  • Patent number: 4309838
Abstract: Fish can lightly nibble bait off a hook before a fisherman becomes aware and is able to react by firmly setting the hook in the fish. Apparatus is provided for reacting to a fish lightly nibbling at the bait in a manner sufficient to swiftly jerk the hook thus firmly setting it in the fish. The apparatus may be preset so as to avoid being set off or tripped while being cast out onto the surface of the water. Also, the apparatus may be modified for ice fishing. The preset may be adjusted to varying levels of sensitivity depending upon the type of fish to be caught or the type of bait being used.

  • Patent number: 4309840
Abstract: An inflatable top is described having an attached manual rotation mechanism. The rotating body portion of the top includes an inflatable, plastic enclosure which expands to a desired shape when inflated with a gas. The rotation mechanism converts a linear force applied to the top, parallel to its vertical axis, into a rotation around its axis of the top and the rotation mechanism. The mechanism includes a helical member mounted for reciprocal movement into and out of a housing secured within the top. The helical member threads through a clutch element rotated by the linear motion of the helical member. The clutch element causes the top to rotate when the force applied to the helical member is in one direction and is disengaged and does not cause the top to rotate when the force applied to the helical member is in a different direction.

  • Patent number: 4309841
Abstract: A two-wheel toy vehicle, having a body, preferably, in the replica of a motorcycle, and an inertia energy flywheel and transmission gear mechanism for driving the vehicle (through the rear wheel) in a forward movement in both a one-wheel upwardly-extended position and a two-wheel position along the running surface. A shock-absorbing device is formed as part of the transmission gear mechanism for absorbing sudden shock forces between the flywheel and the rear wheel driven by the flywheel. In addition, the front wheel is rotatably mounted to the vehicle and in a manner for lateral movement. However, a device is formed on the front portion of the toy vehicle to limit the lateral movement of the front wheel to ensure that the vehicle is balanced and maintained in its one-wheel upwardly-extended position and when it falls from this one-wheel position to its two-wheel position along the running surface.

  • Patent number: 4309843
Abstract: A plant cultivation device comprised of a plurality of walls positioned parallel to each other and vertically inserted into the soil. Adjacent parallel walls are connected by a corrugated plate which has drainage holes positioned within parallel grooves on the plate. Hot water pipes are positioned within these grooves for supplying heat to the surrounding area. A layer of wood chips covers the hot water pipes and corrugated plate. The wood chip layer is in turn covered by a layer of cultivation soil. Steam discharge pipes are positioned adjacent to the partition walls at a point above the cultivation soil and are covered by a shield which interconnects to adjacent walls. • Patent number: 4309848
Abstract: An apparatus for finishing the tips of turbine blades and the like is provided. The invention is especially useful on worn turbine blades which have been repaired by adding weld material. An abrasive first removes excess weld material with a reciprocating motion and constant force. A sensor indicates when the abrasive is a predetermined distance above the intended finish contour surface and thereafter there is a predetermined fixed time in which the material removal continues. During the predetermined time period the motion of the abrasive is converted to one along a guided path corresponding to the path of the finished surface contour by apparatus such as a cam and cam follower. Thus, the time of refinishing is reduced and labor productivity is increased.

  • Patent number: 4309860
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for securing covers to metal foil containers, and for sealing the containers. The containers are of the type which have an open top, a horizontal flange surrounding the open top, and a peripheral vertical flange surrounding the horizontal flange, and the cover rests on the horizontal flange. The apparatus includes a stationary platform, on which the unsealed container rests, and a ring which surrounds the platform. The ring is vertically movable, and the top surface of the ring engages the horizontal flange of the container to move the container with it. Located above the ring is a die with an inner camming surface, and the ring will move the container upward so that the vertical flanges of the container engage the inner camming surface to crimp the flange inwardly and downwardly. A press then moves downwardly through an opening in the die to press the crimped flange down so that the cover is secured to the container and the container is sealed.

  • Patent number: 4309871
Abstract: In an air compressor-driven system, wherein compressed air and fuel are combined in a combustion chamber to produce hot gas for driving a turbine which then rotates the air compressor, surge is prevented by sensing an appropriate parameter, such as the flow rate of the compressed air at the compressor discharge outlet, and developing therefrom a feedback signal which varies the fuel flow to the combustion chamber to dynamically vary the compressor speed (and hence capacity) so that the discharge pressure versus discharge flow rate characteristic curve of the compressor always has a negative slope at the operating point, regardless of where that point is located on the curve. By providing a negative slope at all operating conditions, even when operating in the surge region of the pressure-flow plot, the system is incapable of surge.

Abstract: Set out herein is a fuel cell power plant for use with irrigation systems wherein the fuel cell is utilized to generate electric current to drive a pump motor. This pump motor drives a first water pump which receives water for distribution through a traveling irrigation system, the output of the first pump first conveyed into a condenser heat exchanger connected to a steam engine or turbine cycle. The fuel cell itself is contained within a boiler assembly and the heat of production of the electric power is used to generate steam which is sent to the steam engine. In the course of cooling the condenser gases of the steam engine the irrigating water is passed through a second pump driven by the steam engine and it is through this second pump that the pressure is raised sufficiently to allow for the necessary spraying fans.

  • Patent number: 4309875
Abstract: A self contained freezing device for forming a plug of ice within a pipe section. A refrigeration unit supplies refrigerant to a cradle like freezer unit within which the section of pipe to be frozen is held in spaced relation to the inner face of the freezer. The space between the underside of the pipe and the inner face of the freezer is filled with water, for example by spraying. As the water freezes, in contact with the cradle like freezer unit, it covers the outer surface of the pipe section with an ice jacket. Alternatively, a bag of freezable jel may be substituted for the water spray and placed over the inside face of the freezer; and then the pipe section is placed within the fold of the bag. In the case of either alternative, the refrigerant is maintained inside the freezer, and out of contact with the pipe.

Abstract: Apparatus for the application of liquids to moving material, such as patterned application of dyes to moving textile material, including a liquid applicator positioned above the material path of travel for continuously discharging liquid in a row of plural streams downwardly onto the material, a plurality of air jets for selectively deflecting selected of the continuously flowing streams in accordance with a pattern control device, and a collection chamber for receiving the deflected liquid to prevent its contact with the moving material. The deflecting air jets are mounted in a readily separable plate which mates the air jets in notches cut in the dye jet gun bar to provide ease of assembly and disassembly without effecting the relative position of the air jets to the dye jets in the gun bar.

  • Patent number: 4309882
Abstract: An antitheft device for a steering shaft of a motor vehicle has a latch which is movable between a latching and an unlatching position with respect to said steering shaft. A stop element in the form of a ball is provided in a radially extending opening in a stationary cylinder. The ball overhangs a projecting portion of the latch to prevent the projecting portion of the latch from moving past the ball. A rotating cylinder into which a key is inserted is rotatably mounted on the inside of the stationary cylinder and has a pair of circumferentially and longitudinally spaced detents into which the ball moves as the rotating cylinder moves past the radially extending opening. When the ball drops in the remote one of the detents, the projecting portion of the latch moves past the ball whereupon movement of the rotating cylinder moves the ball out of the detent to prevent the projecting portion of the latch from accidentally moving past the ball.
