  • Patent number: 4470264
Abstract: A transportable self-contained life support apparatus steadily reduces in temperature whole blood collected from donors to a predetermined temperature range. The whole blood is kept live by maintaining the temperature of the blood within such range through conductive heat transfer to an adjacent coolant. The coolant, in a frozen state and having a freezing temperature just below the predetermined range, absorbs heat commensurate to/with its latent heat of fusion and precludes temperature excursion of the blood until all of the coolant has become liquid. Similarly, platelets, extracted from the blood, can be maintained at the predetermined temperature range during storage and transport. Over chilling is precluded by limiting the low temperature of the coolant to its freezing temperature and a life destroying temperature rise is self-evident by and can only occur after a complete change in the state of the coolant.

  • Patent number: 4470280
Abstract: In an apparatus for forming leak-proof joints between tubes and a tube sheet by the internal application of hydraulic swaging pressure, the flow of relatively low pressure fluid from a pressure source to an intensifier is permitted or interrupted by a control valve. During a prefill period, a prefill valve causes the low pressure fluid to bypass the low pressure input side of the intensifier and flow directly to the high pressure side and then to a mandrel. Thereafter, the low pressure fluid is caused to enter the low pressure side of the intensifier to increase the pressure in the mandrel during a swaging period. A pressurization sensor, which is connected to the input and output sides of the prefill valve, contains a piston which is movable in response to the difference in the pressures at these two points to produce a termination signal which, after a delay, actuates the control signal at the end of the swaging period.

  • Patent number: 4470282
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of rotary piercing in seamless tube manufacturing under a rotary piercing process, such as Mannesmann mandrel mill process. Rotary piercing operation is carried out by employing a rotary piercing mill having a pair of cone-shaped main rolls adapted to cooperate with a plug for rotary piercing and disc rolls disposed in opposed relation between the pair of main rolls and adapted to press hollow shell on the surface thereof. In this method of rotary piercing, the main rolls have feed and cross angles designed to meet certain conditions individually and in combination. The method makes it possible to carry out rotary piercing of less hot workable and/or extremely hard-to-work materials, that is, high-alloy steel billets, without surface torsional deformation and circumferential shear deformation. Thus, it is possible to manufacture high quality tubes of high-alloy steels free from outside seams and inside bore defects.

  • Patent number: 4470293
Abstract: An electro-mechanical impacting device (10) for testing the bonding of foam insulation (22) to metal (26). The device lightly impacts foam insulation (22) attached to metal (26) to determine whether the insulation (22) is properly bonded to the metal (26) and to determine the quality of the bond. A force measuring device, preferably a load cell (12) mounted on the impacting device, measures the force of the impact and the duration of the time the hammer head (16) is actually in contact with the insulation (22). This information is transmitted as an electric signal (20) to other elements of the invention's associated system (not part of this invention) which are capable of conditioning the signal and evaluating it electronically in order to provide a visual display on a video screen. This allows an operator to make decisions relating to bonding and the quality of bonding.

  • Patent number: 4470294
Abstract: This invention relates to a new method and new apparatus for determining fluid mass flowrate and density. In one aspect of the invention, the fluid is passed through a straight cantilevered tube in which transient oscillation has been induced, thus generating Coriolis damping forces on the tube. The decay rate and frequency of the resulting damped oscillation are measured, and the fluid mass flowrate and density are determined therefrom. In another aspect of the invention, the fluid is passed through the cantilevered tube while an electrically powered device imparts steady-state harmonic excitation to the tube. This generates Coriolis tube-damping forces which are dependent on the mass flowrate of the fluid. Means are provided to respond to incipient flow-induced changes in the amplitude of vibration by changing the power input to the excitation device as required to sustain the original amplitude of vibration. The fluid mass flowrate and density are determined from the required change in power input.

Abstract: An automatic pipe testing unit adapted to be mounted on a goose-neck trailer and comprises a longitudinally extending rectangular tubing main trailer frame. A test fluid holding tank mounted on the frame has a screened opening to receive test fluid which is drained from each joint after it has been tested, so that the fluid can be continuously recirculated. Also included are hydraulically operated two lift arms and two pipe advance arms, the lift arms each having an integrally attached bevelled finger plate onto which a plurality of pipes can be rolled. The lift arms lift the pipes from one point to a slanted storage area on the top of the unit and herefrom automatically by operation of the hydraulic pipe advance arms, the pipe to be tested is advanced into a pipe gripping vise for testing. The hydraulically operated pipe advance arms can then be operated to eject the pipe therefrom into another area for draining the pipe of all of the test fluid so that the test fluid can be recirculated for subsequent use.

Abstract: A fuel gauge is so designed that a fuel level signal having a signal value responsive to the fuel amount in a fuel tank is averaged over time intervals which vary according to whether the liquid level of the fuel in the tank is stable or unstable and a fuel quantity is calculated and displayed according to the averaged value. The stable or unstable condition of the fuel level is discriminated in accordance with vehicle speed, the "on" or "off" position of an ignition switch or the like. Accordingly, when the fuel level is unstable, the signal value is averaged over a time interval which is longer than that used when the fuel level is stable so that the response of display to variation of the fuel level is improved.
