  • Patent number: 4254523
Abstract: An offshore terminal of the type which includes a dedicated vessel which rigidly supports a transfer structure beyond one end of the vessel, and with the transfer structure held by catenary chains to the sea floor. The transfer structure lies very close to an end of the vessel, but it has an underwater lower end which lies at a level substantially no higher than the adjacent end of the vessel, to avoid the possibility of the catenary chains hitting the vessel. The transfer structure extends from below water to above water, and the hose structure extending up from the sea floor extends through the transfer structure to protect it from surface waves. A product distribution unit (PDU) lies at the top of the transfer structure and has a turning portion connected to the vessel, the PDU being connected to the vessel independently of a massive mooring structure that connects a rotatable portion of the transfer structure to the vessel to transfer large loads.

Abstract: A method of drying brown coal in which the brown coal is pelletized before the drying into pellets of 2 to 5 mm dia. by a wet pelletizing process making use of the water contained by the coal itself as the binder. The brown coal in the form of dried pellets has a larger bulk density than the brown coal in the form of fine powders which are obtained when the brown coal after the exploitation is directly dried, and, therefore, contributes to the reduction of the transportation cost. In addition, the dried brown coal in the form of pellets can be handled and transported in quite an easy manner, as compared with the case of powdered brown coal. Further, thanks to the improved ventilation afforded by the gaps between the pellets, the possibility or chance of undesirable spontaneous combustion is greatly reduced.

Abstract: A drying cylinder for a paper-making machine comprises a cylinder barrel with end covers mounted on a hollow shaft. Steam for heating the cylinder can be introduced through an inlet at an end of the shaft. The steam passes through openings along the hollow shaft to heat the barrel. In order to reduce the risk of pollutants or condensate entering the annular space between the cylinder barrel and the hollow shaft, the openings in the hollow shaft are provided with tubular components which project into the interior of the hollow shaft. Either the tubular components themselves are shaped or a baffle plate is provided for blocking entrance of pollutants into the tubular components. A suction device removes condensate from the inside of the inner shaft.

Abstract: A structure for an electrical display of the human heart and cardiovascular system, which is useful in teaching the functioning of this system. A planar or raised outline drawing of the heart and related body parts is provided with a lamp and electrical contact in identifiable areas of the outline of the heart and other parts of the cardiovascular system. Two rows of electrical contacts are provided adjacent a tabulation of names of portions of the cardiovascular system, in order of blood flow. A power source, a bell, and two probes are provided. Touching one probe to a contact adjacent the name of a part of the cardiovascular system will cause a lamp in the corresponding outlined area to illuminate. Touching one probe to a different contact adjacent a name, and the other probe to a contact in the appropriate outlined area will cause a bell or buzzer to sound.

Abstract: Footwear comprising cloth inner sole, back and front members constructed of three separate layers of jean material quilted together and frayed at their edges. The back and front members are sewn to the inner sole about the periphery of the inner sole and a rubber outer sole is sewn to the inner sole about the periphery thereof. A three layer, jean material, tie extends completely around the top of the back member of the footwear and beyond the front end thereof for securing the footwear to a human ankle. In manufacture of the footwear, the back is sewn to the inner sole at the back of the inner sole initially and then toward the front of the inner sole on both sides thereof to within a short distance of both ends of the back member, the front member is completely sewn to the front of the inner sole around the periphery thereof, after which the sewing of the back member to the inner sole is completed.

  • Patent number: 4254567
Abstract: A card index comprises a housing containing a drawer which holds a stack of punched cards. All the cards have punched holes in which a row of dogs in the bottom of the drawer engage and the cards also have punched selection holes in which selection stop cams can engage. Each card has selection holes in register with all of the stop cams except one. To select a card, a button corresponding to the card is pressed and this rocks a key lever to move the corresponding stop cam downwards. The cam passes through the selection holes in all the cards until it reaches the selected card which has no hole in register with that cam. Accordingly, the selected card and the cards, if any, below are pressed downwards and are held on the dogs. The drawer is released by depression of the button and is opened by a spring. As it opens, the drawer moves the cards which are pressed down on the dogs out of the housing with the selected card on top, but the cards above the selected card are retained in the housing by the stop cam.
