  • Patent number: 4685176
Abstract: A safety fastener for lugs includes two bolts pivotally mounted to a block in a cylindrical hollow body. The bolts can move between a lug-engaging latching disposition and a lug-releasing unlatching disposition, and are biased to the latching disposition by springs. A carrier disc is rotatable between a locking disposition and a release disposition to rotate a bolt-blocking member from a retracted disposition to a bolt-obstructing disposition. When the member is in its retracted disposition it allows the bolts to be displaced out of their latching disposition to accept the lugs. When the member is in its bolt-obstructing disposition it prevents this displacement of the bolts, and therefore prevents engagement of the lugs.A yoke is pivotable on the carrier from a rest disposition to a displacement disposition protruding from the carrier only when the carrier is in its release disposition.

  • Patent number: 4685179
Abstract: An air processing apparatus is disclosed having a feed roll pulling yarn from a source and feeding it to an air entangler at a feed rate. The yarn is entangled by a high pressure air stream in the air entangler, and a delivery roll pulls the yarn from the entangler at a delivery rate. The rolls are driven independently and independent controls are provided to independently vary the feed rate and the deliver rate to achieve a desired overfeed or underfeed of the yarn. A display shows the ratio of the feed rate to the delivery rate. A slub making apparatus feeds yarn to the entangler from a second source of yarn and includes a tensioner for tensioning the yarn as it is fed to the air entangler. An actuator selectively releases tension on the yarn from the second source so that it is rapidly overfed and the air entangler produces a slub in the entangled yarn.

  • Patent number: 4685186
Abstract: The simultaneous straightening and insertion of tubular sleeves into damaged heat exchanger tubes is accomplished by passing a pre-bent tubular sleeve through a bending apparatus utilizing three forming rolls. One of the forming rolls can selectively be moved toward the other two to compensate for varying radii of curvature. The apparatus is equipped with a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder capable of pulling the tubular sleeve through the bending apparatus in incremental steps. By simultaneously straightening and inserting pre-bent tubular sleeves into damaged heat exchanger tubes, the tubular sleeves can be inserted into damaged tubes which are in positions which would otherwise be impossible to be repaired by this method. This method effectively circumvents the proscription of straight tube insertions into damaged heat exchanger tubes from the quarter spherical chamber of the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4685191
Abstract: An apparatus and process for expanding a tube at selective points about its circumference to join another tube. After a segment of a first tube is inserted into a second tube having an end sleeve segment with a larger diameter and wall thickness than the first tube, compression and subsequent radial expansion of elastomeric bars lodged along the generally open sides of a bushing located within the first tube end segment cause the elastomeric bars to radially expand the wall of the first tube. The wall of the first tube expands at selective points against the wall of the second tube in proximity to their respective ends, creating a selective interference fit therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4685192
Abstract: Burrs on flame-cut semi-products are removed with the aid of a transversely guided flat chisel driven pulsatingly by a pneumatic percussion device, which reduces the advance forces required. The inclination of the flat chisel may be varied during operation against a continuously effective force to permit the chisel edge to follow any uneven areas, e.g. cambers, which may be present on the product surface bearing the burr, and to cause the chisel edge to always engage between the product surface and the burr. A variable speed drive is used for relative advance movement between the chisel and the product, so that the advance speed is increased when a portion of the burr splits off and gives way during chisel operation.

  • Patent number: 4685193
Abstract: Each of a pair of annular, especially non-circular, apertured flanges for vacuum joints are formed by machining an outer groove spaced in from the outer edge, an inner groove extending inward from the inner margin of the joint and an outward slanted side interconnecting the two grooves resulting in a sharp corner on the inner edge of the inner groove. A flange spacer, apertured to receive the bolts which draw the flanges together is positioned in the outer groove of both flanges. A soft metal (e.g., copper) gasket overlies the inner grooves. When the bolts are tightened, the gasket deforms outwardly under the pressure of the sharp corners to seal against both slanted surfaces to form an ultra-high vacuum joint which is "bakeable." For temporary testing of joints a portion of the gasket immediately overlying the corners may be replaced with an elastomeric ring.

  • Patent number: 4685196
Abstract: An MOS transistor with a trench channel and self-aligned source and drain contacts to the interconnection layer. The MOS transistor is fabricated by first etching the substrate of monocrystalline silicon so as to form a trench channel and thereafter filling the trench channel with an anisotropic etched first polycrystalline silicon film. Buried contacts of polycrystalline silicon to the substrate, and Al-Si metallization are used. The trench structure in the channel regions permits the self-alignment of the gate element and the buried contacts to source and drain regions. The MOS transistors of the invention significantly reduce the short channel effect as observed in conventional MOS transistors.

  • Patent number: 4685197
Abstract: The present invention provides a structure and method for fabricating that structure which provides increased capacitance over the prior art while occupying a minimum of surface area of the integrated circuit. The present invention accomplishes this by interleaving multiple capacitor plates to provide increased capacitance while occupying the same surface area as a prior art capacitor providing a fraction of the capacitance provided by the present invention. The present invention is fabricated by providing a capacitor stack which includes interleaved plates of material which may be selectively etched and which is separated by appropriate dielectric material. One portion of the stack is masked while one set of the interleave plates is etched. The etched portion of the interleave plates is filled by a suitable dielectric and a contact is made to the remaining plates. A different portion of the stack is then exposed to an etch which etches the other set of interleave plates.

  • Patent number: 4685198
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of isolating a transistor perfectly by employing a selective oxidation technology (LOCOS technology). More particularly, vertical openings are formed in the surface of {100} silicon substrate, and oxidation resistant films are formed of this surface and in part of the side walls of these openings. In succession, by etching with an etchant having an orientation anisotropy, dents are formed at high precision in the side walls of the openings. By oxidizing using the oxidation resistant film as the mask, an oxide film growing out from a dent in the opening side wall is connected with another oxide film growing out from an adjacent dent. The transistor thus formed in the active region of the silicon electrically isolated from the substrate is small in parasitic capacitance and may be formed into a small size, so that it possesses the features suited to VLSI, that is, high speed, low power consumption, and processability to high density integration.

  • Patent number: 4685200
Abstract: A technique for enclosing microelectronic circuit elements in hermetically sealed packages comprising a planar ceramic substrate with a box-like ceramic cover sealed thereto by a fused glass coating. The glass sealant is applied to the substrate in the form of a paste which thereafter is fired at high temperature and cooled to produce a smooth glass coating. With the cover in place on the substrate, the glass coating is remelted by heat developed by infra-red radiation developed by four line-focussed radiant heaters at the four sides of the package. The radiation of each heater is focussed at the interface line between the cover and the substrate. Because the radiant heat is concentrated along the interface line, unwanted heat transfer into the package is minimized, and the temperature is prevented from rising sufficiently to damage heat-sensitive elements.

Abstract: A cabinet maker's arch door or crown door marking gauge has side members attachable to a work table of a table saw or shaper. A spring band is held on the side members so that opposite sides of the band are perpendicular to the sides of a panel to be marked which is positioned between the side members. The band forms a symmetrical arch between the sde members which is marked on the panel. One side of the band is adjustably held by one side member so the length of the band between the side members, and thus the height of the arch between the side members can be varied. The side member are adjustably held on the support so the distance between the side members can be changed to permit marking panels of different widths.

  • Patent number: 4685218
Abstract: There is described a level sensing unit which is simple to operate, rugged in construction, sensitive to angular deviations of about 4 minutes 30 seconds, relatively inexpensive to construct, and very reliable. The unit is a sealed housing containing two communicating channels as fluid reservoirs opening into a compartment with an axle mounted between the channels and a float for each channel pivotally connected to the axle. Each float has an electrically conductive extension in electrical contact with the axle and directed toward a strip of similarly conductive material mounted within the housing. When the channels are filled with a nonconductive reactive fluid the extensions are in electrical contact with the strips when the floats are in a level condition, and the extensions become electrically disengaged through a buoyant force exerted on one float when the device is rotated so as to deviate from level.
