  • Patent number: 4442563
Abstract: In a machine for cement lasting side portions and the heel seat of shoes, the side portions are lasted by lasting rolls and the heel seat by wiper plates. For applying adhesive, each lasting roll has an associated nozzle which applies adhesive progressively in advance of its associated lasting roll. Furthermore, when the lasting rolls reach the point of termination of side lasting, they remain in pressing engagement with the shoe bottom, but their rotation is terminated, and in this condition the nozzles continue to apply adhesive in the heel seat region. This may be achieved by merely discharging adhesive from the stationary nozzles and allowing it to run into the heel seat, or alternatively the nozzles may track bodily into the heel seat. Thereafter, the lasting rolls and nozzles are retracted and heel seat wiping can take place. The invention may also be incorporated in a machine in which the whole of the shoe bottom is lasted.

The panel is biased into contact with the end nut in the nut guide, by the movable die, to install the nut in a panel. The moveable die is impelled toward the nut anchor by means of a two stage piston assembly having a first stage which supplies pressure limited to the elastic limit of the panel, and a second stage which supplies sufficient pressure to pierce the panel with the end nut. A sensor and switching mechanism is integrated with the apparatus controls to assure proper installation of the nut and prevent damage to the apparatus.

Abstract: An improved method of construction for thermal and acoustic insulation blankets is provided wherein a ceramic fiber thermal insulation core is cut along pattern lines and a acoustically insulating thin sheet of lead is molded in conformance with the shape of the ceramic fiber core. A thin, stainless steel foil/fiberglass cloth laminate is placed along the inner most surface of the insulation core so that the laminate serves as a barrier between the insulation core and the object being insulated. A silicone-rubber coated fiberglass cloth is wrapped around the insulation core and accompanying layers of insulation, and the fiberglass cloth is stitched with stainless steel staples. The blanket is then provided with an outer jacket comprised of a flexible knitted, stainless steel wire mesh to form a stocking containing the insulation blanket. The ends of the stocking are stitched with stainless steel staples.

  • Patent number: 4442586
Abstract: A joint is provided between one tube and another tube without the necessity of a heavy thick-walled metal coupling. The joint includes first and an optional second enlarged portions on a first tube with the second enlarged portion near an end of the second tube. A first shoulder is provided between the first enlarged portion and the main body of the first tube. A second annular shoulder is provided at the junction between the first and second enlarged portions. The end of the second tube slips into the first enlarged portion of the second tube and the second tube is then axially compressed so as to form an annular bead which acts against and is contained by the second enlarged portion of the first tube. This axial compression provides both a mechanical interconnection so that the tubes will not axially separate despite fluid pressure or mechanical force, and also provides a fluid tight seal at the annular bead and the second shoulder or second enlarged portion.
