  • Patent number: 4534264
Abstract: The barrel of a firearm is provided with side ports, on opposite sides, adjacent the muzzle. The positioning of the ports, longitudinally of the barrel, is determined according to the pressures of the explosion gases, and the acceleration of the projectile. The acceleration of the projectile occurs in response to, and during, the increase in volume of the explosion gases. This occurs only in a small portion of the length of the barrel, at the breech end, and after that position, the gases decrease in pressure. The recoil occurs after the projectile leaves the barrel and the gases leave the barrel. The side ports are adjacent the muzzle, in the region where the gases have decreased in pressure, and are dimensioned to let nearly all the gases escape by the time the projectile leaves the barrel; they are arranged diametrically opposite each other, and they cancel each other, and greatly reduce and nearly eliminate, the recoil.

  • Patent number: 4534272
Abstract: A rotating cylinder engine having a stationary housing surrounding a rotating cylinder block, which cylinder block rotates unitarily but eccentrically with an output shaft. The housing rotatably mounts both the shaft and the cylinder block. The cylinder block has four equally spaced cylinders therein with each cylinder reciprocally receiving therein a piston. The inner ends of each piston are equipped with abutting surfaces and a roller arrangement is mounted cooperatively with each piston and for unitary rotation with the output shaft. The rollers engage the inner end of the abutting surface on the piston to facilitate relative translatory movement between the pistons and the output shaft which occur during eccentric movement of the cylinder block and the output shaft while transfering driving force between the piston and the output shaft. Passage means in the housing allows pressure fluid therein to flow from a source external of the housing to impose driving loads upon the pistons.

  • Patent number: 4534287
Abstract: Hammer actuators are mounted on a support. Instead of moving the entire massive support to traverse the paper for each line, only a low inertia member, which positions the impact ends of the print wires, is moved. The internal structure of the member facilitates minor curvature of the print wires as the member moves. The member is rapidly reciprocated relative to the support, but "dwells" for a short time at each extreme to permit indexing of the paper. • Patent number: 4534288
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for indicating and correcting misregister of plural overlapping images produced by a multicolor press. A register indicia (FIG. 3) is used comprising two overlapping sets of parallel lines (R and C), each set being formed in a known position relative to a corresponding one of the images whereby the positional relationship between the sets of lines varies with the positional relationship of the images. The extent of overlap of the sets of lines is dependent upon displacement of the sets of lines in a direction transverse to the lines, whereby the percentage of nonprint area in the register indicia is dependent upon register of the overlapping images in that transverse direction. The percentage of nonprint area is detected by illuminating the register indicia area and measuring the extent to which the area reflects the light. The resulting signal is used to control the register adjustment mechanisms of the multicolor press.

Each printer assembly includes a bearing member and a dispensing member, the bearing member having a tip of narrow dimension and the dispensing member having a film-forming edge. Each bearing member is biased so that its tip rides in contact with the surface of the roller to establish a positional reference for adjustment of the dispensing member. An adjusting screw mounted on the bearing member and engaging the dispensing member is adapted to retract the dispensing member a small distance rearwardly of the tip of the bearing member to thereby determine the zonal thickness of the ink film formed on the surface of the roller by the dispensing member.

  • Patent number: 4534291
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for washing elements of a printing press. In accordance with the method, the press and the ink supply pump are operated during the washing operation. Wash liquid is delivered to the press fountain and passed through the press in a cocurrent ink flow direction while effecting washing of those elements of the press normally contacted with ink. Wash liquid is also passed in a countercurrent ink flow direction through the ink supply line, and an ink filter if present, and introduced into the ink pump through its discharge line while it is being operated in order to wash the internal surfaces of the pump and ink supply line as well as the filter, if present. Wash liquid is also applied to the external surfaces of the pump. In all cases, the wash liquid is discharged after a single washing contact without recirculation.

  • Patent number: 4534292
Abstract: A self-destruct device for the detonators of spin-stabilized projectiles, wherein a generally crescent-shaped locking lever is pivotably supported on a circular disc-shaped plate which extends perpendicular to the longitudinal projectile axis. In its extended position, the locking lever engages below a spring-loaded percussion sleeve arranged so as to be axially displaceable on the firing pin which, in turn, is latched by means of the hook on a tripping lever which can be swung outwardly against the force of a spring engaging therewith during firing as a result of the centrifugal force exerted thereon caused by the projectile spin. The arm of the tripping lever which sustains the centrifugal force is subordinated in its extended position to a safety support which is fastened on the plate and, subsequent to the outward pivoting of the tripping lever, and also through the centrifugal force, is radially displaceable and thereby releases the tripping lever.

  • Patent number: 4534296
Abstract: A track gauger includes a vertically movable gauger frame having a pair of fixed rail gauge bars extending between the rails upon a lowering of the frame. The gauger frame lies crosswise relative to the frame of a rail vehicle on which it is mounted, and outer edges of the bars are spaced apart in this crosswise direction a fixed distance for establishing a predetermined rail gauge distance. Pivotable rail gauge levers on the gauger frame engage the rails for gauging them at such predetermined distance upon engagement between the rails and the outer edges of the gauge bars. A track pre-gauger is mounted on the front end of the vehicle frame for pre-gauging the rails at such predetermined rail gauge distance.

  • Patent number: 4534298
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a frame adapted to be attached to a hopper car, a door plate slidably mounted on the frame, and an automatically engageable lock mounted on the frame adjacent the door plate and operable to hold the door plate closed when engaged. The lock includes pivotably mounted parts including a latch. One of the parts, which may be the latch, has a seal hole therein, and this seal hole is aligned with another seal hole in the frame when the lock is engaged. The seal holes are spaced from an adjacent edge of the frame a distance which is related to the size of the seal band such that there is little slack in the seal when the parts are coupled together. Further, the parts are shaped to require a substantial turning movement of the latch before the lock is disengaged, and the latch is unable to turn this distance because of the small amount of slack in the seal. Consequently the lock is prevented from accidentally disengaging when the seal is in place.

Abstract: In the combustion of waste mineral-bearing liquid streams, an improved type of construction for the combustion chamber, for the combustion of waste mineral-bearing liquid streams which permits continuous removal of solid particulate waste. An annular water channel is fitted inside of the outer shell of the combustion chamber at the bottom. The bottom of the chamber is closed off with a funnel-shaped, inverted conical floor, having a drain outlet at its center. An opening is provided in the side of the combustion chamber just above the bottom, for the exit of downflowing products of combustion. Water is supplied to the annular channel and flows through a longitudinal gap in the inner wall, to fall onto the funnel-shaped floor plate, to wash down all of the particulate matter that collects on the bottom plate, into the drain. Thus, the waste is removed as it is formed.
