  • Patent number: 3980130
Abstract: A storage bin may be used in many ways during the year such as: storage of solar-produced heat during the winter; storage of cold during the summer obtained from nighttime cold-producing apparatus or solar cooling apparatus; storage of heat and cold simultaneously for variable autumn and springtime weather, storage of dryness to absorb excess moisture on hot humid days, and so on. The present invention includes a number of features regarding storage of "heat" and "cold" (technically, storage of heat at higher and lower temperature levels). One of the important features is use of the air conditioner compressor for its normal chilling, drying function during the hot summer, using it as a "heat pump" during variable autumn and spring weather to heat one bin while chilling another, and using it as an auxiliary heat source for long cloudy spells during the winter when solar energy is not adequate, thereby eliminating the furnace.

  • Patent number: 3980164
Abstract: The invention relates to a synchronizing unit wherein the resilient member interposed between the coupling ring and the synchromesh rings consists of a split cylindrical expansible sleeve fitted in a pre-stressed state in the central portion of the coupling ring, said sleeve having outflaring ends adjacent to each inner surface of the synchromesh rings, respectively, said synchromesh rings being in a manner known per se rigidly interconnected. The central portion of said sleeve comprises a groove having inclined marginal portions adapted to co-act with said coupling member, whereby in the neutral position of said coupling ring the friction cones of the synchronizer are not in mutual contact. This synchronizing unit is particularly suitable for change-speed mechanisms of motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 3980168
Abstract: In a coin selector, a coin moving in a nearly vertical path under the influence of gravity is first tested to determine whether it is made of a ferromagnetic or non-ferromagnetic, conductive material. If the coin is identified as one of ferromagnetic material, it is further identified by examining a function of one of the coin's dimensions and by timing the period necessary for it to travel through a solenoid. If the coin is identified as of a non-ferromagnetic, conductive material, it is further identified by examining a function of one of the coin's dimensions and timing the period necessary for it to travel through a linear motor which is arranged to decelerate such moving coins.

  • Patent number: 3980169
Abstract: A single element type carrier having type characters with different printing areas is impacted against a recording medium with different impact intensities substantially corresponding to the different printing areas to effect uniform printing. The type carrier is driven in a printing movement by a resiliently biased member which imparts an impacting force to the type carrier as the member moves along a path in response to the rotational movement of a cam. To control the impacting force imparted to the type carrier, one of a plurality of stop abutments is selectively positionable in the path of the resiliently biased member to control the length of movement along the path during which the member imparts an impacting force to the type carrier.

  • Patent number: 3980170
Abstract: A drive system is disclosed which is particularly suitable for use in the glass industry. The drive system is for a plurality of conveying mechanisms to support and to move a load which may be discrete glass objects or a strip or sheet of glass. An electrical line shaft is created by using a plurality of squirrel cage synchronous motors which are connected to drive the conveying mechanisms, whether they be transfer mechanisms for discrete objects or rolls for conveying the strip of glass. One or more electrical inverters supply power to the motors so that not only are the motors operated in synchronism but also in phase register. Thus where discrete glass objects are conveyed the phase register of the transfer mechanisms between glass machines prevents glass breakage, and where rolls are conveying a strip of float glass, the phase register prevents difference in phase rotation of the rolls which could mar the surface of the float glass.
