  • Patent number: 4478024
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for aligning the slices in stacks of sliced food products and for loading the stacks into container cavities. Stacks are received sequentially from a supply conveyor onto a stack support surface, where the stacks are detained either by friction with the support surface or by a stack catcher. A stack positioning member movable along the support surface pushes the stacks into engagement with a stack former for aligning the slices. Simultaneously, the stack positioning member retards movement of the next upstream stack on the supply conveyor so that the stack comes to rest on the support surface, and then pushes the previously aligned stack to a downstream pick-up station for loading into a container cavity. Each stack is removed from the loading station by a gripper assembly which pivots between the loading station and the container.

  • Patent number: 4478035
Abstract: A broken end piecing up apparatus for ring spinning frames having a servicing assembly propelled along the spinning frame. This servicing assembly comprises a pressurized housing which contains the mechanisms. An optical scanner is provided for detecting the absence of yarn on the corresponding bobbin and provision is made for positioning the apparatus in front of the spindle where the absence of yarn has been detected. The apparatus has a mechanism which then stops the broken end spindle and rotates it in the unwinding direction, withdrawing and picking up this broken end from the bobbin. Then a predetermined length of yarn is pulled out from this bobbin and fed through the corresponding ring traveller. The broken end is cut, combed and fed to the roving issuing from the drafting systems and the piecing up operation of both takes place. Then the servicing assembly moves on to detect a further absence of yarn.

  • Patent number: 4478045
Abstract: Combustors [22] which employ such features as rotary cup fuel atomizers and the latter in conjuction with CIVIC combustion to enhance flame performance, to produce efficient combustion over a wide operating range, and to eliminate the problems typically encountered in liquid fueled combustors, especially as they are scaled down in size. A porous or perforate barrier [180] can be used to keep large fuel drops from reaching the combustion zone [124] of the combustor. Also, an air buffer system can be employed to keep fuel from backing up to the bearings [32] by which the rotary cup [98] of the atomizer is rotatably supported, and a fuel supply line [56] with a strategically located orifice [176] can be provided to effect an interaction between fuel discharged therefrom and the buffer air. This keeps the film of fuel formed on the atomizer cup [98] from being disrupted and also keeps the buffer air from penetrating to an inner hot gas recirculation zone [130] in the combustor.

A method is provided for dissipating the thermal energy of the fan motor to the indoor air stream when the heat exchanger is in the heating mode of operation and for dissipating such thermal energy to a heat sink when the indoor unit is operated in the cooling mode of operation such that the fan energy may either be added to the amount of heat energy being supplied to the enclosure or may be dissipated outside the enclosure such that it is not added to the cooling load of the enclosure when the system is operated in the cooling mode.

Abstract: In the take-down mechanism the plurality of coaxial roller sections (14.1 . . . 14.x) of the take-down roller are moveable on a common shaft (16) and adapted to be coupled separately and selectively with a driving means (17/18) that is to say independently of one another. A return rotary movement of the roller sections is prevented by one-way clutches constituted by loop springs (35,36). The common shaft (16) can be turned for adjustment of all the roller sections in common. Annular guards (28) prevent threads intruding between the individual roller sections (14). (FIG. 1).

  • Patent number: 4478062
Abstract: A system is provided for measuring the shape of sheet stock within a rolling mill. The system includes a shape sensing roll including a plurality of roll segments. Each segment includes a magnetic bearing, the stators thereof being mounted to a stationary shaft. The bearing rotors are mounted in a steel ring which contacts the strip to be measured. Each roll segment is suspended by a magnetic bearing which is free to react to the loading placed thereon, independent of adjacent segments. Since the magnetic bearing system automatically regulates the power supplied to the electromagnets of the respective bearings to maintain their concentric positions, changes to the power inputs are a direct indication of the magnitude of the loading thereon.

  • Patent number: 4478064
Abstract: A process for rolling a metal strip for reducing its thickness and for increasing the maximum reduction attainable per pass using a cooperative type rolling mill comprises applying differential separating forces to the metal strip without changing the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the rolls. By doing this, the maximum strip tension and the forward tension required to pull the strip through the mill may be reduced. The maximum strip tension and the required forward tension force may further be reduced by driving at least one work roll at a desired value of torque as well as applying differential separating forces. The cooperative type rolling mill uses a roll spacing arrangement to space at least some of the rolls for reducing the separating force applied to the metal strip at selected roll bites. In addition, individual drive motors to drive the work rolls at desired torque values may be utilized.
