  • Patent number: RE29963
Abstract: Apparatus for reading a disc-shaped record carrier in which video and/or audio information is recorded in a preferably spiral track. This information is optically read by means of a beam of radiation which via a reflecting element transmits the information present in the scanned point of the record carrier to a read detector. The radial position of the scanning point is controlled by controlling the angular position of the reflecting element which for this purpose is included in a control loop. In order to reproduce the information at a speed different from the recording speed, for example to display slow-motion pictures or still pictures, the reflecting element may be subjected by means of a control signal to an abrupt change in angular position so that the scanning point undergoes an abrupt radial displacement. This displacement preferably takes place during the frame flyback periods of the video information.

  • Patent number: 4148118
Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus for storing and serially positioning a series of carrier strip mounted electrical connectors at a wire insertion station whereat pairs of small gauge insulated wires are trimmed and inserted into the electrical connectors. Each wire-receiving portion of a connector is located by a projecting portion on the connector. A reeling device advances the carrier strip until the projecting portion registers against a stop which momentarily positions the wire-receiving portion correctly at the insertion station. Subsequent to connection of a pair of wires in the connector the stop is removed allowing advancement of the carrier strip. The stop is then replaced to engage another of the projections on the same connector or another connector to position momentarily another wire-receiving portion of the connector at the insertion station.

  • Patent number: 4148125
Abstract: Three pressure elements are employed in reducing the transverse area circumscribed by the outer periphery of a resilient ring type seal to permit its placement in a groove formed in a bore which is smaller in circumference than the outer periphery of the seal. One pressure element is applied to the outer periphery of the seal, and two to its inner periphery at points which are spaced equally on either side of a line which extends from the center of the seal through the outer pressure element. The two inner pressure elements are then rotated outwardly in opposite directions around the outer pressure element to fold a portion of the seal inwardly on itself around the outer pressure element, thereby reducing the transverse area circumscribed by the outer periphery of the seal. While so reduced, the seal is placed within the bore opposite the groove, and the outer pressure element then drawn axially out of engagement with the outer periphery of the seal to permit its expansion into the groove.

  • Patent number: 4148127
Abstract: A method of applying a band-type crack arrestor to a pipeline formed from a plurality of sections of pipe connected together end-to-end relation comprising placing the arrestor over the outer diameter of a pipe section and applying radial force to the inner diameter of the pipe section to engage the arrestor in a substantially stress free tight fit.

  • Patent number: 4148128
Abstract: A display device wherein a liquid crystal is contained between accurately spaced transparent electrical contacts to allow control over the transparency or transmissive properties of the display by application of a voltage to the contacts. In one version the spacing is provided by an inorganic frit of particles which occupy the space between the electrical contacts and impart a ground glass optical property. The particles provide accurate separation that prevents the contacts from short circuiting and when immersed in a liquid crystal give the display an overall transparent or other characteristic as desired. Preferably, the contacts are applied to glass substrates which are hermetically sealed by fusion of a denser glass frit applied between peripheral edges of the substrates. In a further version, spacing is provided by a set of legs perpendicularly emanating from one of the electrical contacts and supporting it from the other electrical contact.

  • Patent number: 4148129
Abstract: A multifilamentary superconductor having a large number fo NbTi filaments in an aluminum alloy matrix which is stabilized by a high-purity aluminum sheath is disclosed, together with the method of its manufacture. An Al alloy billet having a number of NbTi rods disposed therein is extruded. A superpure Al sheath is added; this product is then enclosed in copper and wiredrawn after which the copper is etched off.
