Botanical classification: Rudbeckia hirta.
Variety denomination: ‘RUDBKS772’.
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONSThis application claims priority to European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) Plant Breeder's Rights Application No. 2025/2206 filed on Oct. 20, 2025, under 35 U.S.C. 119(f), the entire contents of which is incorporated by reference herein. This application is co-pending with a U.S. Plant Patent Application filed for a plant derived from the same breeding program that is entitled Rudbeckia Plant Named ‘RUDBSU674’ (Co-pending U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 19/463,090).
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Rudbeckia hirta and will hereafter by referred to by its cultivar name, ‘RUDBKS772’. The new cultivar is an herbaceous perennial grown for use as a landscape plant.
‘RUDBKS772’ was selected in July of 2022 as a single unique plant by the Inventor from amongst seedlings in a trial field in Zuidwolde, Netherlands. The trial field had been planted with seed derived from open pollination of numerous unpatented and unnamed proprietary plants from the Inventor's breeding program. The collected seeds were pooled before sowing and therefore the parentage is unknown.
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished under the direction of the Inventor by tissue culture using meristematic tissue in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands in August of 2022. Asexual propagation by tissue culture has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘RUDBKS772’ as a unique cultivar of Rudbeckia.
-
- 1. ‘RUDBKS772’ exhibits a medium plant size.
- 2. ‘RUDBKS772’ exhibits an early blooming season.
- 3. ‘RUDBKS772’ exhibits inflorescences with multi-colored ray florets that are yellow with red towards the base.
‘RUDBKS772’ can be compared to the Rudbeckia cultivars ‘RUHT25’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,728) and ‘RUDHT53’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,727). ‘RUHT25’ is similar to ‘RUDBKS772’ in having multi-colored ray florets. ‘RUHT25’ differs from ‘RUDBKS772’ in having a taller plant height and a later blooming season. ‘RUDHT53’ is similar to ‘RUDBKS772’ in having an early blooming season and a similar growth habit. ‘RUDHT53’ differs from ‘RUDBKS772’ in having more inflorescences and ray florets that are solid yellow in color.
‘RUDBKS772’ can also be compared to the co-pending cultivar Rudbeckia ‘RUDBSU674’. ‘RUDBSU674’ differs from ‘RUDBKS772’ in having inflorescences with ray florets that are yellow from the tip to the mid-section and dark red from the mid-section to the base.
The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Rudbeckia. The photographs were taken of a 4-month-old plant of ‘RUDBKS772’ as grown outdoors in a 19-cm container in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANTThe following is a detailed description of 4-month-old plants of ‘RUDBKS772’ as grown outdoors in 19-cm containers in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with the 6th edition 2015 (2019 reprint) Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
