  • Patent number: 4730483
Abstract: Apparatus and method for determining the fracture resistance of thin wall hollow articles when ironed, the method including the step of providing a drawing die and punch or a mandrel having a portion thereof tapered in a continuous, linear manner. The taper is such that it provides a continuous decrease in punch-to-die clearance when the two are moved together, and thus a continuous range of ironing reductions along the side wall of an article located between the punch and die. The taper of the punch begins adjacent the forward end thereof and is sized to effect conventional thinning of the side wall of the article at the onset of ironing. The final diameter of the taper of the punch, however, is such that fracturing of the side wall is assured in the ironing process.

  • Patent number: 4730492
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus and methods for producing electrical signals that can be used to measure the speed of ultrasound in a moving web of paper. The apparatus employs a hollow cylinder in which a plurality of transducers are positioned to contact the web. Power supplied to the cylinder through mercury slip is filtered by power conditioning circuitry in the interior of the cylinder, thus enabling the delivery of clean electrical pulses to the emitting transducers. Signals from the receiving transducers are delivered to voltage-to-frequency converter circuitry in the interior of the cylinder, and the resulting electrical frequency signals are converted to optical frequency signals. The optical signals are then communicated across an air gap to receptors which are external to the cylinder. Thus, signals from which measurements of the speed of ultrasound can be derived are provided substantially free from noise generated by transmission through slip rings.

  • Patent number: 4730496
Abstract: A capacitive pressure sensor that is fabricated by a batch process affords isolation for the sensing element and leads from the pressure media and provides stress isolation as well. The pressure sensor is made up of a sandwich construction including a silicon wafer which is etched from one side to make cavities in a plurality of desired locations to form deflecting diaphragms, one surface of which acts as a capacitor plate. A glass layer is metalized on both sides and has holes drilled in locations that align with the diaphragms formed on the silicon wafer. The glass layer is anodically bonded to the wafer to form capacitance gap of a few microns relative to the one surface of each diaphragm. The assembly of the metalized glass layer and the silicon wafer is in a preferred form sandwiched between two additional layers, and bonded together in a vacuum atmosphere. The four layer sandwich is then cut up into individual sensors.

  • Patent number: 4730497
Abstract: The measuring-value sensor according to the present invention for the measurement of extensions, for example in concrete or shotcrete, consists of a support member, having an extension stiffness value that is lower than the extension stiffness value of the material diameter displaced by the sensor. Transverse elements are located at either end of the support member, which induce the impact. By combining sufficiently large transverse elements that have a relatively high flexural strength and a support member that has the above-mentioned very low extension stiffness value it is made sure that extensions in the concrete are forced completely and without obstruction upon the support member by means of the transverse elements, so that when measuring the extension of the support member, the extension of the concrete is measured directly and without any distortion. The support member is suitably a hollow profile of aluminum or a plastic material, into which an additional profile, e.g.

  • Patent number: 4730509
Abstract: A control lever for motorcycle handlebars and the like has a dislocating pivot. A cable connected to the lever transmits a controlling force to a brake, clutch, or other machine. The pivot is a two-pronged fork element and a central element pivotally connected at a pair of joints, one joint for each prong of the fork element. A joint is a cylindrical rod with a hemispherical or other shaped end, and a socket with a cavity shape suitable to the rod end. A spring pushes a rod into engagement within a socket. A lip partially around the opening of the cavity defines the range of allowable twisting motion of the lever arm. When the lever is forced out of the direction of its normal motion, the pivot elements dislocate, preventing damage to the lever. The force required for dislocation depends on the spring bias against the rod, the shape of rod end, and the depth of the socket cavity.

The rotation of the axle of the drive pulley by the crank shaft is transmitted to the grooved body of the drive pulley by a planetary cone-type reduction gear. An output ring of the reduction gear can be moved along the surface of the planetary cones of the reduction gear by an hydraulic ram to change the reduction ratio. A pump driven by the rotation of the drive pulley pumps transmission oil sealed within the housing of the pulley to drive the hydraulic ram. The oil pressure applied to the ram is determined by the opening and closing of a solenoid valve, which is controlled by a controller in accordance with the operating conditions of the engine and the auxiliary equipment driven by the drive pulley. The reduction gear, the pump, the hydraulic ram, and the solenoid valve are housed within the drive pulley which is the same size as a conventional drive pulley.

  • Patent number: 4730519
Abstract: The automatic transmission has clutches and brakes to change the gear ratio. The clutches and brakes are independently actuated by hydraulic servos. A hydraulic circuit supplies oil to and from the servos to either actuate or release them. Within the hydraulic circuit are solenoids which respond to an electronic control. The electronic control regulates the pressure in the hydraulic servos by supplying signals to the solenoids. By providing a predetermined time delay in the sending of a signal to the on-coming servo during a gear shift, a smoother shift can be achieved. The shift is further improved by varying the time delay by a predetermined value based on the previous condition of the off-going servo.
