plant named ‘EC-BEGO-2305’
A new and distinct cultivar of Begonia plant named ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ is disclosed, characterized by large dark green leaves with green-white dots. Plants have broad, spreading, semi-upright habits, and flower from spring to autumn. The new variety is a Begonia, typically used as an ornamental plant.
Latin name of the genus and species: Begonia maculata.
Variety denomination: ‘EC-BEGO-2305’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program to produce distinct and better performing Begonia varieties. The new variety was selected as a seedling resulting from the crossing made by the inventor, Obed J. Smit, a citizen of the Netherlands, in 2018. The seed parent is the unpatented Begonia maculata ‘180018’, a variety from the inventor's breeding line. The pollen parent is an unnamed, unpatented specimen of Begonia maculata. The new variety was selected by the inventor in 2018 at a commercial greenhouse in Sappemeer, the Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ by terminal cuttings was first performed in Sappemeer, the Netherlands at a commercial greenhouse in March 2021, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type through successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘EC-BEGO-2305’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ as a new and distinct Begonia cultivar:
-
- 1. Large leaves.
- 2. Large dots on leaves.
- 3. Very strong stems.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ are similar to plants of the female parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ differ from in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaves of the new variety have large dots, while leaves of the seed parent have small dots.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety have fewer dots than leaves of the seed parent.
- 3. Leaf underside of the new variety is colored greyed-red with a green margin, while leaf underside of the seed parent is green.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ are similar to plants of the male parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ differ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaves of the new variety are larger than leaves of the pollen parent.
- 2. Leaf underside of the new variety is colored greyed-red with a green margin, while leaf underside of the pollen parent is red.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ are similar to plants of the commercial variety Begonia ‘Double Dot’, unpatented. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaf color of the new variety is darker green than leaf color of this comparator.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety have large green-white dots, while leaves of this comparator have small white dots.
- 3. Leaves of the new variety have fewer dots than leaves of this comparator.
- 4. Leaf underside of the new variety is colored greyed-red with a green margin, while leaf underside of this comparator is green.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘EC-BEGO-2305’ are similar to plants of co-pending U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 18/387,372, ‘EC-BEGO-2304’. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Leaf color of the new variety is dark green with green-white dots, while the leaf color of this comparator is darker green with silvery-white dots.
- 2. Leaf underside of the new variety is colored greyed-red with a green margin, while leaf underside of this comparator is dark red.
- 3. Leaves of the new variety are slightly curved with a margin having shallow, irregular crenations in lower ⅔, entire upper ⅓, while leaves of this comparator are curved with a toothed rim.
- 4. Leaves of the new variety are larger than leaves of this comparator.
- 5. Leaves of the new variety are not glossy, while leaves of this comparator are glossy.
