  • Patent number: 4198827
Abstract: Improved power cycles for improving the production of power and refrigeration and for conserving thermal energy, utilizing as a common basic characteristic, a hydride-dehydride-hydrogen power cycle in which hydrogen is reversibly combined with a hydride-forming material at a relatively low temperature and pressure, the hydrided material is then heated at constant volume to chemically compress the hydrogen, and finally the material is dehydrided by further heating the material to release hydrogen gas at relatively high pressure and temperature. The pressurized high temperature hydrogen gas as thus developed is used in various ways for producing power and refrigeration, including functioning as a low temperature heat sink for certain auxiliary or ancillary power cycles, prior to recycling the hydrogen gas for reuse in the described hydride-dehydride-hydrogen cycle.

  • Patent number: 4198828
Abstract: A device for supplying coolant to a cryostat has a container containing liquified gas. An insulated first tube supplies coolant gas from the container to the cryostat. An end part of this tube is located inside the container and is bent into a U-shape so that the bend is immersed in the liquified gas, but the mouth of the tube at the free end thereof inside the container, opens above the level of the liquified gas so that the coolant gas can enter the first tube. After leaving the cryostat, the coolant is conveyed to a suction inlet of a pump which propels the coolant along a second tube which opens into the container below the liquid level. A heat exchanger to give a cooling effect is disposed adjacent this U-bend.

Abstract: This invention relates to cryopumps, and consists in the incorporation of walls for trapping by condensation exemplified by outer faces of partitions, and walls for trapping by adsorption, exemplified by inner faces of these partitions. These walls define a confined area in the closed position, in which the adsorbent is isolated from condensable gases. Once these gases have been condensed on the said outer faces, the partitions are opened to place the adsorbent layers in communication with the remainder of the pumping enclosure. The invention is applicable to the production of high and uncontaminated vacua (in particular for the production of thin films).

  • Patent number: 4198831
Abstract: An ice maker having structure for forming an ice column which is passed through a constricting nozzle. A delivery structure is arranged to receive the ice column and cause selectively the shearing of the ice column into full sized ice bodies, approximately half size ice bodies, or cracked ice. The delivery structure may include a breaker tube having an inwardly directed projection and defining a deflecting structure for shearing the ice at preselected intervals. The delivery structure may further include a selectively installable adapter defining a second inwardly directed projection for causing shearing of the ice column at preselected intervals less than that effected by the projection in the breaker tube. A blade may be removably associated with the adapter for selectively causing shattering of the ice column so as to form cracked ice, when desired. An extension tube may be associated with the breaker tube for delivering the ice bodies and cracked ice in any direction from the ice maker.
