Abstract: A method of densifying open-celled polyurethane foam is provided in which heated air at a temperature between about 425.degree. F. and 460.degree. F. is circulated through a mass of the foam so as to rapidly and uniformly raise the temperature of the mass to between about 365.degree. F. and 435.degree. F., the mass is then compressed to a desired thickness while its temperature is maintained between 365.degree. F. and 435.degree. F., and the mass is then immediately permitted to cool.
Abstract: In an electronic component manufacturing system, slices are transported in serial fashion between a plurality of work stations. As the slices move through the system, each work station performs a separate manufacturing operation on each slice. The manufacturing operations are performed in immediate succession and within the same time interval so that the slices are processed rapidly and so that slices do not accumulate between the work stations. The slices are maintained in sequence through the system so that the operation of the system is more easily controlled.

Abstract: A device for controlling an electromechanical transducer such as a proportional electromagnetic valve, in which a pulse signal having a constant period shorter sufficiently than the minimum response time required for the displacement of the plunger of the proportional electromagnetic valve over its predetermined full stroke is applied to the electromagnetic coil of the proportional electromagnetic valve to superpose a very small vibratory stroke component on the stroke of the plunger, and the duty cycle of the pulse signal applied to the electromagnetic coil is varied so as to urge the plunger in directly proportional relation to the variation of the duty cycle without substantially giving rise to mechanical hysteresis in the stroke of the plunger.
Abstract: A pocket structure is provided with a chamber to conceal a valuable object such as a billfold. The pocket has a front panel, a back panel and two intermediate panels. The front panel has a slit to form a pocket opening and a flap is provided to close the opening. Behind the first panel is a first intermediate panel which is secured inside the pocket to the lower seam and side seams by a row of stitching. The upper edge of the first intermediate panel extends above the slit behind the flap. The second intermediate panel is secured at its top edge to a support strip. The side edges and the bottom edge of the second intermediate panel are distal from the side edges and bottom edges of the front panel, rear panel and first intermediate panel. The space behind the rear panel and the second intermediate panel define a hidden chamber to conceal a valuable object such as a billfold.
Abstract: The protective helmet (FIG. 1) is provided in its lower part with a collar (C) formed advantageously by two segments (C.sub.1 and C.sub.2) movable with respect to each other slidably, in opposite directions along parallel horizontal guides (54-55) provided in an annular tapered crown (A.sub.1). Said shaped sectors terminate at their ends with two pairs of toothed racks (25-27 and 30-31), the elements of each pair being diametrically opposite with respect to their related actuating pinions (34-35) to achieve the simultaneous rectilinear movements in directions opposite to said segments to engage and disengage them with the jaw and head of the user. Segments (C.sub.1 and C.sub.2) are secured to body (A) of the helmet by guide elements (24,28,50) extending correspondingly and provided at their ends with blocking or stop means (60-64,51-65) which retain segments (C.sub.1 -C.sub.2) in their retracted positions.
Abstract: An artificial sphincter apparatus and method, the artificial sphincter including a pair of parallel, coaxially mounted rings with at least one ring rotatable relative to the other ring. A plurality of tie members mounted circumferentially to the rings extend between the rings and are angularly moved relative to the axis of the artificial sphincter upon relative rotation between the rings so as to selectively occlude or open a bowel engaged by the artificial sphincter. An actuator mechanism mounted on the artificial sphincter permits the artificial sphincter to be operated externally even when the artificial sphincter is implanted.
Abstract: A method of repair of patient tissues by implant including providing a living cell sample which is introduced into an implant member having a porous open structure. The cell sample may be cultured in the implant. The implant is secured to the patient, as by surgical implantation. In one embodiment, the implant portion which receives the cells preferably has a pore size of about 25 to 75 microns. In addition, a second pore size of about 100 to 400 microns for receipt of blood vessels and osteogenus cells through ingrowth after introduction into the patient, may be provided. The cell sample may advantageously be selected from the group consisting of cartilage cells, tendon cells, ligament cells and musculotendinous cells. The implant member may be advantageously used in bone or joint reconstruction surgery and in other forms such as artificial tooth implantation.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for stabilizing the spine wherein vertebral bodies have been removed which comprises forming recesses in the vertebral bodies which face one another, inserting a longitudinally extendable prosthetic device between the opposed vertebral bodies with the ends of the prosthetic device engaging the recesses, extending the prosthetic device to the desired predetermined distance.
Abstract: An add-on bidet includes a moulded plastic seat (12) which has a channel-shaped cross-section. A pivoting spray-arm (108) is stowed between the toilet-bowl rim and the inside of the channel. The inner wall (16) of the seat acts as a splash guard. The spray-arm is mounted in bearings (214,102) which are formed in the walls (16,18) of the seat. The seat is able to pivot, for raising, on a pair of stubby pivot pins (36,38) widely spaced apart. One (38) is hollow, to convey water to the seat. There are no exposed hose pipes or other obtrusive components. The water control knobs (70,71,76) are accessibly located. Water leaves the spray-head (116) as a coherent tube of water, which gives rise to a soft, gentle stream, whether the flow volume is large or small. This is achieved by deflecting jets of water from nozzles so that the jets coalesce back into a stream.
Abstract: Soap-impregnated washcloths are contained in a water-impervious dispenser adapted to be mounted on a showerbath room wall for bathers' convenience.
