  • Patent number: 4229970
Abstract: The rheological properties of an extrudable material can be measured by extruding a strand of the material, measuring its diameter continuously, to give a series of diameter values, interpreting the variations in the strand diameter so as to characterize the surface of the strand, and deriving rheological data from the surface characteristics of the strand. The variations in the strand diameter can be interpreted as to peak-to-peak amplitude, average diameter value, the frequency of significant extreme values, standard deviations from a mean value, and the like. By means of these mathematical characterizations, the rheological behavior of the extrudable material can then be derived. The scorch behavior of a curable elastomer can be measured. The heterogeneity of a rubber compound can be described, or the macromolecular properties of a polymer can be measured (such as "gel", or degree of cross-linking.

  • Patent number: 4229991
Abstract: A cone drive, high output speed reducer, having a low clearance for low profile applications. An input shaft drives a helical idler pinion which in turn drives two other helical idler pinions. The two other idler pinions are each mounted on a separate shaft carrying a cone drive worm. The two worm shafts turn in unison, and the worms are each meshed with a separate worm gear. The two worm gears are operatively mounted on an output shaft. One of the helical idler pinions is provided with an adjustment means for equalizing the load sharing. That is, to provide equal loads on each of the helical pinions for load sharing throughout the twin drive gearing units of the speed reducer. The speed reducer may be provided with either an air cooling system or a water cooling system.

  • Patent number: 4229995
Abstract: A valve spindle drive is disclosed in which the travel of the spindle is limited by a locking mechanism. The spindle is driven by a gearing system on which locking rings are provided. Each locking ring permits rotation in one direction. Arms resiliently mounted on the valve housing carry a second pair of locking rings for mating with the rings on the gearing system. Deflection of the arms during travel of the spindle actuates switches for controlling a spindle motor drive. Movement of the spindle and gearing relative to the second pair of locking elements provides for engagement of a pair of respective locking rings to prevent further spindle travel. The other pair of rings is prevented from coupling by a cam device carried by the gearing.

  • Patent number: 4229997
Abstract: Two transmission members of a planetary gear transmission in a hub of a driven vehicle wheel are driven simultaneously at different speeds in a forward or backward direction. Driven forward movement of the slower transmission member is transmitted to the hub shell by an overrunning clutch. A second clutch connects the other transmission member to the hub shell when operated by a centrifugal governor at a certain rotary speed. A control device responds to backward rotation of the transmission members, as by back-pedaling, for overriding the governor and for operating the second clutch independently of the rotary speed.

  • Patent number: 4229999
Abstract: The valve adjustment tool includes an elongated barrel having a bore therethrough. The upper portion of the barrel is provided with a tool land and a length of external threads. The lower end of the barrel is provided with an integral collet which forms a nut socket. The collet is surrounded by a compression collar. An elongated internally threaded sleeve overlays the barrel. The sleeve abuts the compression collar. When the sleeve is threaded downwardly on the barrel, the collar compresses the collet. When the sleeve is threaded upwardly on the barrel, the collar is free to move and the collet assumes its uncompressed state. An elongated valve adjuster driver is also provided. The driver is provided with a large disc shaped knob at its upper end and an engagement lug at its lower end. The driver normally reposes within the through-bore of the barrel and is rotatable therein and removable therefrom. The top of the disc shaped knob provides a landing for the foot of a dial indicator.

  • Patent number: 4230001
Abstract: Tatooing pincers for marking ears of animals by injection of tatooing liquid. Pincers comprise a support and first and second jaws. Second jaw carries a number of hollow needles protruding to first jaw. Second jaw is yieldably connected to a drive by an intermediate part comprising a pump chamber connected with the hollow needles. The volume of the pump chamber is reduced when intermediate part yields under increased pressure after needles have fully penetrated animals ear between jaws, and tatooing liquid in pump chamber is injected via needles. Thus increased pressure provides for cleaning of needle holes from particles of skin resulting from penetration. Tatooing liquid is sucked into pump chamber from a storage chamber via check valves. A pneumatic drive may be used to facilitate operation.

  • Patent number: 4230003
Abstract: A novel apparatus is provided for sequentially feeding elongated workpieces in timed progression to a work performing area of a lathe. The lathe includes suitable means for grasping the ends of the workpiece once positioned within the work performing area and for rotatably driving the workpiece while performing a machining operation on the workpiece. The feed apparatus comprises a conveyor for sequentially moving the workpieces underneath the work performing area so that the workpieces are parallel to the axis of rotation of the lathe driving means but spaced downwardly therefrom. Elevator arms engage and lift a single workpiece to the work performing area whereupon the lathe engages the workpiece and performs the desired machining operation. Upon completion of the machining operation, the elevator arms return the workpiece to the conveyor. The conveyor then moves a subsequent workpiece into position for engagement with the elevator arms.
