  • Patent number: 4487001
Abstract: The lower end portion of a magazine for parallel cigarettes or like rod-shaped articles contains a horizontal grid of parallel rods which divide the outlet opening of the lower end portion into parallel passages wherein the cigarettes descend into an empty tray therebelow. When the tray is filled (such filling takes place while the tray descends, either continuously or stepwise), the passages are blocked by rod-like closing members which are parallel to the rods of the grid and are movable from inoperative positions behind the rods of the grid to intercepting positions in or above the passages. The closing members are oscillated and/or vibrated to prevent jamming of passages and/or bridging of cigarettes above the grid. The mechanism for moving the closing members between inoperative and intercepting positions employs a pneumatic motor or an electromagnet which can shift a common carrier for the closing members. The mechanism is actuated in automatic response to completed filling of a tray.

  • Patent number: 4487026
Abstract: A control device for an absorption system interrupts a pneumatic signal controlling the demand for chilled water by utilizing a single port direct acting controller to which is fed a chilled water return temperature signal. The single port direct acting controller provides a continuous signal to control the heating source utilized in providing the chilled water as a real time function of the temperature of the chilled water returning from an associated cooled building, as well as the internal controls of the absorption system. Thus, the control device provides an optimal decision value, factoring all dynamic operating variations which affect chilled water return temperature, for the control of the heating source utilized in providing chilled water, thereby reducing the fuel consumption of the absorption refrigeration system. Alternatively, a dual port direct acting controller is added, to which are fed an outdoor air humidity signal and an outdoor air temperature signal.

  • Patent number: 4487028
Abstract: A control for a variable capacity reciprocating compressor water chiller system. A microprocessor connected to monitor return and supply fluid temperature sensors in the system is programmed to vary the compressor capacity in response to the deviation of the return and supply chilled water temperatures from desired values. The control determines these desired values as a function of predetermined full load return, supply, and reference temperature setpoints, and as a function of the relative loading of the chiller system. The control also functions to selectively offset the chilled water temperatures in one of three control modes. If zone temperature sensors are connected to the control, the offset is a function of the deviation of the weighted average zone temperature from a setpoint. The second control mode allows offset as a function of the outdoor ambient air temperature, and the third, as a function of a temporary setpoint.

In the gas mode of operation, a monitor electrode positioned above the gas burner automatically senses the absence of the burner flame and commences a restart sequence to reignite the burner. If reignition fails or the burner cannot be ignited within a predetermined time, further ignition attempts are inhibited and an indicator lamp on the front of the refrigerator enclosure above the freezer door provides a visual indication that cooling is not being supplied to the refrigerator. Different colored visual indicators are also provided to show that the refrigerator is being operated by gas or electricity. In another embodiment, the refrigerator may be selectively operated from alternating current, direct current or flammable gas, with colored indicator lamps showing the type of power source used.

  • Patent number: 4487031
Abstract: A method and apparatus for effecting capacity control of a compressor are described. A compressor having multiple capacity steps is utilized. A control valve being connected to both the compressor discharge pressure and the compressor suction pressure as well as heating and cooling pressure sensors is utilized. The control valve acts to connect appropriate pressure to the pressure sensors such that a variation in pressure level beyond a predetermined range effects a pressure sensor change indicating a need to change the capacity level of the compressor. Upon the capacity level of the compressor being changed the control valve is cycled to apply an opposite pressure level to the pressure sensor to reset the pressure sensor such that the pressure sensor may again detect a change in the pressure level to indicate a further need for a capacity change in the compressor.

  • Patent number: 4487034
Abstract: The invention is an energy-efficient all-electric environmental control system (70). The system includes a cabin compressor (16) and a Freon compressor (14), both of which are commonly driven by a two-speed electric motor (12). The motor (12) operates at low speed at low altitudes and on the ground to drive the Freon compressor (14). Freon fluid then cools the electric motor (12) and the cabin (18) and avionics (56) by means of the evaporator/dehumidifier systems (72) and (74), respectively. At high altitudes the electric motor (12) runs at high speed to drive the cabin compressor (16) to provide pressurization for the cabin (18). In this operation mode, the Freon compressor can be disconnected via an electromagnetic clutch (48).The ECS (70) also includes a liquid Freon pump (52) which can be utilized when the Freon compressor is disconnected or bypassed to circulate liquid Freon to cool the electric motor (12) and to circulate through the evaporators (38) and (76).
