  • Patent number: 4442670
Abstract: A closed-cycle heat engine consists of a gas-filled heat-insulated cylinder and a reciprocating piston. The cylinder space between the cylinder head and the piston face contains a spiral in the shape of flat interconnected discs, whereof the outermost disc at each end is heat-conductively attached to the cylinder head and the piston face respectively. About 10% of the discs at both ends of the spiral are of high heat-conductive material and about 80% of the discs inbetween are of a low heat-conductive sheet material. The cylinder head is permanently heated to a high temperature, and the piston is permanently cooled to a low temperature; the gas in the cylinder is alternately cooled and heated by the shifting movement of the discs, which are alternately closely packed adjacent the piston at the end of the compression stroke, and adjacent the cylinder head at the end of the expansion stroke. This shifting between the end positions is performed by an alternately directed gas stream.

  • Patent number: 4442675
Abstract: A working fluid in the gaseous state at some initial temperature and pressure is expanded polytropically to a resulting exhaust fluid (vapor and liquid) having some lower pressure at some lower temperature in order to produce useful work. The exhaust fluid is then, in a manner approaching constant enthalpy, compressed to the working fluid's nominal original high pressure. Thereafter, the fluid undergoes constant pressure heating to restore its initial state. Of the several methods described for achieving isenthalpic compression, the preferred method uses an isenthalpic compression apparatus which educts the exhaust fluid vapors into a throat located between a motive fluid inlet nozzle and a wider recompression outlet. After eduction, and entrainment into the motive fluid, the exhaust vapors are recompressed by the deceleration produced at the recompression outlet. Thereafter the working fluid and motive fluid are separated.

The evaporator assembly includes a stainless steel evaporator coil formed to provide parallel segments, plus support means of injection-molded plastic, which provides a central, planar web aligned with said tubing segments, plus transverse dividers which define the individual cube-forming regions. Low voltage power can be selectively applied to the evaporator coil to harvest the ice pieces via resistance heating, or warm water can be pumped through hollow passageways in the dividers.

Abstract: A stitch pressing device for flat knitting machine consists essentially of a combination of stitch pressing means and sub-presser means, both provided on a carriage. The forward end portion of a L-shaped stitch presser bar operative at same phase as a knitting lock on the carriage is adapted to enter into and retract from a gap between a pair of needle beds through movement involving a circular motion above a knockover comb. A sub-presser element which operates at a different phase from that of the stitch presser bar has its front portion constantly positioned in the gap between the needle beds and is urged downwardly deeper into the gap than the presser bar. A brush provided at substantially same phase as the horizontal portion of the stitch presser bar is adapted to retract from its operative position relative to needles in synchronism with the early phase of retraction of the presser bar so as for it not to damage the hair ends of the brush during such retracting movement.

Abstract: A weft thread insertion magazine in a warp knitting machine has a pair of separated forwarding chains driven by a drive arrangement. These forwarding chains each have equidistant holders for holding transversely placed weft threads. The drive arrangement can provide the forwarding chains with a lower speed than the normal speed at which weft threads are provided to the needles, that is, at a rate less than one thread per needle cycle. In particular the drive shaft of the warp knitting machine may be connected to the forwarding chains by means of a revolution reducing arrangement. A control arrangement regulates the separation of at least the first weft thread from the others following and the presentation of this first one into the vicinity of the knitting needles. This control arrangement comprises either a weft thread presenter, a weft thread deflector or a combination of both. The control mechanism only activates the weft thread presentation or deflection during a portion of the appropriate needle cycle.

Abstract: A slide fastener stringer has a warp-knit stringer tape including a pair of longitudinal warp-knit webs spaced transversely from each other with a wale-free region therebetween and interconnected by a connecting thread having substantially parallel spaced portions extending transversely across the wale-free region, thereby defining a plurality of substantially rectangular openings longitudinally along the wale-free region. The slide fastener stringer is attached to a knit fabric of wool yarn by a row of loops constituted by a course of the knit fabric and looped respectively around the parallel portions of the connecting thread. Alternatively, a row of loops extending through the knit fabric along a wale thereof into the rectangular openings are interlooped by chain stitches, thereby connecting the stringer and the knit article together. The loops and chain stitches are made of wool yarn that is substantially as stretchable as the knit fabric.
