  • Patent number: 4291583
Abstract: A drag-type flow meter is disclosed of the type having a drag plate disposed in the fluid flow stream, the velocity of which is to be measured. The drag plate is mounted on a cantilevered arm which is pivitally mounted externally of the fluid flow passage, with a tensioned wire counteracting the drag force tending to pivot the arm. The tensioned wire is disposed in a magentic field and an electrical current is passed through the wire to cause vibration of the wire, the frequency of which varies linearly with the drag force exerted on the drag plate due to the corresponding change in wire tension. Varying frequency of the current provides a digital electrical signal which varies linearly with fluid flow velocity. Embodiments are described enclosing the wire mounting components in a vacuum housing in order to minimize the air damping of the wire vibration, and a mounting arrangement minimizing the effects of temperature variation on the output signal.

  • Patent number: 4291584
Abstract: A turbine flow meter is disclosed of the type including a turbine rotor disposed in a fluid flow passage, the turbine receiving the fluid flow to be measured and mounted so as to restrain rotary movement in reaction to the change of momentum imposed on the fluid by the turbine rotor blades. A reactive force sensing arrangement measures the force acting on the turbine rotor blades and generates signals, related to the rate of fluid flow. These signals are combined with downstream pressure and temperature signals to provide a mass rate of flow output signal. The turbine rotor is disposed downstream from a shielding stator positioned such that upon increasing fluid flow and resultant advancing rotary position of the turbine rotor, a lesser proportion of the total fluid flow in the passage is intercepted by the turbine rotor. The net result is a linearizing of the relationship between the fluid flow and the reactive force acting on the turbine rotor.

  • Patent number: 4291594
Abstract: In the regulation of a motor-drive unit for a motor vehicle having a heat-engine and a continuously variable ratio transmission, in a clutch-engaged phase the heat-engine fuel feed is controlled so that it is a function of the displacement of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle and of the speed of the heat-engine such that the power delivered by the engine is substantially equal to the power required for that displacement of the accelerator pedal. In addition, the transmission ratio is controlled so that the speed of the heat-engine approaches an ideal speed which depends upon the power required and is predetermined for operation of the motor-drive unit which is optimalized in accordance with a chosen criterion. Operation is thus obtained with, for example, minimum consumption or pollution while taking into account, in the transient phase, the operation desired by the driver.

  • Patent number: 4291612
Abstract: A power brake system has a brake booster operable by differential air pressure provided by a source of vacuum and a source of compressed air pressure. The differential air pressure control valve assembly of the invention maintains a substantially constant available differential of air pressure between the vacuum and compressed air pressures available to the brake booster for booster operation. In the charging mode it directs air pressure from an air pressure pump to an accumulator connected to the pressure inlet side of the booster, charging until the desired pressure differential is attained. In the storage mode, the air pressure from the pump is permitted to flow in its usual manner to another device or circuit utilizing the air pressure. This may be, for example, a part of the vehicle engine emission control system. In the pressure relief mode, the control valve vents excess accumulated pressure to exhaust.

  • Patent number: 4291619
Abstract: A screw press for extracting liquids from materials such as fruits, vegetables, or the like having a cylindrical barrel and a rotatable shaft and helical feed and compression screw concentric with the barrel and having the shaft extending through the barrel. A portion of the barrel rearward from the feed and compression screw forms a cylindrical pressing chamber having screen walls for passing extracted liquids therethrough. The outlet end of the cylindrical pressing chamber is closed by a circular door slidably mounted on the drive shaft. Hydraulic actuators apply adjustable pressure to the outside surface of the door closing the chamber when in a non-operating condition. When material is being pressed in the pressing chamber, the internal pressure will overcome the external pressure causing the door to open for ejection of the dried material. The inner surface of the door includes projecting cutter bars.
