  • Patent number: 4354390
Abstract: A sled for use in tractor pulling contests, and the like, comprising a frame supported on front and rear wheels, a ballast mass supported by the frame, a pan adapted for sliding frictional engagement with the ground, and an articulated linkage mechanism for transfering the weight of the ballast from the wheels to pan. As the sled is pulled, the linkage mechanism, which is driven by rotation of the rear wheels, progressively shifts the weight of the sled from the wheels to the pan, by lowering the pan relative to the frame. The suspension springs for the rear axle have a greater vertical stroke than those for the front. Therefore, although the front wheels may ultimately be completely lifted from the ground during the weight transfer, the rear wheels always contact the ground with a force sufficient to drive the linkage mechanism. suBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONTractor pulling contests have become increasingly popular.

  • Patent number: 4354393
Abstract: Electrical and mechanical synchronization of two or more synchronously driven gyroscopes, mounted on the same platform, to minimize cross-talk induced drift, is achieved by bringing one gyroscope to a speed which is slightly higher than the other by driving it at a slightly higher frequency. At speed, coincidence of mechanical position is established by means of signals from pick-offs on each gyro and the drive for the faster gyroscope is shifted to the lower frequency. Electrical synchronism is established by restarting the lower frequency generator to instantaneously establish a predetermined relationship between a pick-off signal and the frequency generator. Phase-lock start-up of a single gyroscope by instantaneous shift of the phase of the driving voltage, relative to the gyroscope wheel position, is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4354414
Abstract: A keyboard operated electronic musical instrument with polyphonic portamento and glissando effects in which each key controls one of a number of tone generators through a table of frequency numbers. The frequency transitions are achieved by subtracting the frequency number of a new note from the frequency number controlling the current frequency of an assigned tone generator. A predetermined fraction of the difference is stored in increment registers and added successively to the frequency numbers of the current notes until these numbers are equal to the frequency number of the new note. The addition rate, which determines the frequency transition time, is adjustable by means of a variable frequency time clock. The assignment of the tone generators to the actuated keyswitches is accomplished in a manner which prevents objectionable frequency cross-over transitions even when the number of notes in successive chords is changed.

The load relief device provides release of loads from a hydraulic pressure supply pump of the power steering system when the output member of the system is near the end of its stroke by short-circuiting between a hydraulic pressure source and an oil reservoir of the power steering system. The load relief device includes an assembly for detecting the end of a stroke being executed by the power steering system, and upon detection of the end of the stroke, the assembly operates to bring a four-way valve of an open center type to a neutral position thereof, regardless of the steering torque being applied to the power steering system.

Abstract: A pneumatic operating device, e.g. for controlling valves, includes a cylinder (2) in which a piston (12) is movable. The piston has an axially extending rack part (11) having teeth which engage with teeth on an operating element (10) arranged in the cylinder wall (2b) for rotation transversely of the longitudinal axis of the piston and passing sealingly through said cylinder wall. The piston (12) is provided on the side opposite its rack part with a recess (24) for receiving a part of a spring (26) for the return movement of the piston. The recess (24) extends substantially into the rack part (11) of the piston, preferably through a distance of such length that it extends axially approximately up to or beyond a radial line perpendicular to the piston axis through the center of rotation of the operating element even when the piston is in a position in which the spring is compressed to its maximum.

  • Patent number: 4354425
Abstract: A fire-safe valve actuator which cooperates with a bolted bonnet type valve to define a bolt chamber with an exterior shroud supporting the actuator housing and providing a substantially imperfect barrier to prevent an external fire from coming into direct contact with the bolts or studs and nuts that connect the bonnet to the valve body. The bolt chamber may also be filled with an insulation material. The actuator may have a return spring connected to the actuator stem through a bearing so that the winding and unwinding of the spring does not result in any substantial torque being applied to the actuator stem. Similarly, any diaphragm in the actuator can be connected to the actuator stem by a bearing so that rotation of the stem will not impart torque to the diaphragm.

Abstract: To suppress bending oscillations, particularly when tensioning or blanket attachment grooves of operating cylinders of a rotary printing machine, specifically of an offset printing machine, are engaged with each other, bearings (4) are supported by tensioning bars (3), one end of which is pressed by a stop (17) or a cam (5) towards the bearing, the other being tensioned by a spring (7) or hydraulic (40-44) arrangement thereagainst. The cam can be released from pressing position upon receiving a "stop print" command. Alternatively, rather than pressing the ends of the pressure bar (3) against fixed portions, for example the side walls (18, 28) of the machine, two adjacent cylinders can be pressed against each other by connecting the respective ends of the pressure bars together, one of the connections preferably including a releasable, for example hydraulic pressure loaded joint (23) and the other having the spring or fluid pressure tensioning force applied thereto.
