  • Patent number: 4462168
Abstract: A drafting tool functioning as a variable angle straight edge comprises an elongated rectangular main body portion made of transparent material. The lower edge of this main body portion has a first straight edge extending a major portion of the length of the main body portion from one end toward the other end to terminate at a point between the two ends. This edge is spaced a first distance from the top edge of the tool. A second straight edge parallel to the top edge and the first straight edge extends from the other end of the tool toward the termination point and is spaced a greater distance from the top edge than is the spacing between the top edge and the first straight edge. The two edges are interconnected by an offset forming a notch to receive the point of a drafting instrument at the junction of the offset and the first straight edge.

  • Patent number: 4462169
Abstract: A web that is coated or imprinted on both surfaces has a straight stretch that emerges from a dryer enclosure in which the web is heated and extends to a chill roll around which a curved portion of the web is partially wrapped. A duct-like tunnel surrounding said stretch has its outer end near the chill roll. In a preferred embodiment, a nozzle at the outer end of the upper tunnel wall blows a blade-like jet against the curved portion of the web to force it into intimate engagement with the chill roll periphery and thus prevent accumulations of solvent vapor condensate thereon. Part of the jet air deflected by the web is guided inwardly along the web by the upper tunnel wall. Air outlets just above the lower tunnel wall, near its outer end and spaced at intervals across it, provide for inward air flow under the web. Practically all vapor emanating from the web after it leaves the dryer is thus driven into the dryer.

  • Patent number: 4462184
Abstract: A synthetic surface, such as artificial turf, rubberized asphalt, concrete composition, particulate mixtures and the like, is applied on top of a subsurface base system, which in turn is on top of a subgrade. A liquid impervious membrane is positioned between the subgrade and the base system. The base system comprises an upper layer of sand-containing particulate material in which liquid characteristically moves in the vertical direction and a lower layer of gravel in which liquid characteristically moves well in the horizontal direction as well as downwardly. The material of the upper layer does not significantly penetrate into the gravel. The base system has a non-rutting upper surface. The non-rutting surface is accomplished by planting grass, cutting the grass at least once, and then killing the grass. The synthetic surface is then applied. A conduit system is positioned in the lower gravel layer of the base system, and a water reservoir is established in the base system.

  • Patent number: 4462195
Abstract: A molded insulating insert of expanded polystyrene has a central section and hingedly connected side sections which are bendable toward each other to bring the insert to a U-shaped configuration for insertion in a building block cavity. The hinges are formed to provide resistance to full ninety degree bending of the side sections so that the insert side sections are inclined slightly outwardly in a free condition. On flexing inwardly and insertion in a block cavity the side sections tend to spring outwardly and frictionally grip the walls of the cavity. Lug-notch connection means frictionally retain the inserts in the U-shaped configuration and prevent dislodgement of sections in the event of hinge rupture. In molding the inserts, a transfer process is employed with the hinges partially formed in a hot mold and thereafter fully formed in a cold mold. The polystyrene is compressed in the hinge area to a higher density for hinge integrity. Density in the hinge area is approximately doubled.

  • Patent number: 4462202
Abstract: Apparatus for shaping liquid containing packages is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a take-off conveyor which includes a multitude of support parts which form a conveyor belt. The support parts are movable with respect to each other and point transversely outwardly from the conveyor path. A plunger moves out from the surface of the support part towards a side wall of the package to indent the same at a certain portion of the package formation cycle. A switch cam plate or the like causes movement of the plunger between a contact position in which the plunger contacts and indents a portion of the package and another position in which the plunger does not engage the package. This application is a continuation, of application Ser. No. 198,161, filed Oct. 17, 1980, now abandoned.

  • Patent number: 4462204
Abstract: The invention is a cooling airflow modulation system for use on gas turbine engines. The system utilizes one or more circumferential manifolds for collecting and providing a source of high-pressure cooling air to hot turbine parts. The cooling air is directed to the manifolds through valved passageways that collect compressor discharge air and direct that air radially inwardly and axially downstream to manifold locations. Multiple passageways aand manifolds provide a means for maintaining pressure in the hot turbine parts while cooling airflow volume is being modulated through selected manifold and passageway combinations.

  • Patent number: 4462206
Abstract: The pressure vessel of the gas turbine-steam power plant is provided with a recuperator and a heat exchanger in order to reduce the temperature of the hot flue gas before separating out gas-entrained particles. The dust separator is connected to the recuperator on a secondary side so that the hot gas can be reheated for delivery to the gas turbine. By cooling the flue gas before entering the separator, use can be made of electrostatic dust filters or cloth filters.

  • Patent number: 4462207
Abstract: A gas turbine engine terminates at its rear in a jet pipe (14) having a fixed area nozzle (15). The engine is provided with one or more target type deflector doors (18) which in a first position constitute a rearward extension of the jet pipe (14) and define an effective exhaust nozzle (19), downstream of the nozzle (15) of the jet pipe 18, which is of smaller area than that of the jet pipe. The door, or doors 18, are movable from the first position to a second position where the nozzle 15 of the jet pipe 14 is exposed and constitutes the effective exhaust nozzle of the engine. In the second position the door, or doors 18, lie predominantly transverse to the length of the jet pipe 14 to redirect the hot gas efflux from the jet pipe 14 and reduce the forward thrust produced by the engine.

  • Patent number: 4462211
Abstract: A wave energy harvesting apparatus includes a float which rises and falls with wave movements across the surface of a body of water. A hollow tube having a turbine located inside thereof is located vertically downward from the float and is connected to the float by connecting members. The hollow tube is positioned at a depth which is essentially displaced sufficient from the surface of the body of water so as not to be influenced by vertical water movement associated with the waves moving across the surface of the body of water. The tube, however, is moved upwardly and downwardly through the water at that depth in response to movement of the float by the waves on the surface of the water. Movement of the tube upwardly and downwardly at the depth causes rotation of the turbine located in the tube, with the turbine in turn rotating the connecting member to transfer the rotational motion to the surface, wherein this rotational motion is then utilized to drive a generator or the like.

  • Patent number: 4462212
Abstract: A system for providing thermal energy output at intermediate levels below about 120.degree. C. uses both a conventional heat source input and an ambient heat source input to the hot and cold ends, respectively, of a Vuilleumier cycle machine. While converting thermal energy to work in both a heat engine process and a heat pump process, an intermediate working chamber integral with both processes is arranged to provide thermal output at the desired intermediate level. By maintaining the pressure ratio within predetermined limits and observing a number of temperature relationships desirably high coefficients of performance are provided with useful levels of output in a reliable system having long operating life.
