  • Patent number: 4516366
Abstract: A seal for the gap between the edge of a building opening and the back end of a vehicle driven up to the opening. A covering of flexible material is arranged between a downwardly open U-shaped frame serving to hold the sealing apron on the one hand, and the building or the profiled members fastened thereto on the other hand. For the purpose of being able to quickly assemble and replace this covering, and also for the purpose of being able to balance or equalize stresses within the covering, the edges of the covering are inserted or drawn into longitudinal grooves of the profiled members located on the building and on the U-shaped frame. The edges are folded-over or doubled and surround a core. The edges are located in undercut longitudinal grooves, and in particular in such a manner that sliding movements of these edges are also possible during operational use of the seals.

  • Patent number: 4516388
Abstract: A hydraulically-actuated bedknife alignment and positioning mechanism which uses the hydraulic power source to precisely adjust the distance between the blade of a reel-type lawn mower and the bedknife for proper cutting action. The system includes a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure, a hydraulic cylinder (mounted to the frame of the mower) which houses a piston connected by a linkage arm to the bedknife that is biased relative to the reel blade and attached pivotally to the frame. During adjustment, the cylinder is pressurized, forcing the piston to move the bedknife into contact with the blades of the mower. When the hydraulic pressure is removed, the biasing force pushes the bedknife away from the reel blade, but a hydraulic locking valve in the actuating cylinder line limits precisely how far the bedknife is biased away from the reel blade before sealing shut, effecting proper distance setting. The hydraulic adjustment may be remotely actuated by the operator of the mower.

Abstract: In apparatus for picking up and conveying cut crop, a conveying rotor is mounted on a mobile frame which is moved over the ground, and is rotated in a manner such as to pick up previously cut crop lying on the ground and to convey the crop upwardly and rearwardly over the rotor and along a passage of the mobile frame. The rotor is a brush-like structure having a multiplicity of stiff, resilient, elongate elements which are yieldable in response to engagement with the crop but are sufficiently stiff to penetrate at least part of a stream of crop conveyed by the rotor. The elements pick-up and convey crop by an action including relative movement between the conveying elements and the crop engaged thereby. The elements are arranged in tufts of element supported and protected at the base by a sleeve, and the tufts are spaced apart in the direction of the rotor axis. In other arrangements the elements may be arranged with individual elements spaced apart in the direction of the rotor.

The spheres or particles are disposed in an annular volume defined by two concentric, thin-wall, low thermal conductivity conduits. This foam filled insert provides thermal insulation and significantly reduces the formation of coolant vapor convection currents in the penetration which would otherwise significantly increase the rate of coolant evaporation from the cryostat. The insert is constructed so that the foam particles are ejected from the penetration upon the buildup of excessive internal pressure. The insert has also preferably one or more string-like lengths of sealing material disposed in a helical pattern about the outer one of the concentric conduits. Accordingly, when this insert is placed within a third conduit, a helical coolant vapor path is formed for insert cooling and exterior ventilation.

  • Patent number: 4516405
Abstract: A cryostat for use in magnets for NMR medical diagnostic imaging includes inner and outer vessels suspended by sets of at least three low thermal conductivity ties. The positioning of the tie anchoring points, particularly on the interior vessel, are selected in accordance with the present invention to preclude increased stresses in the supporting ties that occur as a result of thermal contraction. This configuration is particularly advantageous in that it permits the utilization of ties having smaller cross-sectional areas than would otherwise be required. The reduced cross-sectional area requirement is also therefore seen to increase the thermal isolation of the interior cryostat vessel. Cryostat vessels may be nested within one another.

  • Patent number: 4516410
Abstract: A knitwork drawing device which has a hollow piston rod movable axially through one of the needle cylinders in a double cylinder circular knitting machine, and a knitwork retaining member arranged at the height of the stitch-formation area and rotatable with the needle cylinders. The hollow piston rod is secured to a fluid-operated piston slidable in a cylindrical chamber coaxial with the needle cylinders. Tensioning of the knitwork is effected by leaving the hollow piston rod to rest on the knitwork being knitted, which is held at its initial portion by the retaining member internally of the hollow piston rod and by the needles which continue to knit externally of the hollow piston rod. The whole stroke of the piston and hollow piston rod is thus the half of the whole length of the knitwork and the axial dimension of the knitting machine is considerably reduced.

  • Patent number: 4516415
Abstract: A steering lock for an automobile includes a key cylinder, rotatable and axially movable upon rotation of a key inserted in the key cylinder, into locking engagement with a locking bar to lift the latter clear of engagement with a steering shaft. When the key cylinder is turned back and the key is pulled out, the key cylinder is moved back out of locking engagement with the locking bar, which then locks the steering shaft. The returning movement of the key cylinder depresses a spring-loaded control member into a key slot in the key cylinder. When the key cylinder is fully moved back, the spring-loaded control member is pulled out of the key slot. With such an arrangement, the key cylinder can directly engage the locking bar to displace the latter into a retracted position or allow the same to move to a locking position.
