  • Patent number: 4165727
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine an automatic fuel pump switch connects a fuel pump motor to the battery. An electronic sensing circuit is connected to the output winding of an engine-driven alternator which is also connected to charge the battery. The sensing circuit includes a sensing transistor connected to continuously sense the two instantaneous voltages relating to ground that appear as alternating current (A.C.) voltages at the opposite ends of the alternator output winding and produces an output only when one voltage is above a selected positive level while the other voltage is lower than the first voltage by a minimum amount. A control transistor circuit is connected to the output of the sensing transistor and is turned on to operate the fuel pump only when the engine is turning over at a sufficient rate to start and run.

  • Patent number: 4165744
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing dynamic keratometry and keratoscopy. The apparatus projects a substantially circumferentially continuous circle of light onto a cornea and the reflection from the cornea is observable in an unrefracted state through a central opening in the apparatus. Systematically varying the distance of the apparatus from the cornea does not significantly affect the sharpness of the unrefracted reflected image, affecting only its diameter so that the circle of light can be caused to pass over the entire cornea for dynamic examination of its curvature. A particular application of the apparatus is in evaluating the effects of surgery upon corneal curvature both during and after surgery. The method of the invention involves movement of a circle of light across all regions of the cornea from the center to the corneal periphery to determine curvature of the entire cornea.

  • Patent number: 4165753
Abstract: A smoker's pipe has a mouthpiece opening formed at the intersection of the walls of a smoke-receiving housing. The smoke is cooled and humidified by passing it upwardly through a body of water, the smoke being introduced into the water by a bubble forming means. The bubble forming means has a plurality of apertures which break the smoke into a plurality of bubble-forming streams to reduce the size of the bubbles and to increase the interaction between the bubbles and the water. Carryover of water into the mouthpiece is minimized by providing a deentrainment chamber in the flow path between the smoke cooling chamber and the mouthpiece. In the deentrainment chamber, the smoke ascends and the water descends to drain gravitationally through a check valve near the bottom of the deentrainment chamber. • Patent number: 4165767
Abstract: A machine which converts a strand of wire into a body of meandering shape has two carriers which rotate about parallel axes and respectively carry annuli of pins. One annulus of pins surrounds the other annulus of pins, and each pin of one annulus is adjacent to a pin of the other annulus. When the carriers rotate, neighboring pins of the two annuli move toward each other during one-half of each orbital movement about the respective axes and away from each other during the other half of each orbital movement. A looping device winds the wire alternately about the oncoming pins of the inner and outer annuli while the neighboring pins move away from each other whereby the wire is converted into a meandering body and the wire portions between successive pins are stretched to assume a predetermined shape. The meandering body is stripped off the pins while the neighboring pins move nearer to each other.

  • Patent number: 4165769
Abstract: The invention relates to a filling system for a secondary battery. A stopper is inserted in the battery and has a liquid channel passing through it, the passage being closable by means of an inlet valve controlled by the level of the liquid in the battery. The stopper cooperates with a filling nozzle which is connected to a storage container for the filling liquid. The nozzle is movable relatively to the stopper and may be inserted through a closable filling opening of the stopper. The nozzle is provided with an outlet opening associated with an outlet valve which cooperates with and is operated by an opening element carried by the stopper when the nozzle is inserted into the stopper.

  • Patent number: 4165772
Abstract: A device for driving screws, rivets and the like is disclosed which has a nozzle consisting of an upper half part and an under half part, which are movable relative to each other. By pressing a lever with a finger of the operator and then releasing it, the nozzle is opened and closed in order to grasp screws, rivets and the like. Between the two halves of the nozzle a center rod extends coaxially with the nozzle; and, by pressing a grip end cylinder of the device, the nozzle is opened and simultaneously the center rod is thrusted towards the tip of the nozzle so that the rivet or the like may be pushed out. Alternatively, by rotating a rotary cylinder of the device while pressing the grip end cylinder, the center rod is thrusted towards the tip of the nozzle and rotated so that the screw may be driven in a work piece.

  • Patent number: 4165774
Abstract: An improved tire-slip preventing device consisting of a plurality of cross belts arranged across a pair of parallel cords in the form of a ladder is constructed so that one end of every other cross belt can be detached from the associated cord. The detachable end of every other cross belt is attached to the associated cord after the device has been wrapped about the tire, whereby a very tight fit between the tire and the device can be easily obtained. The last cross belt at one end is made detachable or otherwise one of the cords is provided at an intermediate portion thereof with a separable link, thus permitting the device to be wrapped about the tire without raising the vehicle or driving it onto the device.
