  • Patent number: 4730434
Abstract: A machine for applying a twist-type tie to the neck of a bag has a path and sets of endless belts which come together at a nip along the path to propel a bag neck which passes into the nip forwardly to a tying zone in the path. Here a twist-type ribbon crosses the path and is secured at its end in a holder. An endless chain carries a pusher tab up to the tying zone behind the bag neck, causing the bag neck to gather behind and deflect the ribbon, then pauses, and thereafter resumes its forward motion to drive the bag neck out of the machine. During the pause a bag clamp secures the bag neck against a surface that is along the path and a needle lifts a portion of the ribbon upwardly behind the gathered bag neck and brings that portion of the ribbon to the holder so that the ribbon loops below the bag neck in the form of leading and trailing segments. While the needle is so extended, a twister hook gathers its leading and trailing segments and twists them together.

  • Patent number: 4730435
Abstract: An apparatus for aseptically filling and sealing preformed bags includes a carousel table supporting a number of bags along its periphery, each bag having a nozzle initially sealed by a diaphragm. As the carousel table brings an individual bag under a sterile docking unit, that unit lowers over the bag and showers the nozzle and diaphragm with HEPA filtered air to remove particulate matter and bioburden. A flash heat sterilizer sterilizes the diaphragm and the top of the nozzle and at least partially melts the diaphragm. A heat sterilized fill pipe descends, piercing the diaphragm and filling the bag. When filling is completed, the fill pipe partially withdraws, the lower portion of the pipe remaining inserted in the nozzle. A heat sealer then seals the nozzle below the tip of the pipe. The pipe completely withdraws, the sterile docking unit moves clear of the bag, and the carousel table rotates, thus moving an empty bag into position for filling.

  • Patent number: 4730438
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for arranging paper rolls coming, e.g. from a winder into a package suitable for delivery. The rolls are identified, end-labelled, and their width, weight and diameter are measured, whereupon a package is formed of a suitable number of rolls at a wrapping station. According to the invention, the rolls are transferred, each in its turn, to a positioning station, where they are identified and end-labelled one by one, whereupon the identification data and measurement data of each roll as well as of a preceding roll, if any, placed in the waiting position of the positioning station, are compared with the specification data of the package to be delivered. When said data of the rolls correspond to the specification data of the package, the rolls are transferred to the wrapping station, whereas, in the contrary case, the rolls are shifted to the waiting position of the positioning station. Thus, this acts as a sort of a buffer store for paper rolls.

  • Patent number: 4730444
Abstract: A high speed blower feeds airstreams to a plurality of lower ducts that produce sheets of high velocity lower air stream moving upward through various gaps in a rake plate through which tines of a rotary pickup drum pass as the drum lifts a windrow of dry, brittle sesame seed crop, creating a lower "air seal" that prevents loss of large numbers of sesame seeds that pop out of the dry pods as a result of snapping and cracking of the dry crop material. The air seal prevents the seeds from falling through the gaps to the ground. The blower also feeds a plurality of upper ducts that produce a high velocity air stream flowing rearward over the upper surface of the matt, intercepting large numbers of sesame seeds that pop outward and upward from the pods and otherwise would be lost as a result of the snapping and cracking of the dry crop material.

  • Patent number: 4730446
Abstract: A baler has winding elements for forming a bale of crop. A formed bale is bound with binding material such as twine or wire from a binding mechanism. When a bale is fully formed, a cable is pulled by the operator of the tractor towing the baler which actuates the binding mechanism and simultaneously operates a change-speed gear to increase the speed of the winding elements. The bale thus rotates faster during binding than it does while it is being formed. This reduces time required for binding. When the bale has been bound, it is discharged through a door which pivots upwards for this purpose. Pivoting of the door pulls a further cable which returns the change-speed gear to the lower speed position and actuates the binding mechanism so that the next bale can be formed. The bale chamber is substantially cylindrical with rotable elements around the interior of its curved sides.

Abstract: A hot or cold leveler is provided having conventional high loaded driven work rolls backed up longitudinally across their face by a plurality of short backing rolls. A series of lower work and backing rolls are cassette mounted on the lower main frame of the leveler. The upper backing rolls are mounted on an intermediate support frame designed for limited flexure and which in turn is supported across its length by a plurality of hydraulic piston-cylinder assemblies fixed in the top main frame of the leveler for contouring of the leveling action. Each cylinder is controlled by a servo valve which can be operator-adjusted to work the sheet material across its width dependent on sheet flatness. Buckling at the center, quarter, or edges of the sheet can be removed by a corrective positioning of the piston-cylinder in the location of the buckle. Entry and delivery rollers are similarly servo-controlled. The entry roll is backed off to permit the sheet product to enter the machine and it acts as an anvil roll.

  • Patent number: 4730475
Abstract: A metal workpiece such as a slab is rolled into a desired width without requiring broadsiding. The system generally involves reducing a first portion along the width of the workpiece to a first thickness while creating a second portion along the width of the workpiece having a thickness greater than the first portion thickness and having a predetermined mass. Subsequently the second portion is reduced to establish a predetermined increase in the width of the workpiece and a decrease in the thickness of the workpiece to obtain a substantially uniform thickness along substantially the entire width of the workpiece. A preferred approach includes providing a pair of cooperating work rolls at least one of which has a generally cylindrical portion and at least one adjacent tapered portion. Initial reduction is effected by employing a pair of cooperating cylindrical central portions and at least one tapered portion. This provides a workpiece with a reduced portion and an enlarged portion.
