Patent number: RE30188Abstract: A system for varying valve timing; i.e. the rotational angle of the crankshaft during which an intake or an exhaust valve of a cylinder of a reciprocating internal combustion engine is open which results in varying valve overlap, and for varying valve lift of such intake and exhaust valves. A desmodromic cam and cam follower convert rotation of a cam shaft to reciprocating rotation, or oscillation, of the cam follower. The reciprocating rotation of the cam follower is converted by the interaction of a secondary cylindrical cam, a cylindrical control ring, and a reciprocating member to linear motion of the reciprocating member which reciprocating member is operatively connected to a poppet valve. Timing and lift of the reciprocating member and valve are variable over predetermined limits as a function of engine rpm and load by rotation of the cylindrical control ring. Each valve train positively closes as well as opens its associated valve.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Inventor: Wilfred F. Predhome, Jr.

Patent number: RE30189Abstract: A fuel injection system for a diesel engine. An injection rate control device, such as an auxiliary spring, is connected in line with the conventional injection train which operates the injector plunger in synchronism with the rotation of the camshaft. When an auxiliary spring is used as the injection rate control device, the auxiliary spring has a lower spring rate than that of the injection train so that the injector plunger is advanced at a different rate when it is under the control of the auxiliary spring. Means are included for rendering the auxiliary spring ineffective during a portion of the plunger advancement so that the rate of plunger advancement is controlled by the auxiliary spring during the initial part of the advancing stroke, and by the conventional part of the injection train during the balance of the advancing stroke. The auxiliary spring automatically varies ignition timing and injection rate as a function of engine speed and/or load.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1977Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Assignee: Cummins Engine CompanyInventor: Julius P. Patent number: 4183102Abstract: The invention provides a prosthetic device for introduction into a duct and for lining an interior wall portion of the duct. The device comprises a generally toroidal, hollow, inflatable sleeve and means for introducing a pressurized fluid into the sleeve. The sleeve is made of a material that is impermeable to the pressurized fluid. At least the outer portion of the sleeve is made of a flexible material capable of deforming to conform to the shape of said interior wall portion of the duct. The device can be introduced into the duct and correctly positioned when it is in a deflated state. Subsequently, it is inflated by introducing the pressurized fluid. This causes the outer portion of the sleeve to expand and grip said interior wall portion of the duct, while leaving a central channel for the passage of the liquid in the duct. The device may also comprise a plurality of such sleeves connected together in a side-by-side relationship.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1977Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Inventor: Jacques Guiset

Patent number: 4183103Abstract: A heart valve including a generally annular body and a disc within the body. A ring-like protuberance projects from one face of the disc, and a fulcrum member projecting into the central opening of the valve body engages the inner surface of the protuberance. The disc pivots about the fulcrum member, to open and close the valve, and fits loosely between the fulcrum member and retaining elements so that the disc can rotate in its own plane. The rig-like protuberance defines an abutment responsive to fluid flowing in the no-flow direction of the valve for aiding pivotal movement of the disc to close the valve. An upstanding continuous wall on the face of the disc opposite the protuberance responds to fluid flow in the flow direction of the valve for aiding the pivotal movement of the disc to open the valve. The fulcrum member carries a guide plate which cooperates with the free end of the fulcrum means for preventing movement of the disc in its own plane when the valve is closed.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Inventor: Eric Bloch

Patent number: 4183111Abstract: This invention provides a sleeping bag construction which may be used for sleeping either one person or two persons. Basically this is accomplished by providing a pair of pockets on the outside of a single sleeping bag with a module removably attached to the bag inside each pocket, which is open at the head so that each module can fold outwardly to form a pillow at the head of the bag. For a single bag only the bottom module need be folded out. The single bag is so constructed that it can be opened out and used as the bottom panel of a double sleeping and a similar panel with or without pockets and modules but with matching edge fasteners can be used as the top panel. In this way the modules of the bottom panel can be folded out to form two pillows side by side.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Inventor: Pelepa Zahavkochav

Patent number: 4183112Abstract: A device for scrubbing carpet having a brush which rotates about a point which is eccentrically driven in a small circle. The bristled area of the brush has a number of protruding areas around its periphery. When the scrubber is used with powdered cleaning composition, the bristles in these protruding areas press the powder down into the pile of the carpet and so tend to minimize redistribution of the powder by the brush as it rotates. A press bar may be located at the front of the machine to press powder down into the pile of the carpet. Means may also be included for dispensing powder in front of the press bar.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1977Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Assignee: Milliken Research CorporationInventors: Robert S. Patent number: 4183113Abstract: An improved rotary scraper having a central rotatable hub and a plurality of scraper members pivotally attached to said hub and extending outwardly therefrom for sliding engagement with and at an angle to a work surface is provided. The scraper members each comprise a coil spring disposed about a rod formed in the hub and a pair of generally parallel equal length spring fingers extending from the ends of said coil. During rotation, the scraper members are restrained in a position at an angle to the work surface by means of one finger of each pair bearing against the spring coil on an adjacent rod disposed in the hub. The finger which is restrained by the adjacent rod is stiffer than the other finger of the pair, which is restrained only by the coil, so that the degree of scraping action can be controlled by the pressure exerted upon the hub to bring the less stiff finger or both fingers into contact with the work surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Inventor: Robert Fusco
