  • Patent number: 4756068
Abstract: A shearbar attachment and adjustment apparatus is adapted to apply clamping forces to a shearbar in a forage harvester at first locations on opposite ends of the shearbar. The clamping forces prevent the shearbar from backing away from a rotary cutterhead in the forage harvester during chopping of crop material by passing cutting edges of knives on the periphery of the cutterhead close to the cutting edge of the shearbar. Also, the apparatus is adjustable to apply pulling forces on the shearbar at second locations on its opposite ends which are offset inwardly from the first locations. Application of pulling forces at these inward locations relative to the outward locations of the clamping forces tends to compensate for the effect of the convex shape of the shearbar cutting edge by causing bowing of the shearbar at the second locations to provide a more uniform clearance between the cutting edge of the shearbar and the cutting edges of the cutterhead knives.

  • Patent number: 4756088
Abstract: An instrument for monitoring the direction of a borehole comprises an elongate casing having its longitudinal axis coincident, in use, with the axis of the borehole, an outer gimbal pivotally mounted within the casing with its pivot axis coincident with the longitudinal axis of the casing, a gyroscope unit mounted in the outer gimbal, a torque motor and a gravity sensor unit. At the beginning of a run the instrument is positioned at the mouth of the borehole. The rate of rotation about an axis transverse to the outer gimbal axis is then sensed by the gyroscope unit, and the outer gimbal is slewed by the torque motor in dependence on the sensed rate so as to align the transverse axis along an East/West direction. The instrument is then moved along the borehole and the rate of rotation about the outer gimbal axis is continually sensed by the gyroscope unit, the outer gimbal being torqued by the motor in dependence on the sensed rate to stabilize the outer gimbal about its axis.

  • Patent number: 4756092
Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing water from sludge waste material is provided. A layer of sludge is disposed upon an endless screen belt which is in turn dragged across a heated plate such that water in the sludge is evaporated and escapes from the sludge as steam. The endless screen is formed by a chain link belt which provides a plurality of discrete containers for small volumes of the sludge. The sludge may also be preheated just prior to drying by the injection of hot air columns into the sludge, such that the sludge is heated and agitated. The steam escaping from the drying sludge is directed into a heat exchanger which in turn heats the preheating air. Waste gases from a heating station are returned to the burner at the heating station to oxidize foul smelling chemicals and then reduce the odors generated by a sludge drying operation.

  • Patent number: 4756095
Abstract: There is disclosed a resilient spring and lever support for an inner sole of a shoe which can be used in combination with a new foot warmer mechanism, or can be used as an orthopedic foot support. The preferred embodiment is a foot warmer mechanism which has a pair of sole plates in rubbing frictional contact with the upper sole plate pivotally secured at the toe of the shoe and the lower sole plate supported by a lever arm located near the heel of the shoe. A resilient spring is provided at the heel of the shoe to bias the pair of plates upwardly, and one or more springs can also be provided at intermediate positions. The pair of plates is moved down and up by the applied weight of the wearer and the countering bias of the spring. As the sole plates are moved, they slide against each other, generating heat by friction, to warm the weater's foot. The mechanism can be constructed in the shoe or can be a separate assembly that can be inserted into a shoe.

  • Patent number: 4756097
Abstract: An adjustable ladies shoe heel protector which has a body (20) of thermoplastic material in the shape of the heel portion of a shoe. Adjustment is provided by an overlapping joint (32) having pressure sensitive adhesive (34) that is formed and joined to match the exact configuration of a specific shoe. The height of a given heel is mated by trimming the heel portion to the appropriate length using performations (40) as a guide. An integral annealed metal tab (36) is bent over the counter of the shoe holding the protector in place while the user is driving a motor vehicle, thereby preventing scuffing of the shoe. The adjustment in size and convenience of attachment overcomes the problem heretofore encountered with heel protectors.
