  • Patent number: 4441663
Abstract: To cinch a web end portion onto a web-free core, the core is driven by a core drive mechanism at an outer surface speed in excess of the speed at which the web end portion is fed to and threaded around the core. The core drive mechanism slips but continues to drive the core after the web end portion is cinched onto the core. After the web is wound to form a roll of predetermined diameter, the core drive mechanism is disengaged from the core to terminate the core drive. The outer surface of the partially built up roll further substantially simultaneously engages a builder roller which surface drives the roll. The core drive mechanism further comprises a gudgeon for engaging and rotatably driving the core, and a rotatably mounted drive wheel which is driven by the builder roller. The drive wheel is coupled to the gudgeon by a bearing for driving the web-free core at an outer core surface speed greater than the web speed.

  • Patent number: 4441665
Abstract: In an axially telescopic coil carrier comprising a plurality of parts for receiving threads or yarns, wherein carrier elements extending from a respective ring element extend lengthwise of the coil carrier, from a substantially cylindrical surface and are guided for displacement relatively to each other, reinforced sections are provided near the ring members in which adjacent carrier elements are connected to each other by circumferential supporting elements. The free ends of the carrier elements project axially beyond these reinforced sections. At least a part of the supporting element of each coil carrier part projects, at least in that zone of the reinforced section which is remote from the associated ring member, radially no more than into the surfaces on which the inner edges of the free ends of the carrier elements of the adjacent coil carrier part are disposed. The supporting elements thus form radially effective supports for these free ends of the carrier elements.

  • Patent number: 4441697
Abstract: An improved apparatus for recovering silver from a silver-containing solution. The device includes a container having influent and effluent passageways and a filler element composed of a metal above silver in the electromotive force series. The filler is disposed about an elongated core having an aperture in the side thereof. The filler may be formed of steel wire wound in the fashion of a spool about the core. One or more baffles may be situated within the filler to extend the length of the path taken by fluid flowing from the influent passageway through the filler to the core and then through the effluent passageway. Solution flowing through the filler reacts therewith so that silver is deposited within the container. An opening may be provided in the top of the container to permit viewing of the contents to determine whether the capacity of the container has been exhausted or whether the device is operating properly.

  • Patent number: 4441703
Abstract: A system converts the timing, spacing and orientation of newspapers from a high speed rotary press to conform with the precision spacing and speed requirements of subsequent on-line paper processing equipment such as inserters, addressers, counters and bundlers. The critical precision timing feature provides a rotary member and belt meeting tangentially in a converging path into which papers from the press are fed. They are stopped at spaced index notches in the rotary member for precise spacing between papers, which are released for conveyance at the closely controlled belt-rotary member speed. Conveyance through the belt-rotary member over an arc distance in friction contact assures that they are started along a continuous synchronized on-line transport path with the precise control of spacing and movement required by the on-line processing equipment.
