  • Patent number: 4534152
Abstract: Packaging of certain products like cheese is usually done in a vacuum without the presence of heat. Heretofore, a first vacuum was necessary to knit the curds together and to compact the cheese. A second vacuum was then employed to remove air which returned to the package. The present method eliminates the need for the second vacuum. A heat sealable package, containing cheese, and having a tortuous vent passage is subjected to a vacuum. As a full vacuum is achieved, air within the chamber and the package is exhausted. When the chamber is returned to atmospheric pressure, the tortuous seal collapses to form a temporary seal. At the same time, the plastic bag collapses around the cheese which causes the curds to knit together, and compact the cheese. While still in the sealed condition, a permanent heat seal is made across the tortuous vent passage.

  • Patent number: 4534153
Abstract: A system for the handling of lightweight plastic containers into and through a case-packing operation wherein the containers are moved in a single line onto a conveyor where a diverting guide will move the containers into a multiple lane receiver. The multiple lane receiver is rotatable about its longitudinal axis through a 90.degree. angle, either with the container bottoms facing to the left or facing to the right. On the left side of the receiver, a carton-handling arrangement tips a carton toward the containers which are held in the receiver. A pusher mechanism moves the containers, as a group, from the receiver into the carton, and the carton is then returned to its original position.

  • Patent number: 4534154
Abstract: The present method comprises the steps of positioning a bag on a supporting surface, the bag consisting of flexible film material such as plastic laminate. The bag is so constructed that its side walls are sealed along their peripheries, with one end having an unsealed portion. A filling hole is provided in one side wall of the unsealed bag portion. The bag before filling is flat, or in other words it is not inflated with air or other gas. The side walls of the unsealed portion (preferably a corner of the bag) are then separated to form an opening into which means is introduced to effect sealed registration of a filling head with the bag filling hole. A measured amount of liquid is then delivered through the filling opening to fill the bag, and after the bag has been filled the unsealed end portion of the bag is heat sealed to form a completely sealed bag. Before filling, it is desirable to evacuate air from the bag by applying suction.

  • Patent number: 4534156
Abstract: The invention is applied to an apparatus for filling storage boxes with lemons or other articles. The articles are first diverted from a conveyor into a measuring and collecting bin. When articles fill the bin to a level which will fill a box beneath the apparatus, a photoswitch stops the conveyor to prevent overfilling of the bin. The photoswitch also tilts a chute at the bottom of the bin whereby the entire contents of the bin are emptied into the box. Although the level of articles in the bin falls below the beam which operates the photoswitch, an internal time delay in the photoswitch holds the conveyor in stopped position and it also holds the chute in tilted position until sufficient time has passed for the box to be filled. Immediately thereafter, the chute is returned to upright position, the conveyor is restarted, and an unfilled box takes the position of the filled box.

  • Patent number: 4534174
Abstract: Apparatus and method for handling geothermal brine containing high non-condensible gas concentrations. The brine is directed into a pre-flash chamber where a vapor fraction is separated from a liquid fraction, the vapor fraction including steam and a non-condensible gas. The vapor fraction is directed into and through a reboiler in countercurrent flow relationship to a condensate. This action causes the steam of the vapor fraction to be stripped from the non-condensible gas and also causes the condensate to be heated by the steam. The non-condensible gas flows out of the reboiler to a gas expander collection station, or to the atmosphere while the condensate flows to a flash chamber where it flashes to obtain clean steam for driving a work producing apparatus, such as a turbine. The condensate from the flash chamber is returned by a pump to the condensate inlet of the reboiler to form a closed system.

  • Patent number: 4534180
Abstract: An absorption refrigeration system incorporating a novel solution flow control is disclosed. The solution flow control includes a sensor, preferably in the form of a float which senses the level of the solution in the absorber of the system. The signal from the level sensor is utilized to position a valve for controlling the flow of weak solution in such a manner that the solution flow increases/decreases as the level of the solution in the absorber decreases/increases. The solution control not only provides improved efficiency of the refrigeration system but also protects the system from the risk of crystallization of the solution. In one embodiment, a compact solution control is fully enclosed by an air-tight shell of the absorber and comprises a float, a rod mechanically and drivingly coupling the float with a solution valve so that the buoyancy of the float directly positions the valve. This arrangement does not need to meet the requirement of having an air tight structure and assures a long life in use.

  • Patent number: 4534181
Abstract: An improved cooling system includes a vapor compression refrigeration loop made up of a compressor, an expansion valve, an evaporator and a condenser. A cool air fan blows air past the cool surfaces of the evaporator. The cooled air is directed to the interior of the structure by a cool air duct. A thermostat actuates the cool air fan and the compressor when the temperature in the structure rises above a selected value. Recognizing that cooling systems are oversized, and thus run inefficiently during normal operation, a compressor cycling switch is used to cycle the compressor on and off during the cool demand cycles according to the air temperature in the cool air duct. This increases the efficiency of the system by reducing back pressure on the compressor and reducing icing of the system.
