  • Patent number: 4641602
Abstract: Apparatus and method for applying developer to an image carrier in a copying machine so that a regulated amount of developer is applied to the image carrier during image development but is inhibited from reaching the image carrier during nondevelopment. The developer is supplied to a developer carrier roller. The amount of developer on the developer carrier roller is regulated by a regulating roller which is mounted in a position opposing the developer carrier roller. The developer carrier roller then carries the developer to a developing position opposite the image carrier. An electric field, which is reversible, is applied between the developer carrier roller and the regulating roller. During image development, the electric field is applied so that the developer is attracted to the developer carrier roller. During nondevelopment, the electric field is reversed and the developer is attracted to the regulating roller, thus inhibiting developer from reaching the image carrier.

  • Patent number: 4641606
Abstract: A furnace having a fire box at one end of a multi-unit cell boiler receives combustible refuse and delivers hot combustion gases through passages between water cells of the multi-unit cell boiler. The combustion gases enter an exhaust stack at the far end of the boiler after giving up most of their contained heat to the water circulating through the cells. Simultaneously, water flows through the base of the boiler on a circuitous path from its end adjacent to the exhaust stack toward the furnace and through cooling walls of the furnace and then through a holding tank to a pump which delivers the water to a header communicating with the cells of the boiler unit most distant from the furnace. The water being pumped into the cells is preheated to boost the thermal efficiency of the boiler. Steam generated in the boiler enters a steam header connected with the cell boiler unit nearest the furnace.

  • Patent number: 4641637
Abstract: Apparatus for use by a person lying on a support surface to enable the person to apply spinal traction to him or herself, the apparatus comprises a generally U-shaped frame with parallel side rails and a somewhat elevated crossbar connecting the side rails, a flat, seat-forming carriage mounted for back and forth adjustment along the rails, a cord grip on the crossbar, a hip-encompassing belt for a user, and a cord for extending from the base of the belt through the cord grip. With this form of the apparatus, the user places the belt around the hips, sits on the carriage, and with the knees slightly flexed engages the cord in the cord grip under minimum tension. The user then lies back, grips the carriage and exerts pressure with the feet against footrests on the crossbar so as to straighten the legs and move the carriage back along the rails thereby increasing the cord tension and applying spinal traction to the lower back.

  • Patent number: 4641641
Abstract: A protective appliance for the hip joint area comprises an annular pad made of a relatively resilient material and carrying adhesive strips on one surface to secure the pad to the skin, and a relatively rigid dome-shaped shield carried in opposed pockets formed on the other, outer surface of the pad. When the appliance is in place, the shield serves to disperse forces directed toward the hip joint area, transferring such forces to surrounding regions which are inherently better protected by body tissue. The shield fits somewhat loosely in the pad pockets to permit it to adjust to changes in body position, thus adding to the comfort of the appliance when it is worn. The sides of the shield disposed between the pad pockets are contoured out of the plane of the pad to add further comfort particularly when the wearer reclines on the appliance.
