor's breeding line. The crossing was made by the inventor, Obed J. Smit, a citizen of the Netherlands in 2018. ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ was selected by the inventor in 2019 at a commercial greenhouse in Sappemeer, the Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ was first performed by leaf cuttings in Sappemeer, the Netherlands at a commercial greenhouse in September of 2019, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type through successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘EC-PEPE-2302’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ as a new and distinct Peperomia cultivar:
-
- 1. Grey-Green upper leaf surface color with dark purple veins and light green under surface color.
- 2. Rounded cordate leaves.
- 3. Compact plant habit.
- 4. Furrowed veins.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ differ from ‘1628’ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Foliage color of the upper surface of ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ is grey-green with dark purple veins; upper surface color of the seed parent is dark green with brown veins.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are smaller than leaves of the seed parent variety.
- 3. Plants of the new variety are smaller and more compact than plants of the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ differ from ‘1607’ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Foliage color of the upper surface of ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ is grey-green with dark purple veins; upper surface color of the pollen parent is dark green with brown veins.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are smaller than leaves of the pollen parent variety.
- 3. Plants of the new variety are smaller and more compact than plants of the pollen parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ are similar to plants of the commercial variety Peperomia ‘EC-PEPE-1803’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 31,278. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaves of the new variety are larger (6.9 cm long, 6.0 cm wide) than leaves of this comparator (4.4 cm long, 3.7 cm wide).
- 2. Plants of the new variety are almost twice as wide (46.5 cm) as plants of this comparator (24.5 cm).
- 3. Dark vein coloration of the new variety is more closely held to the veins than the dark vein coloration of this comparator which bleeds farther into the leaf blade.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-PEPE-2302’ are similar to plants of Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 24,379. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaves of the new variety are light green on the lower surface; leaves of this comparator are red on the lower surface.
- 2. Plants of the new variety are larger than plants of this comparator.
- 3. Foliage of the new variety is more rounded than foliage of this comparator.
