Bedding rose plant named ‘MEISAXA’

A new and distinct variety of bedding rose plant, referred to by its cultivar name, ‘MEISAXA’, is described. The new plant variety forms in abundance on a nearly continuous basis, yellow-colored blossoms. The growth habit is bushy and compact. Dense, semi-glossy ornamental foliage is formed. Additionally, the new plant variety is particularly well suited for growing as ornamentation in the landscape.

Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Rosa hybrida.

Variety denomination: ‘MEISAXA’.

STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES BY THE INVENTOR

The first sale or offer for of the new plant variety was Apr. 26, 2025 and first sale of the plant variety was May 15, 2025, in Japan. The first offer for sale of the new plant variety was by the inventor or another who obtained the new plant variety directly or indirectly from the inventor. No plants of the new plant variety have been sold in this country or anywhere in the world, nor has any disclosure of the new plant been made, more than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application, and such sale or disclosure within one year was either derived directly or indirectly from the inventor.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new variety of bedding rose plant of the present invention was created by controlled breeding during May 2015, in Le Cannet de Maures, Var, France by artificial pollination wherein two parents were crossed which previously had been studied in the hope that they would contribute the desired characteristics. The female parent (i.e., the seed parent) of the new plant variety was the ‘KORgeleflo’ variety (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 21,467). The male parent (i.e., the pollen parent) of the new plant variety was an unnamed seedling (not patented) that was the product of the cross between an unnamed seedling variety (not patented) and the ‘HARkuly’ variety (not patented).

The parentage of the new plant variety can be summarized as follows:
‘KORgeleflo’ x (unnamed seedling x ‘HARkuly’)

The seeds resulting from the above pollination were sown and small plants were obtained which were physically and biologically different from each other. Selective study resulted in the identification of a single plant of the new variety.

The new plant variety has been found to undergo asexual propagation in Le Cannet de Maures, Var, France by a number of routes such as eye budding, softwood cuttings, semi-hardwood cuttings, and hardwood cuttings. Asexual propagation techniques in in Le Cannet de Maures, Var, France, such as eye budding, softwood cuttings, semi-hardwood cuttings, and hardwood cuttings, have shown that the characteristics of the new plant variety are homogeneous, stable, and strictly transmissible by such asexual propagation from one generation to another. Accordingly, the new plant variety undergoes asexual propagation in a true-to-type manner.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It was found that the new variety of bedding rose plant of the present invention possesses the following combination of characteristics:

    • (a) forming yellow-colored blossoms,
    • (b) providing double flowers, and
    • (c) exhibiting a bushy and compact habit.

The new plant variety well meets the needs of the horticultural industry. It can be grown to advantage as ornamentation in parks, gardens, public areas, and residential landscapes. Accordingly, it is particularly well suited for growing in the landscape.

The new plant variety can be readily distinguished from its ancestors. More specifically, the new plant variety displays darker yellow flowers compared to the flowers of the ‘KORgeleflo’ variety (i.e., the seed parent). Additionally, the new plant variety exhibits a bushy and compact growth habit compared to the more upright growth habit of the unnamed seedling male parent (i.e., the pollen parent). Moreover, the new plant variety can be readily distinguished from non-parental related similar varieties. For example, the new plant variety has flowers with more petals compared to the ‘SPRYLWKO’ variety (not patented).

The new plant variety has been named the ‘MEISAXA’ variety.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying photograph shows, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character, typical specimens of the plant parts of the new variety. The rose plants of the new variety were approximately three years of age and were observed during September while budded on its own roots and growing outdoors at Le Cannet des Maures, Var, France. Dimensions in centimeters are indicated at the bottom of the photograph.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The chart used in the identification of colors is that of The Royal Horticultural Society (The R.H.S. Colour Chart, 2015 edition). The terminology which precedes reference to the chart has been added to indicate the corresponding color in more common terms. The R.H.S. Colour Chart designation used herein represents the closest color observed on the majority of the specified botanical features. The description is based on a three-year-old specimen of the new plant variety, observed during September, while budded on its own roots and growing outdoors at Le Cannet des Maures, Var, France.

      • Hardiness.—Tested up to USDA Zones 5 to 9.

The new ‘MEISAXA’ variety has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotypic expression may vary somewhat with changes in light intensity and duration, cultural practices, and other environmental conditions.

1. A new and distinct variety of bedding rose plant named ‘MEISAXA’ characterized by the following combination of characteristics: substantially as herein shown and described.

(a) forming yellow-colored blossoms,
(b) providing double flowers, and
(c) exhibiting a bushy and compact habit;
