  • Patent number: 4353242
Abstract: A method and apparatus for resolving overlapped chromatographic peaks or other overlapped data obtained from operation of a differential migration apparatus used to analyze a substance whose composition is to be determined. The invention involves using a second analytical apparatus, such as a spectrometer, to supplement the data obtained from the basic differential migration apparatus. A multi-channel detector is used to monitor and record the various sets of data obtained from these apparatus. Data corresponding to regions of overlap identified by the apparatus are assembled in a measured data set. An estimated data set is then compiled describing the estimated migrational time behavior of each of a plurality of compounds present within the overlapped region. An identifying data set is then calculated based upon the estimated data set and the measured data set.

  • Patent number: 4353244
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of determination of the change in subsurface structure of the earth resulting from the application of fluid pressure at a selected point, at a selected depth, in the earth, by measuring at least one physical parameter of the contour of the surface of the earth above the point of application of fluid pressure. The method involves positioning a plurality of tiltmeters on the earth above the point of application of fluid pressure arranged in a known array, and measuring the change in angle of tilt of the earth's surface at the point of placement of each sensor while varying the pressure and flow rate of fluid into the earth at the selected point. This invention further teaches how the individual values of incremental tilt at selected points on the earth's surface can be processed to provide indication of the azimuth of the vertical fracture in the earth, and an estimate of length of the fracture.

  • Patent number: 4353252
Abstract: In order to sense a liquid level, an input light pipe and output light pipe have angled ends such that light supplied to the input light pipe is directed from it to the output light pipe by total internal reflection as long as the ends are in a gas. When in a liquid, the index is such as to cause light in the input light pipe to refract into the liquid and not reach the output light pipe. By observing the other end of the output light pipe it becomes possible to determine if the angled ends are in liquid or gas, and thus detect a liquid level.

  • Patent number: 4353253
Abstract: A device for measuring the density of fluids comprises two float elements of unequal density distribution pivotally mounted on a common axis about which they rotate in opposite directions with change of density of the fluid in which they are immersed. The density is indicated by the position of an index carried by one element relative to a scale carried by the other element. Scale range is increased and scale linearity is improved by having the elements respond respectively differently to density changes in the upper and lower density ranges. Temperature compensation is effected by the choice of materials for the float elements relative to the thermal expansion characteristics of the fluid, and by the manner in which the relatively more dense and relatively less dense portions of each float element are mounted with respect to the axis.

  • Patent number: 4353256
Abstract: A parameter representative of a physical property of a continuously moving metal strip is determined by repetitively generating acoustical shock waves, containing ultrasonic frequencies, and adjacent the strip and measuring the speed of transmission of the shock wave in the strip. An electric spark generator with a collimator feeds the acoustic energy to the strip 10 and four microphones arranged as a first pair on opposite sides of the strip spaced a known distance from a second pair also on opposite sides of the strip pick up the signal transmitted through the strip. The difference between the mean time of arrival at the first pair and the mean time of arrival at the second pair enables the velocity of propagation in the strip to be determined despite movements of the strip transverse to its plane. The velocity of propagation in particular may be used as a measure of Young's modulus and hence, in the case of a material such as aluminium, as a measure of the temperature of heat treatment.

  • Patent number: 4353279
Abstract: An ensemble effect is produced in a digital tone generator by providing a master data set of words having values corresponding to the relative amplitudes of equally spaced points along one cycle of a waveform of a musical tone in which the fundamental frequency is deleted. These values are read sequentially and repetitively from a memory to produce a first analog tone. A second analog tone is produced by multiplying a data set corresponding to the fundamental frequency by a low frequency sinusoid. The first and second analog tones are summed to yield a musical tone having an ensemble effect.

  • Patent number: 4353288
Abstract: A rotary plug steering valve of the worm gear type for auxiliary power steering of motor vehicles is provided with a rotary plug valve and a coacting valve sleeve including means for flow passage of return hydraulic fluid to a servomotor via an inner ported sleeve disposed within the valve plug, which sleeve also serves as an alignment and bearing member for the valve plug. The advantage achieved by thus providing additional serial flow control edges between the rotary plug and a return connection via the inner sleeve is the reduction of hissing flow noises in steering operations, by a throttling of return oil flow during the relative rotation of the valve plug and the inner sleeve. This reduces the cross section of return oil flow passage, but causes no throttling in neutral position of the valve for straight ahead steering when respective passages of the valve plug and inner sleeve are in full register.
