  • Patent number: 4262487
Abstract: This invention describes a double wall step-liner construction for a combustion chamber of a combustion turbine. The chamber is a series of concentric cylindrical segments stacked in overlapping arrangement such that the leading edge of each outer segment and the terminal edge of each inner segment are in general axial alignment so as to form a continuous double wall throughout the axial length of the step-liner configuration. Each cylindrical segment is attached at its inlet end and at its outlet end to the adjacent cylindrical segment by an annular transistion member formed of a wire mesh secured to each respective cylindrical segment with high temperature brazing. The relative thermal expansion between the inner and outer cylindrical segments (both axially and radially) is accommodated by deflection and distortion of the wire mesh transition members which also permits cooling air to enter between the overlapping segments and to be discharged therefrom into the combustion chamber with minimum interference.

  • Patent number: 4262491
Abstract: Modulating system for electrically or pneumatically controlled chillers in which a sensor senses the space condition, in a controlled environment or space. Output signals from an enthalpy sensor or other sensor representing the space condition are fed to chiller modulator electronic controls and thence to the chiller modulator interface controls, be they electric or pneumatic. The sensor monitors the conditions in or returning from the controlled space or environment. By measuring both humidity and temperature, the enthalpy sensor generates an effective temperature or comfort level. The input signal from the sensor is compared to an operator adjustable set-point. If the measured condition is less than the set-point, an error signal is generated which is proportional to the difference multiplied by an operator-set sensitivity control.

  • Patent number: 4262495
Abstract: In an air conditioning system for an aircraft cabin, stale air is withdrawn from the cabin, then filtered, compressed and cooled in a recirculation loop which returns the reconditioned air to an air distribution manifold that supplies the cabin with fresh air. The compression stage moves the air through the recirculation loop and is provided by an air compressor driven by a power turbine that is in turn rotated by a flow of cabin air to an overboard exhaust nozzle caused by a cabin-to-ambient pressure differential. Cooling is provided by an air/air heat exchanger that transfers heat from the recirculation air, warmed by the compression stage, to cooler air discharged from the output side of the power turbine and flowing to the overboard exhaust nozzle. In one embodiment, the foregoing recirculation loop is integrated with an air cycle machine refrigeration stage of a conventional cabin air conditioning system supplied by fresh engine bleed air.

Abstract: In a method of correcting a distorted pipe end to an original substantially true circular cross-section, external loads are applied to the outer peripheral surface of the pipe adjacent to the end thereof to forcibly deform the pipe end to the substantially true circular cross-section. The external loads are maintained to keep this substantially true circular cross-sectional shape while an internal pressure is applied to the inner peripheral surface of the pipe end until a circumferential stress produced in the pipe reaches an amount which exceeds the yield stress of the pipe to give a radial permanent deformation to the pipe for thereby producing a circumferentially uniformly distributed residual stress in the pipe.

Abstract: A tube expander (10) for extrudably deforming tubes (12) into conformity with a flange (16) has a plurality of first and second forming members (28,30) circumferentially arranged on a mandrel (20). In an initial position, the forming members (28,30) are axially offset and radially retracted for ease of insertion into the bore (13) of the tube (12). After insertion, the mandrel (20) is partially withdrawn by an actuator (64) and by such action, the forming members (28,30) are brought together in an abutting, axially aligned, and radially expanded relationship such that workpiece-contacting surfaces (40,42) of the forming members (28,30) are brought into substantially continuous circumferential contact with the tube bore 13. The workpiece-contacting surfaces (40,42) are maintained in continuous circumferential contact with the tube bore 13 as the forming members (28,30) and the mandrel (20) are withdrawn from the tube end, thereby uniformly extruding the tube.

Abstract: In chromatography, the weight percent of higher boiling hydrocarbons is estimated by comparing areas under the certain segments of chromatograms. This procedure is subject to both human and equipment errors. A supplemental procedure for measuring the percent of higher boiling point hydrocarbons is disclosed. This procedure is specially related to chromatography and uses gradual heating and inert gas vaporization of the lower boiling point hydrocarbons in the sample material. In the procedure, a sample of the same hydrocarbon tested in the chromatograph is weighed and is heated to the same temperature as used in the chromatograph while flowing inert gas, e.g. helium, past the sample. After reaching this temperature, gas flow is continued for at least eight minutes. The residual sample is weighed and the difference used to determine and check the chromatograph estimation. The procedure may be checked with a calibrated sample of hydrocarbons boiling at and below the final maximum test temperature.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for determining the gel point of a sample of epoxy resin. An aluminum foil tube containing the sample is inserted into the test pressure sensor which is located within a preheated laboratory environmental chamber. The test pressure sensor consists of two knurled cylinders each rotatably mounted about its axis wherein the axes are parallel and the plane of the two axes is horizontal. The axis of one of the cylinders is fixedly mounted. The axis of the other cylinder is slidably mounted within the horizontal plane of the two axes. A spring tends to force the axis of the slidably mounted cylinder toward the axis of the fixedly mounted cylinder. The sample becomes liquid within the tube, and the two are drawn into the nip of the cylinders by their rotation. The cylinders continue to rotate collapsing the sample tube within the nip of the cylinders causing the liquid resin to be displaced above the nip of the cylinders within the sample tube.

Abstract: This invention relates to an instrument for measuring spontaneous ignition in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The instrument comprises a logic gate unit, which receives pulses representative of gas ionizations between the plug electrodes and control signals having a repetition period corresponding to a prefixed number of active cycles of the cylinder being checked and a duration corresponding to a prefixed number of passive cycles of the same cylinder during a spontaneous ignition measurement stage. The logic gate unit delines a first counting signal each time it receives a control signal and a second counting signal each time it receives a pulse during the duration of said control signal. First and second counter means receive and count said first and second counting signals, thus providing an indication of the number of measurement stages effected and respectively, of the number of measurement stages, in which spontaneous ignition has occurred.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a pressure sensitive indicating device of extremely simplified nature, providing a visual indication of a predetermined pressure threshold level. A typical and advantageous form of the device is a valve or valve extension member for a pneumatic tire, providing a visual indication of the existence or not of a desired pressure level. The device, in its most basic form, comprises an element formed of a natural or synthetic deformable elastomer, designed to expand upon exposure to increasing pressure levels. A covering element is associated with the deformable elastomer and is displaced by distention of the elastomer. By providing the deformable elastomer in a distinctively different color than the cover element, the displacement of the cover upon pressurization to a desired threshold, is readily evident to the observer.
