  • Patent number: 4354347
Abstract: This disclosure is directed toward combined cycle power plants which include at least one gas turbine and one steam turbine thermally coupled through a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Exhaust gas from the gas turbine is used to heat feedwater into steam for the steam turbine. One optimum criterion is to design the HRSG so that the exit temperature of the exhaust gas is at a minimum without the occurrence of sulfur condensation on the economizer tube bundles. The allowable minimum temperature varies with the sulfur content of the fuel and, hence, it would be desirable to be able to adjust the tube surface temperature as necessary in accordance with the sulfur content of the gas turbine fuel.

  • Patent number: 4354352
Abstract: The use of a catalytic coating which acts to combine both the heat source and heat-transfer mechanism for a working fluid, such as that used in an external combustion engine. Maximum heat exchange is accomplished by the direct bonding of the coating, per se, to the engine head with a compound of catalytic agents which confines heat of combustion directly thereto. The preferred embodiment of the engine head surface may be finned or otherwise enlarged to provide for an increased surface area necessary for the heating of the engine head. This means of surface combustion results in a highly fuel-efficient engine and/or heat source with very low exhaust pollutants.

  • Patent number: 4354369
Abstract: A method is provided for eliminating internal voids in superplastically forming parts. A blank of material which is capable of being formed superplastically is held opposite a forming surface of a die. The blank is heated to the superplastic forming temperature and pressure is applied to both sides of the blank. This pressure is sufficient to prevent the formation of voids. The pressure on the side of the blank farthest from the die surface is then increased to superplastically form the material against the die surface. In a second embodiment, the pressure is applied after the blank has been formed either by maintaining the forming pressure to compreses the material between the forming pressure and the reaction of the die, or by applying a fluid pressure to both sides of the part, thereby removing voids by plastic deformation and diffusion.

  • Patent number: 4354375
Abstract: Various forms of tools are disclosed for effecting reciprocal movements between jaw members to be located between and exerting opposing thrusts on the flange and bolt head of a hollow wall anchor. For such an anchor driven through a plaster wall or wallboard with the flange brought flush against the inner surface thereof, the threaded bolt is unthreaded sufficiently to position the jaws as described. Operation of the tool to thrust the jaws apart causes the bolt to be drawn out axially, carrying the inner end of the anchor so as to decrease the distance between flange and inner end and deforming the anchor body for interlocking it with the wall material. Where such an anchor is initially only partly driven through the wall, due to its inner end being obstructed, the bolt is unthreaded and the jaws located between the thus spaced head and flange in the same manner.

  • Patent number: 4354377
Abstract: A fluid density transducer with a vibrating tube 16 coupled to excitation pick-up transducers 32 utilizes an elliptical tube 16, having a small degree of ellipticity, to compensate for the variation in the natural frequency of vibration, resulting from a variation in the fluid pressure, i.e. a rise in fluid pressure tending to lower the frequency produces a more circular and hence stiffer tube cross-section tending to increase the frequency. A sealed evacuated chamber 36, formed by connecting together cylindrical nodal masses 24 and 26 using a flexible coupling 28, is used to enclose the vibrating tube 16, thus avoiding the risk of contaminating, and thereby also affecting the calibration of, the tube 16. The tube is supported at each end by a spring plate 12 fixed around its outer periphery to a collar 10 and around its inner periphery to an end-plate 25 of the nodal mass 24 or 26.

  • Patent number: 4354381
Abstract: A novel method is disclosed for using the resonance behavior of reservoir sand to distinguish between oil-rich, gas-rich and water-rich zones. A wellbore is logged, as for example with a long spaced acoustic logging tool, to obtain data which are then interpreted to determine the damping of the acoustic signal in one sand versus another, or in that sand versus a reference sand having similar resonance characteristics.

  • Patent number: 4354383
Abstract: To measure the amount of liquid fuel in a ventilated fuel tank (1), the ventilation of the tank is stopped temporarily by a valve (7) and gas is removed from or fed into the unventilated tank through a device (12). A quantity indicative of the change in the gas state in the tank is measured after feeding in or removal of the gas to provide an indirect measurement of the amount of fuel in the tank. The gas may be removed from or fed into the tank at a constant volumetric flow rate, in which case the quantity measured will be the time taken for a predetermined alteration in the pressure of gas in the tank to occur. Alternatively, gas may be removed until a predetermined reduced pressure in the space in the tank is reached and the volume of gas removed can provide a direct or indirect measure of the amount of fuel in the tank. As a second alternative a predetermined volume of gas is removed and the alteration in pressure of the gas in the tank is measured.
