  • Patent number: 4365471
Abstract: Compression waves are formed by detonating a mixture of fuel and air confined within a chamber that has a constricted output opening. The mixture is ignited instantaneously throughout a peripheral region of the chamber opposite the output opening, and this region is shaped relative to the dimensions of the chamber and the output opening so that the burning of the mixture accelerates toward the output opening and inward from the peripheral region. This dynamically compresses and detonates the mixture to form a high pressure compression wave and direct it out of the output opening. The instantaneous ignition can be by plasma jets or flames injected into the ignition region from an ignition chamber adjacent to the detonation chamber. The device can directly transform the chemical energy of a fuel into a high pressure thrust directed against a relatively movable resistance to serve as a prime mover suitable for many tasks.

  • Patent number: 4365473
Abstract: An underspeed actuator (18) is connected to the displacement control (17) for controlling the displacement of a variable displacement pump (11) of a hydrostatic transmission (10) in response to the pressure differential between low and high pressure control signals (A,B) wherein the pressure differential is directly proportional to the engine speed. An overspeed control valve means (41) is connected to the low and high pressure signals and decreases the pressure level of the high pressure signal received by the underspeed actuator (18) in response to the pressure differential exceeding a predetermined magnitude. This reduces the displacement of the variable displacement pump (11) thereby controlling the amount of engine overspeed caused by the hydrostatic transmission (10) driving the engine when the vehicle is descending a steep hill.

Abstract: A tool for crimping a connector sleeve onto the ends of cable strands or the like for joining the strands together consists of an anvil arm having a V-shaped notch therein pivotally mounted relative to a base for its notch to be swung into cooperative opposed relation with a V-shaped notch in a die block on the base for crimping a connector sleeve that is placed through the die block notch. The size of the crimp opening, defined by the two notches in cooperative opposed relation, is determined solely by the size of the notch in the die block. The notch in the anvil arm is the same for all crimp opening sizes. The die block has shoulder surfaces that are engaged by end portions of the walls of the anvil arm notch to bring the two notches into precise operative alignment and to stop relative movement of the notches together when they are in the spaced relation that will produce the size crimp desired.

  • Patent number: 4365508
Abstract: A limpness detector for examining documents at high speed. A pair of rollers having star-like cross-sectional configurations comprised of substantially V-shaped projections and interspaced V-shaped grooves are cooperatively arranged so that the projections of one of said rollers at least partially enter into the grooves of the other. The rollers are rotated in a synchronous manner. One swingably mounted roller is preferably yieldably urged toward the other. Documents to be examined are fed between the rollers and, depending upon their relative limpness or stiffness, serve to "lift" the swingable roller such that the amount of displacement between the rollers is a function of document limpness. Sensor means is utilized to detect the amount of displacement. Threshold detection circuitry is provided to facilitate calssification of the documents into limp, moderately stiff and stiff documents, for example. The apparatus may also be utilized to detect the presence of overlapping and/or multiply-fed documents.

  • Patent number: 4365511
Abstract: A signal varying over a wide dynamic range from a source (10) is input to a summing amplifier (12) along with the output of an adjustable reference generator (14). An error signal output of the summing amplifier (12), a subtraction of the output of the reference generator (14) from the input signal source (10), is applied to a rate network consisting of a capacitor (16) and a resistor (18), with the latter in a feedback loop for an amplifier (20). The output of the reference generator (14) is adjusted to maintain the error signal within the operating limits of the summing amplifier (12) by monitoring the output of the amplifier. During the time interval when the adjustment of the generator (14) is made, a compensating network (24) maintains the output of the amplifier (20) at the level previous to the adjustment interval. This provides a continuous output voltage at a terminal (22) that varies over an expanded range with reference to the input signal.

  • Patent number: 4365512
Abstract: An angular rate instrument adapted for mounting to a given object for measuring the rate of turn of the latter is disclosed herein. This instrument utilizes an angular accelerometer to sense angular acceleration to which the instrument is subjected and a circuit for integrating the difference between this signal and a reference signal to produce an integrated output signal corresponding to the rate of turn of the object. The angular rate instrument also utilizes a null circuit for producing the reference signal in response to and dependent on low frequency error signals which appear at the output of the signal integrating circuit. The null circuit uses a capacitor to provide the reference signal and means for maintaining the charge on the capacitor during power interruptions so as to prevent losing the reference signal as a result of such interruptions.

Abstract: A pulsed through-transmission ultrasonic non-destructive inspection of the internal structure in a tire wall is effected. The transmitted acoustic signals preferably have a frequency of at least 40 KHz, are transduced to electrical form, amplified with a relatively long time constant AGC, rectified and integrated during only the initial or leading edge portions of each pulse or burst. The resulting integrated analog signal values thus provided have relative magnitudes which may be displayed or otherwise processed to detect structural anomalies within the tire wall. If plural acoustic transmitters are utilized, they are preferably multiplexed such that only a single transducer is activated at a given time. Air leaks from the pressurized tire under test are also detected by detecting ultrasonic signals generated by escaping air.
