  • Patent number: 4528821
Abstract: An adaptive demand defrost control system controls the length of an interval between defrost operations in accordance with the number and duration of compartment door-openings, the duration of a previous defrost operation as corrected by the temperature of the evaporator prior to defrost, and the length of time the compressor has been energized. A count is stored which is varied according to a decrementing schedule, with the decrementing schedule in turn being based upon a comparison of the corrected defrost duration with either a desired defrost duration or a range of desired defrost durations. A defrost operation is initiated when the count reaches a predetermined value. An alternative embodiment of the invention develops an indication of the ambient humidity and controls humidity-dependent apparatus in accordance with the indication.

  • Patent number: 4528822
Abstract: A heat pump refrigeration circuit utilizes an indoor heat exchange unit, an outdoor heat exchange unit and a refrigerant-liquid heat exchange unit all connected serially to accomplish space heating, space cooling, liquid heating or simultaneous space cooling and liquid heating. A refrigerant charge reservoir is selectively incorporated into the circuit to control the refrigerant charge in the two liquid heating modes of operation by removing excess liquid refrigerant from the circuit. In the two non-liquid heating modes of operation the reservoir is isolated from all but the suction port of the compressor within the circuit. Liquid refrigerant previously deposited in the reservoir during a liquid heating mode of operation is vaporized and returned to the circuit for use in the selected non-liquid heating mode of operation. Refrigerant charge control is thereby maintained in all modes of operation without the necessity of evacuating an inactive heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4528823
Abstract: A heat pump apparatus has a main refrigerant circuit constituted by a closed loop including a compressor, condenser, gas-liquid separator, pressure reducer such as an expansion valve, and an evaporator. A shunting refrigerant line having a compressor, condenser and a pressure reducer means shunts from the gaseous phase portion of the gas-liquid separator of the main refrigerant circuit and merges in the evaporator of the main refrigerant circuit. The shunting refrigerant line may be constructed to have one or more compression stages.

Abstract: Apparatus for efficiently preparing frozen drinks, such as frozen soft drinks and frozen cocktails, is disclosed. The apparatus includes apparatus for preparing frozen, semi-solid ice "slush". The output of the slush-making apparatus is delivered gradually to a blender cup in which additional ingredients of the drink have been added. The use of the slush rather than solid ice, and the gradual addition of the slush, prevents burn-out of the blender motor while reducing drink preparation time and ensuring a thorough blending of the drink ingredients.

  • Patent number: 4528826
Abstract: A refrigerant fluid accumulator and charging apparatus for vapor-compression refrigeration systems comprising a pressure vessel having an interior liquid/vapor separation chamber, a liquid reservoir, a refrigerant inlet conduit, a primary refrigerant vapor outlet conduit and a secondary refrigerant outlet conduit in communication with a sump portion of the reservoir and with the primary outlet conduit. The secondary refrigerant outlet conduit includes a sight glass for observation of the flow of fluid from the sump into the compressor suction line. Refrigeration systems may be accurately charged with refrigerant fluid by operating the system at design load conditions with the accumulator and charging apparatus interposed in the refrigerant circuit between the evaporator and the compressor and by venting refrigerant fluid from the system until the flow of fluid through the secondary outlet conduit changes from liquid or mixed phase to substantially the vapor phase.

Abstract: A drum defining a center axis is journalled from a support for rotation about its center axis through the utilization of resilient means permitting the axis and drum to gyrate about a center position of the axis responsive to dynamic imbalance of the drum during rotation thereof. The drum includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced liquid-passing openings and a plurality of liquid receptacles are mounted from the drum for receiving liquid therein from the openings. The receptacles are mounted from the drum for shifting between liquid retaining positions and liquid dumping positions and stationary receptacle position shifting structure is mounted from the support and the receptacles are mounted on the drum for normal disposition in either the liquid receiving positions or the liquid dumping positions.

  • Patent number: 4528828
Abstract: A padlock comprises a lock casing and a basically U-formed shackle slideable therein between a closed and an open position. The padlock has two legs of different length, each provided with a locking notch. The longer leg has a head that is somewhat thicker than the general part of the leg for keeping the shackle engaged in the casing in its open position. There is also a cylinder lock mechanism, operable by a key, and locking members coacting with a guiding portion of a turnable member of the cylinder lock mechanism for locking both legs of the shackle to the lock casing. The locking members are movable dependent on the angular position of the guiding portion of the cylinder lock mechanism between a locking and a releasing position. The releasing position allows the shorter shackle leg to completely slide out from the lock casing.

  • Patent number: 4528829
Abstract: A key retaining multiple lock mechanism, suitable for parcel lockers and other structures and capable of being mounted on doors for such structures, has a first lock with a first key trapping tumbler mechanism. The first lock has a strike-engaging tongue and a spring loaded bolt cooperating with a second lock dead bolt structure. The dead bolt is operated by a second key to extend and retract the dead bolt. When extended, the dead bolt compresses the spring-loaded bolt when the mechanism is in a locked condition and acts as a stop when the mechanism is in the unlocked condition, preventing relocking of the structure without first retracting the dead bolt with the second key.

  • Patent number: 4528831
Abstract: A machine for coiling wire to form any one of a number of different size, type and configuration of coil spring and comprising a machine frame in which is mounted a driveshaft, intermediate shaft, camshaft, and feed roller shafts. At a work station of the machine appropriate coiling dies are supported along with one or more cutters mounted adjacent thereto. The wire is fed to the work station via a pair of feed rollers driven at variable speed, preferably by an elliptical gear drive, wherein the feed speed is at a maximum during coiling and decreases to a minimum feed speed for cutting. Wire feed is synchronously interrupted at cutting by means of a cam arrangement that briefly disengaged the feed rollers. This variable speed drive enables a high duty cycle of operation and also enables start up (feed rollers engaging) at reduced speed so as to minimize wire distortion.
